"Murdaugh" Episode Three | The Kennels

0:19 On June seventh of twenty twenty one, at ten to eleven PM, Dispatch alerts Cullington County Sheriff's Deputy Daniel Greene of a nine to one one call from the expanse of Mosaille property in which two people were shot impossibly dead. As Deputy green pulls into the kinnilary of the property, a frantic Alex Murdall approaches him just as he steps out of his unit, already mentioning a motive for the shootings that resulted in his wife and sons execution style murders.

1:00 Deputy Green and several others from the local Sheriff's office begins securing the scene and logging evidence. Shortly thereafter, Alex Murdall is brought to an unmarked unit of sled Detective David Owens and local police detective Laura Rutland as they interview Alex on the scene and get alex account of what happened that night. What Alex Murdall says raises more questions than answers and launches one of the largest investigations in United States history ever performed on a private citizen. And the last time we left you, it was immediately following the nine one one call made by Alex mrdall and police were sent to the scene. And now we're back with part three of this series. And as I mentioned, we left you last during that nine one one call that Alex mrdall placed after he discovered his wife Maggie and his son Paul shot dead at the Kennels. Now I do have that full transcript of that call, and there were a few things that bother me that I want to discuss in particular. First, in that call, at the thirty three second point, the dispatcher asked Alec Mardau, Okay, how did they shoot? Did they shoot themselves? And Alex's reply to that was oh no, hell no. Well, how would he know that? Just right off the bat like that?

3:21 Y'all? He answered the question so fast, and he really seemed so sure of himself. I mean, yeah, when he stopped and thought about it, maybe he would have answered that way. But I mean, he just walked in, had no time to process anything, just walked into that scene. And his son's brain is literally blown out of his head. His wife shot, she's lying on the ground. How can you answer that so definitively? Remember this is supposedly within a minute or two of him discovering their bodies, And that dispatcher asked, did they shoot themselves? And right off the bat?

4:05 Oh no, hell no. Just seems strange to me. Then at one minute, in fifteen seconds of the phone call, the dispatcher asked, okay, where where is he shot at? And she was referring to Paul, and mrdall states, ma'am, I don't know, but he has blood everywhere. I see his brain. I can see his brain. Then he continued with she's face down. I tried to turn her over a little bit, but she's got a hole in her head. And that made me wonder, is he trying to establish why his DNA would be on her and be on Paul, thinking ahead maybe and wanted to make sure that that was on recording, because of course he knew these nine one one calls are recorded. I mean, he's a lawyer.

4:58 It's possible. Then at the five minute and twenty four second point, he states, my son had a boat wreck. He's been threatened for moss and moss and moss, he's been hit several times, and I'm sure and then his sentence kind of trails off at that point and it's inaudible. But my question is was he making his first attempt to point the finger away from himself. Seems like a strange time to be hypothesizing about who may have done this. I mean, the police are not even on the scene yet and you're offering up suspects. Then at eight minutes and seven seconds that call, he says I already touched them, trying to get a to see if they're breathing. And I'm assuming he was going to say trying to get a pulse. Now again reiterating you're gonna find my DNA all over them and myself. Is that possible? I think so.

6:02 So the police were dispatched and an officer gets sent to the scene, and the first officer to arrive at that scene was Collington County Deputy Daniel Green. Now, fortunately Deputy Green had his body cam active and I have the full footage for you. Now, there are some spots in this that you're not gonna hear anything but walking around. There's nobody talking at that point, and there's some spots where you'll hear Deputy Green very clear, but the other officers that he's talking to, they're not as clear. They're you know, a few feet away from him or whatever. And this is being picked up by a bodycam, So just bear with me on it. But it's very important that you listen to this in full because this tells a story, y'all. So here it is what it sounded like that night June seventh, twenty twenty one, Deputy Green pulled up and approached Alex Murdall at the kennels and here's.

I left. I don't know what time. I can go back on my phone and tell you the exact times. Did you check did I check on? Did you check them that?

So let's talk about this for a minute, and I'm gonna give you several points of this bodycam footage that I found strange, to say the least. First, as soon as Deputy Green arrives on scene, the very first thing that murderal brings up is what the boat wreck establishing motive? Right, you also heard how detailed he was as it relates to what he was doing prior to finding his wife and son Dad. And it bothered me because it seemed too detailed, and that must seem rehearsed. I mean, I can't tell you my movements from yesterday in that much detail, much less when something this dramatic has occurred. Think about it.

