Ep. 12: Splenic Authority: The Whisper
What if you could know whether something was right for you, in an instant, without being able to explain why?
In Human Design, Splenic Authority is all about intuition, instinct, and knowing in the present moment. Unlike Emotional Authority, which needs time, Splenic Authority is immediate. But there's a catch: it's incredibly quiet, and that intuitive knowing can disappear almost as quickly as it arrives.
In this episode of Human Design Field Notes, we're exploring what Splenic Authority feels like, how to recognize those subtle intuitive hits, and why your biggest challenge might be trusting what you knew before your mind got involved.
In this episode, we'll explore:
- Who has Splenic Authority and how it works
- What a Splenic yes or no might feel like in your body
- Why your intuition can arrive in an instant and disappear just as quickly
- How overthinking and other people's opinions can drown out your inner knowing
- Everyday examples of Splenic Authority in action
- How to support a partner or child with Splenic Authority
- A simple In the Field experiment to help you recognize your own intuitive hits
The big takeaway? Your intuition doesn't always come with an explanation. Sometimes the most useful thing you can do is notice what you sensed before you started thinking.

Sandy: Welcome to Human Design Field Notes. This is where we learn human design in a way that's simple, fun, and actually useful in real life. The kind of thing you can try for yourself, talk about with your girlfriends, and before long, you'll want to know everyone's chart. And I'm not just teaching it, I'm testing it too. I'm rebuilding my coaching business using my own human design and I'll be sharing the field notes as I go. The experiments, the insights, the wins, the mistakes, and probably a few things we can all have a good laugh about. Because human design isn't meant to be stared at on a chart. It's meant to be lived. I'm your host, Sandy Connery. Let's see where this takes us. Welcome to episode 12. This is the third episode in our authority series. And today we're talking about splenic authority. If you have splenic authority, your body is Design to give you information right now, like right in this moment. And it doesn't offer you any kind of logical explanation of why that's the answer. A splenic authority is so quiet, it's instinctive, and sometimes it's just poof, like gone as as fast as it arrived. So in this episode, we're gonna talk about exactly what splenic authority is, what that intuitive knowing can actually feel like in your body. And how you can learn to recognize it before your mind jumps in and talks you out of the decision. we'll also talk about how to support someone in your life, including children who have sponic authority. And towards the end, I'm gonna give you a simple experiment that you can try this week to start knowing how to start recognizing your own intuitive hits. Okay, but first we're gonna back up. And I want to give you a quick reminder of what I mean when I say authority. So in human design, your authority is your int internal decision-making system. It's how you are wired, how you're built, how you're created to make decisions. it's often referred to as like your inner compass, like go that direction, say yes to this, say no to that, or your like internal GPS. So rather than trying to think your way to the answer, like logic your way to the right answer, knowing and using your own authority type gives you a way of knowing what's right for you. Okay. So there are seven different types. The previous two episodes we covered emotional and we covered sacral, and they don't all work the same. There's some differences. So it's really important to understand what yours is. And if you want to figure out what your, if you're Splenic or not, then just go grab your human design chart. You can get that at sandyconnery.com for free, free download. So let's start with the first question, which is who has splenic authority? only about 11% of our population has splenic, and it's only the only manifestors and projectors that can have that. Let's dive a little deeper into what this spleen center is and how you can know when it's talking to you. So the splenic authority is all about intuition and instinct, like present in this exact moment. So unlike emotional authority, you're not waiting for clarity over time. This is not a wait to decide kind of authority. It's much more similar to sacral in that it's kind of visceral with this like immediate yes-no response. We talked about sacral in the last episode. And splenic knowing can be incredibly subtle, so quiet. It's like in that moment when something feels right or doesn't, right? You might have zero logic. You not might, you will have no logic to explain why something feels right. Or doesn't feel right, but you just know. It's an internal like knowing. The spleen doesn't shout, the spleen whispers. It's so quiet. A splenic yes might feel like like a quiet internal yes. It might be just like resonance, like yes, that's resonating with me. It could be just like an immediate feeling of rightness, like yes, this is right. It could be a bit of nervous excitement. It could be kind of a tingling or another physical con physical sensation, but very, very subtle. It's not like sacral, which is just like shouting again, the splenic tends to whisper. So a splenic no might feel like a bit of unease or lack of resonance. It could just be a feeling of like ick, or something feeling unsafe or off. And you probably won't be able to tell anyone why you're choosing, you know, whatever you're choosing. And it That part in our society, how we've all been kind of conditioned, that part of not being able to explain why you've made the decision can really be difficult to trust. Cause your mind is gonna want the evidence. Show me the facts, show me the spreadsheet, show me all all the logic, all the rationalization. Your intuition just might say no, right? there is no supporting documentation that you can provide. It's just simply an inner no. So the timing is really important. Whisplenic authority, again, like sacral, it's in the now. It's like right now, what is the answer for you? You'll get a tiny, tiny intuitive hit, a tiny little quiet whisper, the little yes, no, don't go, go, something isn't right. and then it can just disappear, poof, just disappears. Which means the challenge for all of you with splenic authority. Isn't necessarily figuring out the answer. It's noticing that you already received one. And I want to differentiate between like intuition versus analysis. So someone with splenic authority may get an immediate knowing and then spend hours or days or weeks trying to justify it, right? Like, but why don't I want to take that job if we could use that as an example? Why don't I want to take that job? The people are lovely. It's really good money. It's everyone around me is telling me to take the job. Maybe I'm just being ridiculous, right? But by then, once you've gone through this sort of thinking and listening to your mind, that quiet initial response is like buried under all these loud thoughts. So the practice is really to learn. To to to witness, to notice that first knowing before your mind starts jumping in and your brain starts to explain it to you or why you should do something or why you shouldn't. So imagine imagine