Becoming 47 Part 5 | Sheriff Grady Judd Weighs in

So before we get into today's episode, you know, I'd like to give you a little bit of breaking news coverage first, and there have been a few things that we need to cover. And if you'll remember, I told you in a previous episode that at the event in Butler, there were no recordings of the radio chatter during the event. Now it has come out that some body cameras were on, but strangely enough, there was no audio until after on those body cameras. However, there was an interesting, to say the least, video that

1:41 came out on ABC from a body camera where a local police officer was absolutely pissed at the Secret Service following this shooting. So I want you to listen to this clip tonight. Newly released body camera video is revealing more of the confusion and frustration and right before and after former President Donald Trump was shot. He would post the guys. I told him that the Secret Service. I told him that Tuesday. The footage, some of which is no audio, is from the Butler Township Police Department in Pennsylvania. It shows two officers trying to intercept the gunman on a roof, seconds before he tried to assassinate the former president last month.

2:25 One officer lifts the other to the roof. He sees the gunman off camera and falls back to the ground. That officer then runs to his car to grab a weapons close bro do he turned around on me as backup arrives. There's confusion about where the gunman is. This building, who's on top of this building? The left one. By the time that officer returns to the roof, a sniper had already shot and killed. There would be assassin. The officer questions the apparent lack of communications. I was calling out, bro on to the roof, We're not the same frequency. About ten minutes after the shooting, another local officer with the Service. He would post the guys, No, we're inside the building.

3:11 I talked to here Service to post guys over here. Now in that clip you heard the following, I called out the shooter, are we on a different frequency? And at that point the local officer was on the roof with a Secret Service agent. Then ten minutes after the event, he runs into his little I guess it's a trailer or a substation that they had at the actual rally, and he's talking to other officers and he says, I told them on Tuesday they needed a guy on that roof we were inside the building. He said that on the actual recording. So to me, that's important. An officer is admitting on that video that he told the Secret Service days but for the incident to put someone on that roof, and he was pissed off about it. Now, our next bit of breaking news is in regards to the meeting that Trump had with the FBI, which I told you was coming up on the last episode, episode four. Well, ABC News covered it, and I'm going to read you a quick article from that coverage, and I need to read it verbatim because I'm quoting someone else's articles. So I'm going to say the shooter's name while reading this article, as much as I hate to do it, but I don't want to misquote this article. In a private meeting with Donald Trump last week, FBI agents and other law

4:42 enforcement officials offered the former president new previously undisclosed details about the twenty year old Pennsylvania man who came close to assassinating Trump at a rilly last month. Over more than ninety minutes on August first, law enforcement officials described shooter Thomas Crooks as a strikingly intelligent man who scored higher than fifteen hundred on his SATs, but who also may have been struggling for years with an undiagnosed disorder. Trump was told that through interviews with Crook's family and others who knew him, investigators learned that throughout high school, Crooks were routinely swayed back and forth while standing at the bus stop, but that Crooks never received any sort of formal diagnosis related to it, sources said. The law enforcement officials also told Trump that they are still unable to say exactly what motivated crooks to target Trump at the July thirteenth Rilly. In the days and weeks before the attack, crooks searched online for both Democratic and Republican politicians, and it's possible he chose to target Trump just because he was on the next big name to come through Pennsylvania.

5:53 Led by a senior agent from the FBI's Pittsburgh Field office, last week's meeting was scheduled to be with the FBI pres described as a standard victim interview of Trump, but much of it ended up being a briefing on the FBI's investigation, with Trump asking law enforcement officials more questions than they asked him. Beyond questions about crooks and how he made it onto the roof of a nearby building with an AR fifteen style rifle, Trump also wanted to know whether authorities had uncovered any foreign connection to the attack. The FBI agents told Trump they were able to access three foreign email accounts used by crooks because of his passwords, which were stored on his computer, but they had found no indications that anyone else was involved. The information gleaned from the foreign email accounts largely related to weapons and AMMO purchases, offering little insight into what drove Crooks to launch his attack. At a press conference on Thursday, Trump confirmed that he spoke with the FBI about Crooks, but he offered no further details about the discussion, saying only that the FBI had done a very good job. The FBI previously disclosed it Crooks appeared to have virtually no friends, with a social circle that was limited to his immediate family.

