Trainwreck: The Self-Destruction of Shia LaBeouf

I'm your host, Jim Chapman, and I am bringing you an exposed original series episode and I'm gonna be going back to my roots a little bit with this one, and I'm going to tell you the story of the rich and famous and focus on film stars Shia Labuff. Now, there's a reason that I decided to do this episode, and that is a very recent event over Mardi Gras in New Orleans where Shia was involved in several bar fights. He was arrested. More on that later, but it definitely got me digging more into this guy. Now, I did know that Shi Labuff had a history, if you will, of this type of thing, but until I really dove into his post, I didn't realize how bad it really was. Shia, the star of the Transformer series, Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull, Dysturbia Holes and many others, has fallen completely off the rails, in my opinion. So we're gonna get into his story today, and I'm gonna give you a history on Shi Labuff that you may not actually be familiar with. And for Shia, this started out in nineteen eighty six when he was born in Los Angeles, California. Now. He was the first and only child of his parents, Shana and Jeffrey lebuff

1:54 And he was named after his paternal grandfather. And I really like the name Shia. And it's interesting that Shia means gift of God in Hebrew. Now. His mother was a ballet dancer. She was an artist. She was a performer. And his dad was a Vietnam vet. Was a rolling stone. Really, he was all over the place. He did whatever he had to do to earn money. He was a radio clown, he was a hot dog vendor, a circus performer, karate instructor, drug dealer. His parents really embraced what you would term the hippie lifestyle, so Shia in those early years. He grew up in what is known as the Echo Park area of Los Angeles. This is a working class, diverse area of LA where people pretty much loved paycheck to paycheck and the labbuffs. They were no different. By the time Shi was three years old, he would already realize things at his house pretty chaota. His dad allegedly suffered from PTSD from Vietnam, and he was often absent from that household. He was chasing band gigs or he was dealing drugs. Hi would recall later remembering many instances of his parents fighting inside the household, and he would recall that it was primarily over money. And it was also

3:26 around this time, at the age of three years old, that Shi would begin performing as a way of helping his family with the bills. He would dress up as a clown and serve as a street performer for tips, and he would sell hot dogs and snow cones on street corners, just whatever this guy could do to make money at three years old. Now, sadly, this did not help stave off those arguments between his parents, and in nineteen eighty nine, when Shi was still just three years old, they separated. Now, from the ages of four through eight, not much changed, and as a matter of fact, things would get even worse. The family continued to struggle financially and his father would sink deeper into a heroine and alcohol addiction. Now his father would be in and out of rehab. He would even bring Shia to his AA meetings at a very young age, and Shia would later describe his father as quote tough as nails, but would also describe him as very abusive. During this point in his life both mentally, physically and also emotionally. He even had a situation during this point where his father had a flashback from Vietnam allegedly and pointed a loaded shotgun at Shaia, threatening to kill him. Now, he would continue to street perform during this time, and he would provide

4:58 like a focus on his comedic aspect of his personality, and his talent would really start to take shape even at this very young age. Now, in nineteen ninety five, at the age of nine, he and his mother, they would get evicted from their home in Echo Park and they would leave there and they would go to Tuanga, California. This is in the San Fernando Valley, and this area was a very tough area. It was known actually as the biker capital of the world. The big biker gang there was known as the West Side Crazies. So there were several things that when sideways in Shia's life. Outside of that eviction at the young age of nine years old, his first arrest would occur. At this very young age, he apparently admired his neighbors Nike Cortes shoes so much so that one day he steals them from his neighbor's home.

6:00 The neighbor costs police and Shia is taken into custody for about six hours and then he gets released. I mean, he's nine years old. What are you going to do with him? Right? So at this point the hope was maybe this would scare him straight. And also the same year, y'all, nineteen ninety five, while his father is in rehab, Shia overhears his mother allegedly being raped. Now, during this rape, he hid under his bed, which he would say later and I fully believe this created almost a PTSD response in his brain, and he would say to this day that he feels an enormous amount of guilt over hiding under that bed during this rape, which I mean, he's nine years old, y'all, what could he have done? And truth be told, it probably would have made the situation worse if that were even possible. But I totally get the guilt. And this is an extremely formidable time in one's life, and that really fucked with him, for lack of a better word. You ever hear the phrase show me a boy at nine, and I'll show you a man at twenty nine. These years they shape you mentally, and so far it isn't looking good for Shia. So a couple of years later, in nineteen ninety seven, at

