Day 2 of the Tupac murder trial just delivered the first real courtroom fireworks. Nearly 30 years after Tupac Shakur was gunned down in a drive-by near the Las Vegas Strip, Duane “Keffe D” Davis is finally on trial for orchestrating the killing. On Day 2, the prosecution continued building its case with crime scene evidence, autopsy details, and testimony from people who were deep inside the Death Row and Compton worlds.
Former Las Vegas crime scene analyst Thomas Kern walked the jury through the physical evidence recovered from Tupac’s body and the scene. Medical examiner Dr. Lisa Gavin reviewed the original autopsy findings and confirmed the fatal gunshot wounds that ended the rapper’s life six days after the shooting. Then the temperature rose. James “Mob James” McDonald, a longtime Suge Knight associate and former Death Row figure, took the stand and immediately declared himself a hostile witness.
He locked eyes with Davis multiple times, told the defense attorney their questions were going to get Davis in trouble, and made it clear he had no interest in helping send the defendant to prison. Reggie Wright Jr., the former head of security for Death Row Records, also testified about the security setup that night, the heavy use of cell phones and walkie-talkies, and the aftermath of the shooting.