7:11 To illustrate Crook's high level of intelligence, law enforcement officials told Trumps that Crooks could name every US president from George Washington to present day. FBI agents also walked Trump through Crook's movements on the day of the attack, with the agents telling Trump that even though the shooter had paid his father five hundred dollars to buy the rifle from him months earlier, Crooks still had to obtain the rifle from his father before he made his way to the rally site. The FBI had not suggested that the father's apparent sell of the weapon was in any way unlawful. When Trump asked the law enforcement officials about claims that Crooks was spotted on a nearby building's roof long before he first opened fire, and other claims that the Secret Service sniper who ultimately killed Crooks waited ten minutes to take lethal action. The law a enforcement officials made it clear that such claims were not accurate. The law enforcement officials explained to Trump that even though law enforcement was made aware of a suspicious person nearby, the first time anyone in law enforcement saw someone on the roof of the building was about three minutes before Crooks opened fire, and the first time any law enforcement saw that the person was on the roof had a gun it was about thirty seconds before Crook's open fire. At that point, a local law enforcement officer had started to climb on the roof of the building when he encountered Crooks, who pointed his rifle at the officer, prompting the officer to fall to the ground and injure his ankle. The local officer then tried to alert other authorities. Trump was told

8:43 much of that was captured in body warmed camera videos that were released Thursday by the Butler Township Police Department and y'all. That's the one I referred to prior to reading you this article. The video showed officers scrambling around the building as he tried to find a way onto the roof, and one of the officers was raised on the roof only to fall down. Fucking this close, bro, the officer can be heard telling other officers after hitting the ground, when seconds later, a Secret Service sniper heard the gunshots. It took the sniper at most five seconds to locate the shooter on the roof and eliminate him with a single shot, and the video is released Thursday by Butler Township Police. An officer can be heard minutes after the shooting saying he was pissed he and his colleagues just couldn't find him before the shots rang out.

9:30 During Trump's meeting with FBI agents, the former president praised the Secret Service sniper, saying he did an amazing job and was an unbelievable shot. A spokesman for the FBI Pittsburgh Field Office declined to comment. So there it is. That is a pretty well written article on what went down in that meeting that the FBI have with Trump. That standard chit that the FBI does anytime there's a situation like this. It's not limited to former presidents. So let's go ahead and get into the meat of today's episode. Now, during this series, you've heard from a plethora of people, the Director of the Secret Service, the acting director of the Secret Service, the FBI, the state police, the local police.

10:23 But how about someone not tied to the gate, someone with no skin in the game, but an expert of boots on the ground, enforcer of the law, and quite possibly the most beloved and popular sheriff of all time in this country. I'm talking about none other than Polk County, Florida Sheriff Grady Judd. Now, personally, he is my favorite sheriff outside of my local sheriff, of course, shout out to Jason Ord. So much so that I actually have a jud on the ship health that's right. The sheriff is so popular that to raise money for charity last year, the Sheriff's office in Polk County made a boatload off of sheriff juds on a shelf for Christmas. They sold out in like three days, y'all, and they had a ton of them. He is absolutely beloved, and they gave all that money to charity. So let me give you a little history on this guy. In nineteen seventy two, he started his career as a dispatcher for the sheriff's office.

11:35 He was nineteen years old at the time. He was so young, in fact, that his dad had to buy his AMMO for him because he was under the age of twenty one, which at the time was the age he had to be to buy ammunition in Florida. By the age of twenty seven, he was a captain for the Polk County Sheriff's Office and supervised forty four deputies, all of them older than he was at the time, So that gives you an idea of his leadership ability. In two thousand and four, he runs for sheriff of Polk County, which is right in the center of the state of Florida, and he wins overwhelmingly. Then he's reelected in two thousand and eight, twenty twelve, twenty sixteen. In twenty twenty, he didn't have to be reelected because he ran unopposed. Also in twenty twenty, Donald Trump invited him to serve a three year term Coordinating Council for Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. That's how respected he was. Now, in addition to being in law enforcement fifty two years, he has also been married fifty two years, which, hey, if you're a police officer, it is very hard to maintain a marriage for that length of time. Just go ask a police officer. It's very hard. That's a worry filled marriage for your spouse. So for him to do