7:30 the age of eleven, Shia is arrested again, this time for stealing a Pokemon game boy from a local kmart. He gets detained briefly and then he's released again. At this point, he's eleven years old. You really can't do much about it. Now. Things would start to turn around for the better for Shia after this incident. He had a friend and that friend lands a job as an extra on a TV show, and he was kind of enamored by that, and he figured, hey, I can do that shit. So at the age of eleven, he would pick up the Yellow Pages and he would start calling agents and get this, he would pretend to be quote Shia Labuff's manager to get an agent to represent him at eleven years old. Now interesting side note on this.

8:25 He would say later that he learned how to talk to these agents and pretend to be Shia Labuff's manager by watching his dad and these other guys communicate in those alcoholics anonymous meetings. He would go with his dad, as I told you, So, my point there is you just never know where you may pick up a skill right now, apparently this worse. Of course they knew that this kid was pretending to be a manager, but they got such a kick out of it, like, yeah, come on in, have Shia come in for an interview. So at the age of twelve, he actually lands his first acting gig and he makes his film debut in a very low budget holiday film that was called The Christmas Path.

9:16 In addition to that role, that same year, he also has small parts in several NBC shows and Disney TV movies. So things are looking up for Shi. He's working for some really big production companies and by thirteen years old, the roles don't slow down. They keep coming. He had roles in The X Files Suddenly Susan, both very popular network shows back in nineteen ninety nine. Now, all of these roles they are bit parts, but he was honing his skills. He was earning his stripes in the acting field, and this is something he would take great pride in later on in life. So by late nineteen ninety nine, shy skills in persistence they really pay off when at the age of thirteen, he lands the starring role in a Disney Channel pilot of a new show called Even Stevens Beans, How did you get in here? Beans?

10:18 Is like that that policeman in Terminator too. You know what I'm talking about. I swear he goes liquid. He can fit that through cracks in windows, underdoors, through little key holes. I'm hungry, Let's get it sandwich. And that show would absolutely kind of pull him into stardom. The show would provide a very steady income for the entire Labuffe family. Right, Shia was actually making thirty two thousand dollars a month. This thirteen year old, who just a few years prior had got evicted from his mother's apartment with his mother obviously, was now making nearly four hundred thousand dollars a year guaranteed as long as he's a part of that show.

11:03 So during the ages of fourteen and seventeen, this is from two thousand to two thousand and three, these were really breakout years for Shia. Even Stevens runs for three seasons, that's sixty five episodes, and he would win numerous acting awards, including an Emmy Award and the Emmy goes to Gotta Love the Disney Channel Shia lah Booth. Oh my god, sixteen got an Emmy. What the hell? Wow, wow, wow, I don't know. Oh my oh my god, I don't know what we think. I don't know how to breathe. I oh my god, oh my god.

11:43 This is absolutely clable with even Stevens. I'm so happy. I haven't gotten the wrap up yet. I'm just kind of stalling. Oh my god, this is crazy. There's the wrapping up there. An even teen, love would blossom because the girls, they would start to take notice. And in two thousand and two, at the age of sixteen, he even goes out on a date with another Disney Channel actress rising to start them and you may have heard of her, Hillary Duff. Now, as the story goes, Hillary, who was fourteen years old at the time, was the star of Lizzie McGuire and the sixteen year old Shia. He goes out on a single date to a sushi restaurant and although it was a nice date, both would describe later that there was just no chemistry there between the two, so it was just a one time thing. But he is getting a lot of attention during this time, and he dated several fellow actresses and even Colie Williams, who was a singer for the teen Girl group three LW big group during that time, the Cheetah Girls, another big group she sang for both. He started dating her and she was also big time back in those days. So he's a teenager, he's rich, and this is tougher to deal with than you may think when you come from nothing, and those issues would start to surface in the near future. So

13:16 by two thousand and four, at eighteen years old, Shi transitions to big budget movie roles. In two thousand and five, at nineteen, he stars in a golf movie. This is called The Greatest Game Ever Played, and he played the role of a golf caddie. And it is on the set of this movie that he meets the daughter of a movie producer and her name was China Bresner. She was also eighteen and they would date for three years until two thousand and seven. Now, unlike subsequent relationships, this relationship seemed very stable. Later Shi would say the only reason they really ever quit dating wasn't love related, it was his career demands. But these three years were not without drama completely. In two thousand and five, just a year into that relationship, Shia is arrested for the first time.

