Ep. 3: The Generator Energy Type
If you’re a Generator, this episode is your starting point.
Generators have powerful, sustainable energy but that energy works best when it’s being used on the right things. In this episode, we’ll talk about what makes someone a Generator, how their energy works, what it means to respond instead of initiate, and how satisfaction and frustration can help you know when you’re on or off track.
We’ll also talk about Sacral vs. Emotional Generators, why open-ended questions can feel so frustrating, where Generators tend to overcommit or get stuck, and how to start getting back in touch with your own Sacral response.
In this episode:
- What makes a Generator a Generator
- The Generator aura and why it’s naturally magnetic
- How Generator energy works
- Sacral vs. Emotional Generators
- What it means to “wait to respond”
- Why satisfaction is the Generator’s green light
- Why frustration is a useful warning sign
- Common places Generators get stuck
- How to support the Generators in your life
- Why doing what lights you up matters
- A few simple ways to experiment with Generator energy in real life
- The Sacral Field Trip — a fun way to practice following your gut response
And if some of this sounds suspiciously like your partner, child, or best friend, grab their chart too. Human Design gets even more interesting when you start seeing how differently the people around you are wired.

Sandy: Welcome to Human Design Field Notes. This is where we learn human design in a way that's simple, fun, and actually useful in real life. The kind of thing you can try for yourself, talk about with your girlfriends, and before long, you'll want to know everyone's chart. And I'm not just teaching it, I'm testing it too. I'm rebuilding my coaching business using my own human design and I'll be sharing the field notes as I go. The experiments, the insights, the wins, the mistakes, and probably a few things we can all have a good laugh about. Because human design isn't meant to be stared at on a chart. It's meant to be lived. I'm your host, Sandy Connery. Let's see where this takes us. Alright, welcome to episode three. This is where we're gonna start to get into the nitty-gritty parts of human design. We're gonna go through all five different energy types, and today we are starting with generators. So, energy type is probably the most fundamental part of human design, and it's usually the first thing that you learn about when you are exposed to human design. So, for those of you who have heard of it, have like dug into it a little bit, you more than likely will know your energy type. Your energy type tells you how your energy is designed and interacts with the rest of the world. And this allows you to know how to best use all your energy in relationships, at work, with parents, with friendships, with mother in laws. And it's so important to know because once you understand what type of energy you have and how to work with that, you can avoid burnout. You can understand what's happening to yourself. And you are able to align with natural rhythms in your day, in your month, in in your months, in your years. And it's truly just living with a lot more ease because you understand how you are designed, quite literally. And also I think the other really important side of knowing energy what energy type you are is like you can recognize when you're kind of going off course when you're now living out of alignment and how to bring yourself back or how to know when you're getting back on track. So I think that even if you just understand what kind of energy type you are, this can be life-changing. So there are five different energy types generators, which we're talking about today, manifestors, manifesting generators. projectors and reflectors. And we're gonna go through all the things about generators today and the next the following episodes will cover cover each of those other energy types. So y first thing you need to know is are you a generator? So you need to simply get your own chart and you can do that at sandyconnery.com. click on the free HD chart and type in your birth information. Your chart will come up and you can download it and that's what I recommend that you do so that you can follow along with these episodes and to know if you're a generator or not, it will state in the right hand column, it will say energy type or type, and it will say generator or one of the others I just mentioned. Okay, so in the population, generators, I am a generator. There's a lot of us. We are about 35 to 38% of the population. And what makes a generator a generator is they have a defined sacral energy center. So if you look at your chart, it's the second square from the bottom and it will be colored in, meaning that it is defined. And if you want to understand what I just said a little bit better, you can go back and listen to episode two where I talk about how to interpret all the things on these very confusing human design charts. So Having a defined or colored in sacral energy center means that us generators, we have consistent access to energy. Some people call it like a regenerative inner life force, which is really quite cool. I have one of my teachers who's not a generator. She was teaching this and she said she's so jealous