13:10 that amazing. Now, what Sheriff Judd is most known for is his press conferences. I would say he's probably the most open of any sheriff I've ever seen, and his pressers are so epic. They garner, quite frankly, millions of views on YouTube. Is he tough? You bet he is. And here's a good example of that. In a recent press conference. We have received information and social media that some of the criminals were going to tell their criminal conduct into the neighborhoods. I would tell them, if you value your life, you probably shouldn't do that in Pole County because the people of Pole County like guns. They have guns. I encourage them to own guns, and they're going to be in their homes tonight with their guns loaded. And if you try to break into their homes to still to set fires, I'm highly recommending they blow you back out of the house with their guns.

14:19 And if that wasn't enough for you, I'm going to play you a quick TikTok that has gotten over one hundred million views total. Listen to this. We don't choose to shoot people. They choose for us to shoot them. And if you choose for us to shoot at you, We're going to shoot. At you a lot. That's a guarantee. I told you, Sheriff jud don't play. So. I can't tell you how excited I was when he did an interview giving his unadulterated take on everything going on regarding the attempted assassination of Donald Trump. Now intrigued me because he is not only one of the most honest individuals that you will ever run into in law enforcement or any other field for that matter, but he's also someone who knows exactly how the process of law enforcement works as it relates to assisting with the protection of a political figure during your rally. He's dealt with a lot of those, so he can quite frankly speak out and point out all the bullshit that those that were directly involved in this situation won't tell you. So I want to make sure I credit Patrick Bett David's PDB podcast. He did an interview that I'm going to be clipping a lot of clips out of that you'll be hearing today, and I want to make sure that I paint the proper picture for you of how unique

15:50 Sheriff Judd is. In early two thousand and six, there was an incident in Polk County where a guy shot and killed both a canine officer and a nine and also wounded another deputy. Well, a man hunt ensued as you would think, and the police eventually caught the guy. A gunfight erupted and the police shoot the guy sixty eight times. When the media asked Sheriff Judd why they shot the guy sixty eight times, he responded with, get this, we ran out of bullets. Here he is discussing that very incident with PDB. When PDB asked him where that response came from.

16:38 Well, it comes from the heart, and it comes from the soul, and it comes from what the overwhelming majority of the people are thinking. This guy shot and killed our canine, shot and killed our canine handler, shot the backup deputy, then took the dead canine handler's firearm ran into the woods. City police came to back us up, shot at two of them and happened to miss them. Well. The next day we had the area surrounded. The next morning, when we had daylight, we had a swat team walked shoulder to shoulder through this wooded area in order to find him. Well, he pointed the dead deputy's gun at a swat team. What do you think is gonna happen.

17:22 You're gonna get shot a lot. You're gonna get shot so much you can read the Sunday New York Times through you. And that's what happened. So there you have that now, like all of us, Sheriff Judd had his thoughts after he saw that shooting in Butler, Pennsylvania on live TV, and he offered up those thoughts on that in the fact that politics definitely got in the way somewhere, and here's what that sounded like, and then we'll unpack it. When I saw the very first television interview of the shoe of President Trump, I knew immediately they screwed it up because regardless of what else happened, regardless of the different media perspectives, and they were just talking to whoever, the mere fact that they didn't have someone on the roof of a building one hundred and forty eight yards to the lectern where the president speaking is raw insanity.

18:33 That's not just a failure, that's raw insanity. There's also a water tower that you don't have to be on that water tower as long as no one else is on it, and you've got somebody at the base of the water tower. Now, as time goes on, there's failure after failure after failure after failure. But when you put political people in charge of professional law enforcement agencies, you get political decisions instead of professional law enforcement decisions. Well, I can tell you wake up, America. The public doesn't want political decisions when it comes to saving lives. They want professional decisions. And that's what saves lives. Unpacked that if you could, well, first political decisions political decisions is you've put somebody in charge of the Secret Service. They're a political appointment. Where did they come from, what was their background? Did they have the ability to do that job?