14:15 As an adult when, according to reports, he threatens his neighbor with a kitchen knife over a dispute over a parking spot in Los Angeles. Now, the neighbor pulls a gun in response. Allegedly, police get called, and although Shy claimed self defense, he was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon. He stays in jail for like twenty four hours, and then the charges mysteriously get dropped. He was nineteen years old at this time, so professionally, Shaya's star continues to rise, and I mean fast, like a rocket ship, and by two thousand and seven, at twenty one years old, he finally does it when he lands the starring role in a movie called Dysturbia. He also lands a starring role in a movie you may have heard of called Transformers.

15:11 Both of these in two thousand and seven, and these two films alone gross over seven hundred and nine million dollars at the box office, and at this point in time, shi Labuff becomes one of the biggest movie stars on planet Earth. It's also in two thousand and seven that when seemingly everything is going right in his personal life, that his private life seemed to be falling apart. On November four of two thousand and seven, at the age of twenty one, yet another arrest when while in Chicago, Illinois, Shia gets arrested for misdemeanor trespassing after refusing to leave a Walgreens when asked by security. Reportedly, he was shit face drunk and he spends two days in jail over the incident. Now, those charges were later dropped when he completes community service. Also in this year, he is rumored to have dated Rihanna. Now, the story goes they were set up through a mutual friend. They went on a single date in Beverly Hills, but again they didn't have any chemistry. But interesting fact on Rihanna, y'all, I didn't realize that Rihanna is one of the richest females in the world. Do y'all know? Her net worth today is over one point four billion with a B dollars. Now that's a result of not her music career, which is

16:44 what I would have assumed, but her cosmetics brand primarily. I mean that chick is balling. Just took me by surprise when I was doing my research on this podcast. But back to it. Two thousand and seven, highs and lows for Shia, and in two thousand and eight, those highs would continue when a Transformer sequel as well as an Indiana James sequel both drop at the box office and combined generate over eight hundred and thirty six million dollars in revenues. So Shia's last four film jaw combined are responsible for a staggering nearly two billion dollars. Now, this guy is absolutely on fire at twenty two years old, regardless of what's going on in his personal life. Behind the scenes, it also comes out that he was involved romantically with his co star in the Transformer series, allegedly Megan Fox. So professionally never better for Shia, but the loews keep coming for him as well in two thousand and eight. So on July twenty seventh of two thousand and eight, at three o'clock am, shy is four pickup collides with another vehicle while he was attempting to make a left turn, and the impact cause Shia his truck to roll over. Police arrive at the scene. He's reportedly

18:15 exhibiting a lot of signs of being intoxicated. However, he does refuse a blood alcohol test and he is pretty injured. He had some head injuries, some knee injuries, and his hand was actually so severely injured that he had to have surgery. He also had a female passenger who fortunately just had minor injuries, and as I said, he refused to take the blood alcohol tests, so subsequently he automatically loses his license for a year. But you can see the warning signs here, right. It seems like the more successful he gets, the more he kind of falls off the rails behind the scenes. This is the point y'all, the point in Shy's history where everything seems to start going downhill in twenty ten. In twenty eleven, his final to what you consider big movies hit the theaters. First was a continuance of the movie Wall Street. It was called Wall Street Money Never Sleeps, and it's a moderate success.

19:25 Gros is about one hundred and thirty five million dollars, but the budget on that film was only seventy million, so it made some money. I mis doubled its money there. But then Transformers Dark of the Moon premieres and this becomes the second highest grossing film of twenty eleven. Get ready for this box office total one point two billion with a B dollars. Those were the highs of those years for Shy, and now on the lows, he gets in a b at a bar in Sherman Oaks, California. He gets handcuffed in that incident, but not arrested, and then in October of twenty eleven, another bar fight, this time in Canada while filming a movie. And this is also the year he meets a stylist on the set of a movie called Nefomaniacs of All Names, and that person's name is Mia Golf and she would play a major aspect in his life ever since, and will get into more of that in a bit so. Heading into twenty thirteen, Shy wants to test himself on Broadway. He wanted to do some live acting, and he lands apart opposite of Alec Baldwin. Now he had been preparing for this role for two years. Alec Baldwin's role was initially going to be played by al Pacino, which for the past two years Shi had been preparing and renting with