if you're looking for a new house and you find a listing and you're super excited about it and it looks beautiful. It's in the right neighborhood neighborhood, it's in the right price, it checks all the boxes. But the moment that you walk through that door of the house. Something feels off. Like instantly, it's just a knowing. Nope, there's something funny about this place. You can't explain it. The finishings are gorgeous. The real estate agents, you know, like this is a great place for you. They're enthusiastic. they're showing you all the great things about it, but there's just something inside you that is like, no, not this one. Not this one. Something feels off. Like that kind of quick intuitive hit is like a an example of what a splenic authority could feel like. It's immediate, it's subtle, and there's no explanation. Or another example of listening to your spleen would be if you got an ex an invite to speak at an event. And even before you your brain is like, we gotta check the calendar and like what are we gonna talk about? How much time is it gonna take to prep or, you know, am I qualified? Or anything, you might just like have a little flutter of excitement. And a quiet sense of like, yeah, this feels right. Yeah, I want to do that. I want to do this. you don't know where that's gonna lead, you don't know who maybe is even in the audience, but just something about this invitation feels really right. That's another way that your authority could show up. So challenges or struggles for people with splenic authority are like letting these loud thoughts or other people's opinions of what you should do override that quiet intuitive hit that you experience. You could also have a tendency to like go around and around and around over a decision, like mulling this decision over in your mind, over and over and over, trying to come to like a rational decision, even though that first you you even though that decision felt Clear initially to you, right? The mind jumps in and overtakes. if you try to explain your decision, you know, it just might not be logical. So you might really be try struggle trying to explain to someone why this is what you want. You could second guess an instinct, right? Because it just arrived too quickly. So how could it be right? Like, how could you know? You haven't thought about it, you haven't done the research, right? Just came. That can't be right. And I think that's It's so interesting because our our world is so focused on like thinking and proving and you know, like the mind is gonna you're you're gonna think your way to a decision. That's how you do it. you might also miss the whisper, the answer, because life is just so busy, right? You just don't have a moment to kind of tune into yourself as you are presented an opportunity. You're just so distracted with everything that's happening around you. And you can also be very, very influenced by someone else's excitement about an opportunity that maybe your initial reaction was a no, but they're so excited that you agree to it. So it's like there's this tension between like the mind wants certainty and facts and reasons, and your spleen just knows. And it'll it'll hand it over to you in this little whisper and it just knows. So there's this tension between what we think we should be using to make a decision versus what we are just quietly given Like the certainty and knowing, let me just make sure I'm saying that clearly. Certainty and knowing are two very different things. Okay, let's talk about what it's like to be in a relationship with someone with splenic authority. So you never want to demand an explanation for their decision or for their knowing. Like, why did you just you know, tell me why you decided against this house. Don't wanna do that because they can't. It's not logical, right? It's their intuition speaking. Don't don't assume that a fast decision is an impulsive decision. This is how their decision making works. It is impulsive. It is immediate. So don't assume that it's wrong because it came it because it came so fast. You can also give them space and some quiet when they're trying to hear themselves, Instead of you kind of being infectious with your e excitement or What you want, you could give them just some space to like tune in and like really listen to that intuition. And respect something that they say no, it doesn't feel right, right? Even when they can't articulate why. also don't encourage them to take three days to think about it, right? If they already have a very clear answer, a very clear intuitive hit, don't don't encourage them, like take some more time, like sleep on it, or give yourself a couple days to decide. If they know, they know, and you should trust that as well as them. And if you have a child that has a splenic authority, which I do, you want to really support them in this fast decision making process. When they are connected to their intuition, which we all know kids are much more connected than us adults, they make decisions fast, these splenic kids, right? And so don't support them in that quick decision. Don't encourage them to wait to decide because they know and they're expressing their own. decision making to you. So you wanna support them. You don't want to ask them to wait. Trust the decision, And don't second guess it. And don't try to make them explain it to you. Validate to them how powerful their intuition is, encourage it and honor it, and show them what a a an incredible gift, like an incredible force that they have to connect and trust that inner knowing. I know for my child, there is so many times that he would make decisions quickly when choosing something. And I always saw it as him not thinking through not thinking things through. And I would be like this or this or that. He like, no, this. Like he already decided. He was so irritated with me, like, I I know my answer. I told you my answer. Why are you giving me more options? So obviously I didn't know human design back then but I didn't I was never able to override him. Like he always knew and he was always right. which is kind of interesting to reflect now. Anyway, okay, so let's talk about in the field. So if you are someone that does have splenic authority, here's a little exercise that you can do this week. So don't for the next seven days, like just don't try to manufacture and force your intuition. Just start noticing, start witnessing. So for example, if you are to I don't know, like walk into a room or if you're meeting someone for the first time, or if you hear an idea or you receive an invitation to go somewhere, what happens internally when you in that very, very first moment, Before you start analyzing it, before you question it, before you start trying to explain it, before you ask what somebody else thinks of the opportunity, was there a tiny little pull, a little resonance? Was there hesitation? Was there a like an imperceptible no? you don't have to act on everyone, but just simply start to collect these sort of intuitive hits and start to learn what your body, what a yes is and what a no is. And like what did I sense before I started thinking? So it's so fast. That's it for Sponic Authority. Next up, we're going to be talking about willpower authority. And again, for those of you who have sponic authority, just start to pay attention to that whisper. Thanks everyone. We'll see you in the next episode.