19:40 And the job is at that level. You're not going to go out there and train, but you're going to say, let me see the training curriculum. I know for a fact, following the rules, the Secret Service is well versed, well versed and I underscore of doing the appropriate security on an event like that. So what happened that day? Where did the failure start? Well, first and foremost, it started at the very top when she started dancing around and not publicly saying hey, listen, there's a full throated investigation underway. And I can tell you if I know nothing else, we've had mistakes occur because no one was on the roof securing it. And we in our county have worked with Secret Service over and over and over again. They're remarkably professional and there's never been a time when we wouldn't have somebody on that roof. So when you've got an appointed person that's the CEO, if you will, of the Secret Service, and they don't know exactly what's going on, I mean, when you have the president of the United States, or the past president of the United States, or potentially the future president of the United States that you are providing security for, you have to make sure you've done everything exactly correct.

21:10 So let's talk about it. And one quote I agree with one hundred percent is when he said political people make political decisions. It's genius and its simplicity, and it's absolutely true in my opinion, he is saying that there is a possibility that because it was Trump, the sense of urgency just was not there. And to me, that's a parent He's like all of us. He can't believe they miss the simple obvious things like the lack of that roof being covered or a counter sniper on the water tower. I mean, y'all heads should totally roll over those decisions. So then he was asked specifically about his experience with working with these type of events with the Secret Service, specifically at an event his department worked when Trump was in Lakeland, Florida for a rally in twenty sixteen.

22:12 How does that collaboration work. What's the protocol? Wait till you hear his response and the massive difference it was from what we know occurred at the Pennsylvania rally. Here's that Cliff, My SWAT team was there, my detail was there, whatever the Secret Service asked for. The lake and Police detail was there. We meet with Secret Service in advance, they send advanced teams in the president, as we know, who was then running for president, met at the airport. So the Secret Service is in charge of all of that, and they tell us, Okay, we'll take this position, you take this position.

22:56 They go so far. And I was just talking about my SWAT commander who's been on some of these. Hey, if you're on this roof, don't take your rifle because we've got rifles over here and we don't want the crossfire with high powered rifles. You use your handgun. So the Secret Service comes down to the training and the prep to tell you what kind of gun to have depending on your assignment in these particular areas. And I'm telling you they're very good at that. So for that to be a total flop there, you've got to say where did the problem begin. It always ends with the CEO and why didn't she immediately fly there that day and start immediately taking control of that situation and getting answers Why didn't she do that?

23:53 Only one that can answer that is her. But what happens in traditional police environment, the first thing they do is find a hole to dive in. And why they're diving in the hole, They think, well, who all can I blame this on? Well, the reality of it is that doesn't work. No one is perfect, no matter how well that protocol went that day. Something can go bad. People understand when you take responsibility and you make immediate improvements, or when you have messed something up, say we mess this up. And we didn't see any of that in the beginning, because that's not how the federal government operates.

24:41 So Sheriff Judd made a bunch of key points here. He discussed how detailed, if you will, the Secret Service is at these rallies, even down to what type of guns the other agencies are using and where they would be positioned so they can avoid crossfire. And if there was one failure that really stands out with this whole deal, folks, it was the lack of detail. That is really strange. How opposite it was this time around then when Sheriff Judd experienced it. So what does Sheriff Judd think about the communication or lack thereof. Listen to his response after he was played a short clip by the Butler Police stating they were told nothing by the Secret Service ahead of time on a plane of action to secure the event.

25:38 Listen to this. We were supposed to get a face to face briefing with the Secret Service snipers whenever they arrived and that never happened. So I think that that was probably a pivotal point where I started thinking things were wrong because that never happened, and we had no communication with the Secret Service. You had no communication with the Secret Service at all on that side. Not until after the shooting. Why by then it's too late. How do you process this? That's a failure with a capital F. And here's what I know. Our team works with does prep and advance, and our team is simply the very best. Secret Service is the very best. I've never been involved with a Secret Service and a Secret Service operation that we didn't have conversations down to the absolute minutia.