of the generators in her life because she's doesn't have this kind of energy and she watches the generators in her life just go, go, go, go, like just taking on so many things and doing, you know, working so hard on projects and like right to completion, and they just like are more energized at the end. And she's like, if I could change anything about my chart, I just would love to have a defined sacral center so that I can tap into that some of that energy. So I think that's kind of cool. An aura of an a generator is very Big, it is embracing, it is open, it is magnite, magnetic, it is like inviting, it is powerful. It's like we can bring the world to us. We never need to worry about missing out on life because we're called with this giant inviting aura, we're calling it in all the time. We don't have to force opportunities, we just need to engage with life and respond to what comes to us. So Qualities of a generator, and as I list some of these, you might recognize this, some of these qualities in people you know, family or friends. So, generators, they quite literally create and lift up the world with their energy. They are magnetic, they are full of vitality, they are full of resilience, they are the builders and the doers of the world. Generators have tremendous sustainable energy, which is what my teacher was so jealous about. But that energy works best. That energy is accessible when they're engaged with things that they genuinely genuine wow genuinely love. They thrive when they focus on things that they love to do, working on things that drain their energy, things that they're not really loving. Can really lead to frustration and to burnout. And just side note, I used to do a lot of business coaching with women, and burnout was always a topic, like the fear of it happening or that they were in it. And now that I've learned human design, and this is, you know, part of why I'm so excited about it, is that I can look back at some past coaching clients and think. they were burning out because they were probably a generator and they were working on things that they hated, you know, especially around marketing and social media or getting on camera or like writing a blog post every single week to be consistent. That if that doesn't light you up, you are going to burn out. You are just losing energy by doing things that you don't love. All right. The other really, I think, cool thing about generators is the way that their intuition works. Because they have a defined sacral energy center, they have really strong, quick initial gut feelings about things. There are two different types of intuition for generators. One is designed to solely make decisions or solely base their intuition on this instant access to gut feeling. So it's like low in the belly, it is instant, it is quick, it is a hell yes, or it is a hell no. Well, the other type of intuition for generators are called emotional generators. The kind I just described are called sacral or pure generators, who just their decisions are based on that initial gut reaction. The other type is an emotional generator. So they will get this initial gut reaction because their sacrum is defined. but the they need a little bit more time. Their actual decisions in life should be based on the emotions that they feel. So they're gonna have an initial quick gut reaction, a sacral hit as I like to call it, about a decision. And then they need to just take some time, like 24 hours, and just ride some of these emotional waves and make sure that that initial gut reaction is correct. Often it is, but it's better to make just not decide quickly in the moment. Take that information from that sacral hit, sit with it, feel through it, and then make the decision. So all generators have this immediate hell yes, hell no reaction. Pure generators can use that quick, fast hit to make decisions. They're gonna know immediately if something is right for them or not, while emotional generators need a little bit more time to ride that emotional wave and then decide. And one point I want to make about this specifically for those pure. sacral generators that get that initial hit and that's what they should you know base their intuition on is that it is a hell yes a hundred percent hell yes or it's a no if it feels like I'm not sure maybe like kind of want to do that or that maybe I should take that on that's a no right if it's if it's anything but a hell yes let's do this it's a no and it doesn't mean it's a no forever it just means like right now don't do it. Don't say yes, don't say no, whatever, whatever the situation may be. I'm gonna do a lot more episodes on this topic on intuition. In Human Design Speak, it's called authority or inner authority. So if you're looking at your chart, for those of you who are generators, you want to know which kind you are, it will list it on the side. It will say. say inner authority or authority and it will say sacral or it will say emotional. Alright, now the other thing that you need to know as a generator is what your strategy is. Each of the energy types have a strategy, and the strategy is how you navigate life with this type of energy and how to best use your energy to bring in aligned opportunities. And that phrase to bring in aligned opportunities is from my