However, some scheduling conflicts on Pacino's side forces him to decommit from that role, and Baldwin stepped in really shortened at us like two weeks before this Broadway show was gonna go live, and Shia he was intense in this role, like he was for all of his roles in side note Quickly, Shia took this acting shit serious, so serious that in fact, one character he was playing, he felt like the dude should be missing a tooth, so he pulled his own freaking tooth out. That's how serious he took his craft. Now, Baldwin, he was a seasoned actor and reportedly at the time he found Shia just way too intense. They just didn't geehaul very well, so much so that well, I'm gonna let Shi tell you the story. Listen to this clip from the David Letterman Show.

21:59 And he got fired? What what? What did you get fired from? What did you get fired? I was doing a play out here, I got fired. Fromm Is this the thing with Alec Baldwin. That's the thing with Baldwin. Yeah, who's a buddy of yours. This is good to be here on April Fools with you. No, I'll tell you something. Alec Baldwin has been such a good friend, not just to me but to the show. And he was going. Way back like and he's a good dude. He's a good dude, and. The show is terrific and tremendous actor and one of those guys when you go to see him, oh my god on the screen, you're just so happy he's there. Now, what did you do to him? I think, I think, what you guy? I'm pretty passionate and impulsive, and he's a very passionate.

22:43 Individual as well. And I think you know, that impulsiveness and that passion makes for you know, some fireworks. This was This was a stage play. It was a stage play. It is a stage a great stage play. What is it called. It's called Orphans Orphans? Had you orpheus orphans Orphans? Had you done a. Broadway production before? Never in my life? No? So now tell us how you felt going into this? Felt pretty strong going in, actually looking forward to it, looking forward to the show. Yeah, yeah, I liked it a lot. Yeah. I read something that Tom Hanks said, who's also opening tonight in a Broadway play. He said, television is for writers, film is for directors, Stages for actors. Yeah you feel that way? Yeah? Yeah?

23:24 So why why did you get fired? Uh? I think I think because I think because me and Alec had tension as men, not his artists, but his men. I think in a room that became a hard thing to deal with, you know, and when you're when you got tension as men, that's tough. Till July. I think, you know, it's cool for increments, but I think to do that for a long period of time now tough. Had you known how I liked before I met Alec briefly? Yeah, before we started, right? And how would you describe your relationship with him now? I hope it's pretty good. I mean he's a pretty he's a great actor, and I wish him the best of love. Now, can I suggest a couple of scenarios? Sure? Uh? I like went to the producers and said, I can't take it another day?

24:05 Fire him. I think that I think that might have been what happened. Really really yeah, No, I just made that up. How could that be what happened? Others? It's like it's like this for the tourn No, Uh, what creative differences? I think that's what you got to say as sort of a business savvy answer for what what what actually happened? Now, there were there was a time there was a guy Jeremy Piven who was doing this. Wasn't that? This is not that Jeremy Pivens said he came down with mercury poisoning for getting too much. Nice right now. No, this wasn't that. I would have died to. Do this show with mercury poisoning. Yeah. Uh. And you can't go back now, can't you?

24:46 No? No, No, they got the show they need, They got the show. Got they got another guy in there. Who'd they run in? A great actor? Actually they didn't run in nobody. He's a great actor's name? Is Ben Foster's terrific in the show? Also, now, would you consider doing another play? I would? Yeah? And you also went to a performance of the show set right down set right down front. Was the only ticket that I could get? Actually really. Yea? Now is that is that an interference to your former actors the guys? Oh geez, there he is. I don't. I hope not. That wasn't my intention. Honestly, I've been part of the play for three years and I showed up as a fan. Now, if I were to arrange a reunion with you and Alec Baldwin, would you be up for that?