26:34 Can you be specific with that? Well, exactly like which guns do you carry for this particular assignment? Okay, the FEDS have one radio system. We have a different radio system. We have a radio system that statewide and local wide, local, all our local agencies can talk. But if the FEDS have a separate system, then we marry our local with the Feds. So we always have FED communications and they always have our communications every time, all the time. That's why this stuff that I'm watching on television, it's like, wait a minute, wait a minute, We couldn't have all brought our favorite two bottles of wine and made up this horror story with pencil and paper if we wanted to create the worst nightmare.

27:26 So I don't understand all of that because we always communicate with Secret Service. It's a mandate. And in my organization, if Secret Service didn't talk to us like we know they should, that would bubble up to the top to me. I'd pick the phone up and I'd call the big bosses at Secret Service and go, what the heck. But we've never had that conversation. We've never had to have that conversation. So you're putting a little bit of the onus on Butler's wall. You're not just putting it on Secret Service, every one of them. I'm putting it on all of them, the state police, the county police, the city police, and the Secret Service. If they weren't all talking together, they all had a responsibility.

28:10 Now, I'll tell you, Butler is a little bitty police. They may not know how all this works. Got it. The big guys come in and tell them you do this, you do that. They do what they're told. But did they I can't answer that question. But that's why I'm shocked because the Secret Service, I know, is very professional and does an outstanding John. Now, we all know we have been absolutely lied to. How many times during the last four episodes prior to this one did you hear the Secret Service claim they briefed local and state police. If they will lie about that, they'll lie about other things. That's all I'm saying. Now, all of that being said, I do agree with him that everyone who was there that day in a law enforcement role, they share some responsibility. If there were no briefings.

29:08 For example, you insist upon one, you shake some trees, ask questions, don't just hang back and say, well, I guess we're on our own and we're going to do what we think is the right thing to do. That was a mistake by the local police. And speaking of that in the local police issues, we've already in a past episode reference to confusion by the local police. And most of us have seen the video on the roof where the people are filming the shooter and they're saying he's got a gun, he's got a gun. Well, another video surfaced from a different perspective, and it shows several police on the other side of that building where everybody was seeing the shooter and they knew he was around, but they couldn't find him. And you could see maybe four or five deputies and they're scanning different parts of that roof trying to see if they can locate this guy. Now, that video was two minutes long, and you can hear Trump in the background, and he's doing his speech the whole time. There is absolutely no sense of urgency on the local police's part. They're really just kind of meandering.

30:22 They're just kind of looking around. They're not running. So what do you think the sheriff thought of that video? Well, PDB played it for him and here were his thoughts after watching it. It's all wrong. And I've heard that they had up to an hour and a half. That's at some point they actually saw the guy take out a rangefinder, okay, golf golf ringe, finger golf free At that moment in time, we'd run that guy down and he would have been with us having a conversation till the President left. He would not have ever gotten on the roof. But if we didn't find him, if he got lost in a crowd.

31:08 I didn't see a crowd, there wouldn't made any difference. We would have been on the roof ahead of time. We'd have been on the roof when we started staging and prepping for that event, so there wouldn't have been an empty roof for him to get on. And I look at that and I'm mortified. I'm absolutely mortified. You saw police officers that didn't know what they were doing. Now, that police officer on the ground doesn't have a ladder, but did you see him calling for a ladder? Did you see him pulling a car up so he can climb up on the roof and get onto the roof of the building. Nobody reacted. It's mortifying the entire event.

31:55 And y'all that particular club, which I'll post on the pay Patreon for the Patreon members, there's no urgency whatsoever none. So here was the question I wanted to ask, and that was did Sheriff Judd think this was intentional? Here was his response to that. I don't think it was intentional, okay, And because here's what I know, whether you're a conservative or a liberal, whether you're a Republican or a Democrat. As the sheriff, and everyone knows I'm a conservative and a Republican, I would give my life for a Democrat and a liberal president or someone running, because that's my job to protect them, because that's what we do in a democracy. We do what's right. We're not playing politics. It's not a political deal.

32:55 So do I think there was a quote conspiracy? Do I think there was? No? I think it was just absolute, total sloppy, lazy police work. That may be where he and I disagree just a little bit, y'all. I just think there had to be more to it than that then, just some really shoddy police work that day. I mean, to me, there were too many failures by way too many departments for this asshole to pull that off. That's just my opinion.