teacher, Leah McLeod, and I just love that because who doesn't want that? Can you imagine? Being able to have so much energy all the time, be really lit up about what you're doing, and know that the way that you're living, you're making decisions quickly, you're making decis using your intuition on decisions, and then you are also calling in all these beautiful opportunities. I just think that is amazing. So a generator, and again, every energy type has a different strategy to res to to how they should navigate life. these things in a generator strategy is to respond. So it they're responding to what comes into their life. They've got this big aura, they're calling things in, things are attracted, they're magnetic, and they simply get to sit back and respond to whatever is happening around them. That's where their power comes from, right? Generators are designed to wait. And trust that life will come to them because it will. If you are truly living your human design, life will come to you. Now, when I say wait and trust that life will come to you, it does not mean that you're sitting around doing nothing. All of us should, you know, stay present, stay aware, and interact with life that's happening around you. So go, go live, go live your life. Read things, listen to things, have conversations with people, try things. Life is always giving you things to respond to. So you are at your best when you are open to these opportunities, when you're sort of witnessing things and following that sacral hit of like, yes, this is where you should go after. And I'll give you an example of this. So I am a sacral generator and As I mentioned in episode one, I was like did not know what to do. I was no longer working for Marvelous, the company that I co-founded. I didn't really have a plan and I didn't know what to do. I discovered human design out of a conversation with a girlfriend. And the more I read about it, the more I learned about it, I was just vibrating with excitement. So I responded. To a conversation. She just took she just made a comment to me, like, do you know anything about human design? I didn't. And I responded to that conversation by looking into it. She came into my orbit. Her comments came into my orbit. I responded to it by researching it. And my gut, like within I think 24 hours, I was like, Hell yes, this is what is my God, what is this? This is the missing piece. And I knew that I this is where I was gonna go. This is what I was gonna do. And the same thing with this podcast, I was listening to a different podcast, and I was like, I really like how this is set up. And I thought, my God, I'm gonna make my own. So again, I was listening to something, and I responded to that by saying, but I got the idea for creating my own podcast. And again, it was like a hell. Yes, like it makes no sense on paper to do this because there's a million human design podcasts. but and I sometimes get trapped in my head, like what am I doing? No one's gonna listen to this and like who am I to do this? And like there's a million human, there's so much information, blah blah blah. And then I when I hear myself, my mind going, I just sit and get quiet and I just check in with my sacrum energy center, like, should I be doing this? And it's always been a hell yes. The moment that it's a no, I will stop doing this podcast. I'm not gonna force it. Maybe it's 10 episodes, maybe it's 200 or a thousand episodes. I don't know. I don't care right now. Right now, in the immediate, this is what my intuition is saying. Go, go do this, follow this path. So that's an example of responding to life and using your intuition to make decisions. Now What does alignment feel like when you are a generator? So in human design, they call it I don't like these words, but they call it a signature theme when you are in alignment. And when you are out of alignment, you are you have a not self-theme. I don't really understand what that even means. So we're gonna just call it in alignment out of alignment. So for generators, if you are on track living the design that you're supposed to, living the life that you're supposed to. You're gonna feel satisfied. So the the alignment sort of like green light is satisfaction, the feeling of satisfaction. If you are living and you're happy and it you're working on things that really light you up, you're feeling super satisfied satisfied with and your body is kind of like confirming that satisfaction, that emotion. Your body is confirming with you that this is what you are meant to be doing. You are feeling like deeply fulfilled. That is the green light. Yes, keep going, keep going, keep going. And that's what I feel so deeply with this new body of work and with this podcast. However, when you are out of alignment, the the emotion that you're going to feel as a generator is frustration. And I can tell you, I have spent a lot of my recent years in that frustr in that sense of frustration. So it's telling you like something's off. Something's not quite right. You maybe pushed from the mind too much. You tried to initiate and start things. You chose work that didn't light you up because maybe someone told you that you should. You were really like forcing things. Frustration is like your red light. It's your or your warning light. Like, hey, check