47:13 He also asked Deputy Green several times if they were dead, the second time saying and I quote, so is it official they are dead? Now? While I can understand him asking the question, I can't help but think how strange it is for him to use the term it's official. Remember this, folks, if he were the one that shot them both, he would know that if either of them actually lived, he could be identified. So was this question out of concern for them or concern for himself? I'll let you think about that as we move on. He also seemed to process the whole situation really well, considering I mean, much of the conversation was pretty calm, and when he did have outburst, they seemed almost forced. And the video version, which I'm gonna upload for the Patreon supporters, you're gonna see that he cries, but there's no tears. He sniffs, but there's not really any snot right. That's important to note in my view.

48:29 It was also very strange to me that he left and got his gun and then went back to the scene. Now his concern certainly makes sense. You walk up two people are dead family members, your wife and son for that matter. Maybe you're fearing for your life, and you go get a gun. I don't know, but it just seemed off to me. I just can't imagine leaving my wife and son to go retrieve a gun from my house, which you have to remember, it's a good little track away from where he's at. He had to get in his truck and go back to his house and then drive back to the scene with the gun. Another thing was when the police grouped together while working that scene.

49:11 If you listen to the full bodycam footage, the most eery thing that I heard on that clip was when we'll call him Cop number one, He says to Cop number two, are y'all familiar with the family, and Cop number two says, I wasn't until I heard the names, and then Cop number one responds, what's the name? And Cop number two says murdoal and Cop number one just shuts the fuck up and walks off with a holy shit. Look. Now that again speaks to the influence of this family.

49:57 So I did get kind of a good laugh when the group of local cops, and there were many on the scene, they found out SLED was on the way. And y'all, you're gonna hear the term SLED throughout this series, so it's important to note SLED stands for a South Carolina law enforcement division. It's basically South Carolina's version of the state police in most states. So they find out SLED is on the way, and one cop says time to run the tape, and someone grab a piece of paper and start writing names and times. They knew they didn't want to fuck this one up right, Sled's on the way. So I will say that throughout this bodycam footage, I was impressed with the local police. They did a great job of securing the scene, asking questions. They were really total pros. You heard them walking around. They were looking for tire tracks, spent shell casings, and really other pieces of key evidence. So they did a great job vastly on that. They noticed two really big key pieces of evidence. First, they spent some time noticing that the blood inside the kennel where Paul was shot, a lot of that spatter was on the ceiling, and his body was found with his arms tucked under his abs. One cop even said it would point to suicide because he

51:28 would have to put the gun below him and fire upward, So we'd explain in that CoP's mind why his arms were tucked underneath his abs. But one problem with that theory, there were no guns at the scene. If you commit suicide, the gun's always going to be lying next to the body, right. It is not going to grow legs and just walk away. So that was nothing more than a fleeting thought to be sure, based on the evidence with that blood spatter being on the ceiling. But that would come up later and be a big part of this case, so stay tuned for that. They also noticed something else very strange, and that was the shellcasings found next to Paul and the shellcasings found next to his mom, Maggie were different.

52:23 Paul was shot with a shotgun, Maggie was shot with a rifle, a three hundred blackout to be exact, which, y'all, that's a serious rifle that that uses a seven point six y two millimeter bullet. It does a lot of damage. Now right off, you find different caliber shellcasings. What's that automatically point to in your mind? Two shooters? Right? I mean, who kills two people in quick order, Minji with two separate guns by themselves? I would imagine it's a pretty low percentage of all crimes where murder is involved with one person, So keep that in mind. So they secure the scene, they're gathering evidence. In the meantime, his personal lawyer and friend, Danny Henderson, he shows up and right there at the scene, two detectives interview Alex in their unmarking in it. So you have four people in this vehicle on the scene. That night, two detectives sleds David Owen in Collington County Sheriff's Office, Detective lor Rutland, Alex Murdall, and Alex Murdall's personal lawyer. Here's that interview that same night.

Now, how does he know the killer or killers did not come in through the woods and leave that way. I would have been saying, I got deer cams, let me show you where they are so we can catch these fools.

So his story at this point to the detectives was he went by his mom's house to check on her because she's in the late stages of Alzheimer's, and then he went home, he saw that Maggie and Paul weren't there, called them a couple times, and then went to the kennels to see if they were there, and that's where he found them dead. That was the first time he had been to the kennels that day, according to Alex. Remember that statement because it becomes heavy into play later on.