25:28 Or is this gone? Is this scorched earth. I mean, I mean, I think that'd be a tough one to pull off. Man, I mean, I'm all for it, you know, but we're punches thrown, no, No, punches thrown. No. Well, I don't know what to say, because I admire your work. I don't know you as well as I know Alec. But Alec to me is the guy. He is the guy, and I'd like to see this reconciled somehow. Here it is right here, Alec. I think you're awesome. Man. That's it, you know, that's it. That's it. That's yeah. So, I mean, Shy played it off well, but with problems off the set and now having problems with other actors, especially major actors like Alec Baldwin, he is not doing himself any favors. And I misspoke a little bit earlier when I said he would not make any more big films.

26:23 There was one more when he started opposite of Brad pitt in Scott Eastwood, which is Clint Eastwood's son. Incidentally, if you don't know, he started a movie called Fury with them, and there was an incident on this set known as the spitting incident, which Eastwood detailed to GQ magazine, and Scott Eastwood said that in this scene, he meaning Eastwood, was supposed to chew tobacco and spit it on the back of a tank. I mean it was a war movie, so I'm talking a tank, a war tank. Well, in this paint a good picture of how Shi would get into his characters, how deep he would get into them.

27:09 Eastwood spits on this tank and Labuff loses his shit. He considered it very disrespectful, almost like Eastwood was spitting on the flag. Because he was so in the zone of his character. They actually almost came to blows, and Brad Pitt, of all people, had to break it up. Shi would say later he did not realize it was written into the Scrupt later on, so when he read the Scrupt, he didn't see a tobacco spit aspect of that scene, and he thought Eastwood was just being totally disrespectful. Now, this is also the very movie where he pulled his own tooth out, incidentally, that I told you about earlier.

27:56 So he's twenty eight at this point and it's in two thousand fourteen. In that same year, yet another arrest went on June twenty six of twenty fourteen, he is arrested at Studio fifty fourth Theater in New York during a play. He gets charged with disorderly conduct, criminal trespass, and harassment for slapping an actor by the name of Alan Cummings on stage in that production in the middle of the show. Mind you and witnesses would describe Shi as totally wasted, drunk before the show even started. He spends the night in jail, and he sentenced eventually to alcohol treatment and anger management for that incident. So let's go to twenty fifteen and remember that stylust that I mentioned earlier that Shi met while filming Nefomaniac. Well, they had been dating ever since, on again, off again, of course, but they have been now. When they met, Shia was much older, he was twenty six, she was eighteen. So in twenty fifteen, she's with Shia as he's filming in Germany.

29:13 It's one of those on again times for them, and they have a very public altercation that actually gets captured on video. The couple is seen exiting a taxi in the situation is obviously heated. Mia grabs Shai's backpack and refuses to give it back, and you can hear Shia in this video tell her quote, please give me my backpack. I don't want to touch you. I don't want to hit you. I don't want to be aggressive, but you're pushing me right now unquote. When this has said, he appeared drunk. Eventually he walks away. Then a few months later, in October of twenty fifteen, he is arrested again in Austin, Texas for public intoxication and he was reportedly exhibiting very aggressive behavior in that incident. Moving on from there, things are relatively quiet for Shia until October of twenty sixteen, when he marries Mea Golf. In twenty seventeen, there was a big downfall for Shia. Apparently marriage didn't settle him down.

30:27 In January of that year, he's arrested for assault in Queens, New York. In July of twenty seventeen, he's arrested in Savannah, Georgia, for public intoxication after getting into an altercation with a stranger. He tried to bump a cigarette from once again anger management substance abuse treatment. So in twenty eighteen, Mea and Shia they got problems. They filed for divorce. That was reported as amicable, and he starts day his co star on the film Honeyboy, and her name was to Leah Barnett and she's also known as f KA Twigs or just Twigs, and they date for approximately nine months, which Twigs would describe later as an intense honeymoon period followed by escalating controlling behavior. They officially split in May of twenty nineteen, and in twenty twenty, he actually reconciles with Mia.

31:31 He is the person he in twenty eighteen filed for divorce from, and at this point in time, Shi Labuff's life is an absolute fucking mess. In June of twenty twenty, he's arrested yet again when he allegedly steals a man's hat and gets into a fight in Los Angeles. In that case, he's charged with misdemeanor battery and petty thuff and for those charges a diversion program that actually keeps it off his official record. But in December of twenty twenty, that is when the bombshell of his life drops when Twigs files a lawsuit in La County Court. It's really bad.