in with with things like how are you feeling? What are you working on that is not lighting up? They're like satisfaction and frustration are navigation tools. So notice when these emotions come up. And again, each energy center, sorry, each energy type has their own like these in alignment, out of alignment emotions, and we'll be going through those in the next couple episodes. So for frustration. I often now will even just look back at my day and like where did I feel frustrated? And that is been really helpful to recognize where I should or shouldn't go. So one of the things with this podcast is like, should I put it on YouTube? You know, I initially was just gonna do audio and and podcast only and and then I was like, but I'm sitting here, like I might as well record it. And I should do it. Like it's a big giant search sent engine, blah, blah, blah, all the things we've taught in the in our in my past life. And so I started to record video and everything I just I was just frustrated. I just like, I don't wanna do this. And so this is an example of I fell into the trap of like using my mind and like I should do it this way. This is the best course of action for this business to grow. And I'm like, but I don't really want do it. I don't want to do it that way. So I'm not. I'm just at this point doing audio. That may change. I may check in, like, should I put these videos on YouTube? And I might get a hell yes, and then I'm gonna do it. But right now I am not doing anything that my sacral says I should or I shouldn't. I'm not, I'm only doing things that are a hell yes. And right now, audio only is a hell yes. And there's lots of arguments of why I should put it onto YouTube, but I'm not going to. It is not meant to be at this point. Okay. And I wanna talk a little bit for all you generators who are listening, where you might get struck and struggle in life. The first point is generators, we struggle with open-ended questions. You are designed to get the information from the outside world and respond to it. And All these things happening in the outside world, we respond and decide how it's making us feel. But when someone says, gives us an open-ended question, like, what do you want to eat tonight? Which is like the question I hate the most in life. Like it's always like, I don't know. It completely frustrates me. I just, see, frustration. I I hate that question. I don't know. I don't know. Like there's too many choice. There's nothing to respond to when you say, What do you want to eat tonight? So it's much better to say, do you want to have spaghetti and meatballs or do you want, you know, sushi? I will have an answer to one of those, but if you say, you know, what do you want to eat? I I just shut down. So open-ended questions are horrible for generators. We talk I want to be talked to in yes no questions. or multiple choice questions. That's so much easier for me to respond to. Throughout school, I hated sociology or English or any of those like humanity type courses where there was open-ended questions. my God, I don't know. Like I just had nothing to bite into to answer. I really, really struggled with those. Okay, second place where generators might get stuck is they may say yes to everything. And it's very easy to prioritize other people's happiness over yours because we all have so much energy. and so we can say yes, yes, I'll do that, yeah, I'll do that, yes, I'll do that. But saying yes to things just because you have energy is not the right way to go about it, of course. This depletes your energy. So if you're you've got lots of energy, but if you're working on things that don't really excite you, you are going to become drained and exhausted. There is no prize for you generators for doing things that you dislike. Your energy wasn't meant to be poured into things that drain you. That's not how you were that's not why you are on this earth. Therefore, I just like think about anytime anyone asks you to do something, know your limits, right? You don't need to do everything. That's gotta be your mantra. You get to decide what where your energy focuses on, and it's okay to say no. The third thing that people get stuck on, and I feel like I'm still really learning this, is not being in touch with your sacral response. That is your guide, that is your wisdom, that's your intuition, that instant hell yes, hell no feeling. Decide what you should do or not do based on your sacral, not what's expected of you. Not what everyone says. And this is especially true for business because there's a lot of wisdom out there and like here's how and here's my strategy and here's the 10 steps and so on. But if that doesn't light you up, then you should not follow that. And there's lots of marketing that's out there that's that's like you should do this, and it's like, but I don't want to, right? But you're kind of conditioned to believe that you're not gonna have success unless you follow it by how the experts say. Right. That person had success. So I should do it for my business and I'll have the same, the same result. But we know that's not true. We know I saw that over and over and over again. And I ex we experienced in my old company that we would follow someone else's strategy and it didn't really work, you know? And it's like