32:18 It alleges sexual battery, assault, emotional distress, gross neglect, and y'all know how our roll. I have that lawsuit in front of me, so I'm going to review it for you now, and I'm going to start with the facts of the case in this lawsuit, which reads. Taliah first met Labuff while filming the motion picture Honeyboy in early summer of twenty eighteen, a film in which both had lead roles. When shooting on the picture rapped till later that year, the two began a roemantic relationship. Talia was invulnerable and sensitive state at the time. She had recently ended a four year engagement and was recovering from how having painful tumors removed from her uterus. Within a week or two of dating, Labuff dramatically professed his love for her.

33:08 During the first few months of a relationship, Labuff restrained himself to over the top displays of affection, eventually winning to Leah's trust. Once Labeff had gained her trust in confidence, her living nightmare began. Starting in or around October of twenty eighteen, Labeuff convinced her to go live with him in his La home. Once she moved in, Labeff regularly exhibited frequent rage and bouts of jealousy toward her on a continual basis. He aggressively accused her of dwelling on her former fiance, a well known actor named Robert Pattison. Of course, that is everybody all knows the Star of Twilight.

33:51 He also accused her of rushing him into a relationship. Leabuff would escalate the most inconsequential disagreements, for example, for a matter of taste and art, to apocalyptic levels, often forcing her to stay up all night while he verbally berated her for hours on end about her supposed lack of taste. Labuff would take something as innocent as her kissing another man on the cheek in a music video or being polite to a waiter as nothing less than betrayal and an assault on his manhood and an existential threat to their relationship. Labuff would literally count the kisses she would give him on a given day and brate her she fell short of a target number. He would verbally assault her if he placed his hand in her lap and she failed to reciprocate or place her hand on top of his. He would end their relationship on the slightest grievance, and then mus immediately resurface desperate to resume it, Labuff suffered recurring periods of delusion, wherein he armed himself with firearms and on the belief that gang members were going to break down the door in any minute, going so far as to sleep with guns. She would be trapped in the share bed for hours at a time, without the ability to even get up to get to the bathroom for fear she will be shot by the Labuff should he wake up suddenly upon her return, Labbas's relentless mental and verbal assault and mistreatment of her eventually

Labeuff committed physical attacks against her on multiple occasions, each resulting in personal injuries, not the least of which was labuff knowing transmission of serious disease, which had forever altered the course of her life. When she was living with the Labuff in his la home, she remained in constant fear due to the threatening presence of loaded firearms. Beginning in November of twenty eighteen, Labuff insisted on keeping his front door unlocked and sleeping with a loaded rifle at their bedside. Shi had demanded she join him while he watched documentaries about murdered women before bed and refused to allow her to sleep with any clothes on. In these moments, she would often text friends in the middle of the night to devise a plan to escape his own. When Shi was filming the movie The Tax Collector, in which he played a gangster, he took on the role in real life. During one incident, while she was driving with him, he pulled a pistol from a compartment in his car and boasted to her that it was illegal to possess in California. On another occasion, he attempted to scare her by warning her that he pulled out one of his firearms on set and threatened others with it, bragging to her that he enjoyed getting their attention. Shia made a horrific boast to her that in order to get into character for his role, he would drive around neighborhoods in la and shoot straight dogs.

36:47 He claimed killing these dogs because he wanted to know what it felt like to take a life so he could get into the mindset of the killer, like his role in a movie. He knew that Taliah is a great lover of dogs and very close to her own dog, and his admission to animal cruelty disturbed and terrified her. To celebrate Valentine's Day in February twenty nineteen, he drove her to a hotel spot for a romantic evening. However, instead of a night of romance, she was subjected to a torrent of physical abuse from him. After she had gone to bed, she awoke to him towering over her and violently squeezing her body and arms against her will.

37:31 Shia then grasped his hands around her neck and began strangling her while whispering quote, if you don't stop, you are going to lose me. She was so terrified she could not move and lay there frozen while he continued to harm her. The following morning, outside of their hotel, he threw her to the ground, and as they drove back to his house, he drove manically, removing his seatbelt and threatening to crash the car unless she professed her love for him. Was horrified by his actions and fear for her life. Labuff eventually stopped at a gas station and she desperately attempted to escape from him.