we shouldn't have done it. We shouldn't have just checked in with our sacral responses and said no. so I think this is a really interesting exercise for all you generators is to like get quiet. And check in with that s that that sacral response that yes, no. It is immediate. It is feel felt in the body. It is low, like low stomach area, below the belly button in the sacral region. The fourth thing is you might feel really stuck in a job or a task or a project or some kind of commitment and you're staying in it. It maybe lit you up in the beginning, but it doesn't now. And you're staying there for the wrong reason. So it might be that you're just like making everybody happy. They know that they love you, they love having you. You might be fearful of change, of course. it might be out of loyalty, like you promise someone you're gonna stay for five years and you don't really wanna be there anymore, but you are gonna be loyal to that company or to that person or whatever it may be, and you just don't know how to pivot or change. so I would just take stock of if that's true and like ask your sacral what you really want to be doing. The next one is. where people kind of struggle as generators are they expect everyone else to have as much energy as they do. And this is so, so true because you're just like vibrating and operating at a frequency that a l a lot of other, you know, almost 70% of the rest of the population are not. And you might think other people are kind of like slow or lazy or what's wrong with them. And once we go through all the other energy types, you'll understand How their energy works so differently from a generator. And I really see this in relationships. And we have some friends who are both like husband and wife are both generators. And they have a child who is not a generator. And he's just kind of, you know, marching to his own, his own pace. And the father in that family is kind, I can, he's not said it out loud like, why is this kid so lazy? But Just in comments, you can see that there is a judgment around like he's not a very hard worker and you know, what's wrong with him? He should be working hard. And a part of that is conditioned, you know, like we're believed that our value comes from working. and so generators that, you know, that works very well with the our energy type, but it doesn't for the others. And it doesn't mean that they're lazy. They are just wired truly, wired differently. So let's talk about generators in relationships. So maybe you're not a generator, but you have a few in your life. And just because there's so many generators, that's statistically probably very likely. So here's how to support generators in your life. Again, open ended questions, don't do that. Give them options. Give them multiple choice, give them yes, no. you may notice, you can even test this out by asking an open ended question versus asking them a you know, yes, no, multiple choice and see how they respond. They may get really excited about your ideas. If you've got a like a new idea for something, a new project or a trip plan or whatever, they might really get excited about your ideas and they want might want to get involved. I am frequently called an enabler. So if people really want to get like their new idea off the ground, they'll come to me, be like, hey, what do you think? And I can get really excited for them. and they sort of feed off that energy, which is a really beautiful part of of being a generator, I think. when a generator, my god, this is so true. When a generator gets a new idea or you know, finds something that really lights them up, they want you to be as excited. as they are about this new thing. So when I found human design, I'm like, ha ha. I was telling everyone and they're like, my God, Sandy, can you like just can you stop? And I just don't understand why people aren't as excited as I are, as I am. your generators in your life, they will seem to have they'll seem to have endless energy. They they don't, but it's like they're gonna probably gonna have more energy than you. And I just want to say that you do not need to match that. You are not lazy if you do not keep up with generators in your life. They are operating at a different frequency than you. So let's talk about generators in the field. If you are a generator, here's some advice, some tips that you can do in your life to start to really embrace this energy type. So the first tip is do something in the morning that really energizes you. Do something that really lights you up. So often, especially in in business, we're told, you know. Do the hard things first or like do that bookkeep bookkeeping task, assuming you don't like bookkeeping, do that bookkeeping task first, get it off your list, and then you can spend the rest of the day on things that you enjoy. And actually for generators, it's the opposite. So I now make sure that the first thing I do in the morning is something that really lights me up and that gives me energy so that I'm creating energy because I'm working on something I love. So I can take that energy and move it into the bookkeeping tasks that maybe I don't love as much. So it doesn't have to be work. Maybe it's a walk, maybe it's sitting in the garden with your coffee, whatever it is, like just recognize that the smartest play for you is do something that's really like you love first thing in the morning. and then the next thing is your sleep. So generators need to burn off energy from the day. So they create all this energy throughout the day and they need to actively f burn it off. They should be exhausted by night. They should not start something at ten o'clock at night, something exciting that they're they're love, because they'll never get to bed. They'll just be up working on it. And I know that is true for myself. I have to just like stop working. Because I'll just go. I'll just go and go and go. If I'm excited about something, I'll just keep working on it. And so and I'll never get to be able to sleep. So generators, and especially if you have kids that are generators, make sure they physically burn off that excess energy before going to bed. And then my generator friends, I would ask you to take inventory. Where are you spending energy? because you really want to spend energy working on something. versus that you think you should. And again, I gave that business example of like a lot of people I think are doing marketing techniques because they should do this or they should be on Instagram or they should have TikTok or whatever it may be. But like just take an inventory of where are you doing things that really don't light you up. And then like what can you get rid of? What can you minimize? What can you reprioritize? What can you change? And part of this podcast is like really showing you how I'm gonna build this new era of my coaching business by following this this principle. I should be on YouTube, but I'm not. I just ugh I know. So I'm not gonna do it, even though I should. And in past Sandy would have been like the smart move is to use YouTube as a search engine and da da da. No, I don't want to, I have no. Nothing about that makes me excited. So I'm not gonna do it, even though it's kind of like the the bad advice or the wrong advice. So take a look at your own life and where are you really feeling frustrated? Where are you just like not enjoying something and what can you do about it? The next thing is I encourage all of my generators out there to be selfish, to be selfish, to do things that you love. There's so much conditioning around this, but it's actually one of the most selfless things that you could do is to do things that you love because the energy, the energy that you create by working on things that you are excited about will lift up the energy of any everyone around you. Right. So that is like it's very Selfish, but it's also selfless, which is kind of beautiful. So think about it that way that a lot of people, pleasers, can get trapped in this and like be selfish. The more you do things, the more that you love, the more that your friends and your family, your partner will be like, wow, you know, you like this is kind of fun to be on this ride with you. And then the last thing I would suggest for generators is to have what I'm calling a sacral field trip. Take an afternoon or an entire day if you can do that, and just do what you want. Follow that gut response, follow that sacrum. Give yourself an a couple of hours at least with no plan. I did this I recently had a birthday. It was on a Friday and my family was all at work. And so I decided to try this out. Like this was an attempt for me to get back in touch with my sacral response. So I just kept asking myself yes, no, or multiple choice questions like, Do you wanna wear jeans or do you wanna wear linen pants? I'm gonna wear jeans. Do you want your hair up? Do you want your hair? I want my hair up. I actually for my birthday I did something called dragon braids. I loved it. It was so fun. and it like lit me up. I was so excited to try this new braiding technique. Plus, the name is kind of cool. and then I'm like, let's go for lunch. And you know, do you want to go here or do you want to go here? I never asked myself, where do I want to go? Because again, that just shuts me down. Like, I don't know is always the first response. So I went to had a beautiful lunch. I scanned the menu. I made a very quick sacral decision on what I was going to eat. It was delicious. I walked outside. I saw a store that I haven't been in for a super long time. I'm like, I'm gonna go in there. And I like spent time just looking at everything. They have jewelry, they have housewares that's all imported, and plus local artists. I bought a bracelet, a very quick decision. I love it, And it was just the most beautiful day. And I had no plan. And I just literally, what's next? And I just kept getting these sort of sacral hits. Yes, go do that. Yes, do that. No, not that, but that. And it was like a practice to kind of get listening, to start listening to your body, to that gut that is guiding you to bring the most aligned opportunities in. Okay, so that's all I've got for generators. So again, go get your own chart from my website if you don't have it. Or if some of this sounds familiar, like, hey, I think my husband might be a generator, go print his chart out too. It's super helpful to see what people are in your life and it just it sometimes it just explains why they are the way that they are. the next episode we're gonna talk about manifestors, and we will see you there.
