Bad Teachers: Maris Nichols

Shout out to all of you who have messaged me on Facebook and said, hey, man, where are the bad teachers at Well, I'm bringing you one today. And although I have not done one of these in quite a while, in the absence of that, maybe one of the most blatant cases I have come across yet as surfaced. The case is really everywhere, So we're going to get right into it, and I want you to kind of imagine this as you're listening. It's a spring day at Alexander High School in Douglasville, Georgia. Students are moving between classes, football practices happening on the field, and in a biology classroom, a beautiful twenty five year old teacher is doing something that would shatter every assumption about who is supposed to protect our kids now. According to arrest warrants obtained by multiple news outlets, one student later told investigators they saw explicit videos on another student's cell phone, videos showing their biology teacher, Maris Nichols, engaged in sexual acts with students, not rumors, not whispers videos, and that was just the beginning of what authorities say they uncovered. Now today I'm going to deep dive into one of the most disturbing

1:52 cases of educator misconduct to hit Georgia in recent memory. You've got a young tea, a position of trust, multiple students, and a digital trail that investigators say led right to this chick's door. This is a story about how someone in a position of authority crossed every line, not only in classrooms, but in cars and through the phones that sat in students' pockets. It's about the investigation that followed, the charges that piled up, and the questions that remained for the community of Douglasville and for every parent who sends their child to school every morning. Now, by the end of this episode, you're going to know the timeline, the allegations that I'm going to quote straight from the warrants, the arrest, the bond drama, and what this case reveals about the systems meant to keep these students safe. It's why do bad teachers. We're going to examine it all the facts, the evidence, and what is really the human costs behind every charge. But before we go into the classroom, before we get to the arrest and the thirteen felony counts that have now actually increased, I'm going to take you back. I'm going to get you to understand a little bit about who Maris Nichols was before any of this came to light, because in cases like this, the questions that everyone asked me are the same, How does

3:23 something like this ever happen? And that's exactly where I'm going to start. So, Maris Nichols was twenty five years old when this first arrest warrant was issued. This was in May of twenty twenty six. She was a biology teacher and a member, believe it or not, of the football staff at Alexander High School. Now, this school is in what's known as Douglas County, which is just west of Atlanta, and by all outward appearances, Maris was a young educator building a career working with teenagers. She was mayored, she had a young child of her own, and on paper, she fit the profile of the dedicated teacher that many communities would hope to hire. But according to Douglas County authorities and the warrants that have now been made public.

4:14 Behind that professional image was a pattern of behavior that would eventually bring her face to face with the criminal justice system, not once, but twice in the span of just two weeks. So on May eighth of twenty twenty six, Nichols gets arrested and she's charged with two counts of improper sexual contact by a person with supervisory or disciplinary authority. She bonded out that same day. Then on May twenty first, she was arrested again, this time facing a much longer list of charges that brought the felonies alone to thirteen felonies. Now.

4:55 Those charges included two counts of child molestation, four counts of improper sexual contact by an employee, four counts of grooming a minor for sexual offenses, one kind of tampering with evidence in the original sexual assault related charges. Now. At this point, investigators said at least six teenagers were allegedly victimized, four of them identified as students at Alexander High School, and these incidents span a short but intense period of the spring of twenty twenty six. The warrants detail specific locations a school closet inside a classroom on April twenty third of this year, a parked car in a residential driveway just nine days later, and on going communication through Snapchat that investigators believe was used to send explicit photos and videos. And there are also references in the warrants to an alleged OnlyFans account and claims that are still under investigation that some students may have found that only fans account and attempted to use that information against her. Now, prosecutors later alleged Nichols violated her bond conditions.

6:11 Dozens of Times reports site as many as eighty five violations while under electronic monitoring or strict orders that included no internet and no social media access. Now, this is a heavy case. It's disturbing, and I want to be clear from the start and get the legal ease out of the way. These are allegations. Maris Nichols has not been convicted of any crime as of the time we are recording this, and in this country you're presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. But those warrants, those charges, the digital evidence investigators collected, and the statements from authorities paint a picture that demands a full deep dive, and that's what we're going to do here, and I'm going to walk you through this story chronologically, from what we know about our early life and path into education, through her time at Alexander High School, into the alleged crimes themselves, the investigations all of that. We're going to look at the evidence that investigators gathered, and we are going to know all the details. We're also going to talk about the broader issue that this case represents, because, as you know from listening to nearly one hundred episodes that I've done so far in the Bad Teacher Series, unfortunately, Maris Nichols is not the first teacher to face these kinds of allegation, and she won't be the last. The Bad Teacher Series exists to examine these cases. Honestly, I

7:44 don't do them for shock value, but I want you to understand the patterns, the failures, and what can be done to protect students moving forward. Now, before I go any further, a quick note on the content. The episode contains very detailed discs ushion of alleged sexual misconduct involving minors. It's graphic in nature, y'all, because it's real life, these real people, and to leave out the graphic details, in my view, not only waters down the seriousness of the crimes, but it also creates a massive injustice to the victims because you're minimizing the crimes. I have people from time to time and they'll put ugly reviews on Apple Podcasts or Spotify or something, and they'll say, Oh, he's too graphic, he gives too much of the details. We don't need.

8:38 We can infer basically, And what I'm telling you is that's an injustice to the victims. You're minimizing it when you do something like that. People need to know exactly what goes on with these sick teachers. So with that, listener discretion is strongly advised. And if you're sensitive to these topics, I get it you may want to turn this one off. And with that, let's get into it. And I told you about this school being located in Douglas County, Douglasville, Georgia, and it's part of the sprawling Atlanta metropolitan arians, the suburban community with a very large city around it, but it doesn't have the big city hustle of downtown Atlanta. It's close enough that many residents can commute to the city for work. It's a place with a strong high school sports culture, particularly football, which would later play a role in nichols professional life. And growing up in this kind of environment in the early two thousands to twenty tens meant a typical suburban Georgia childhood for many kids, public schools, use sports leagues, church on Sundays for some families, and the steady rhythm of the Atlanta suburbs. Now, we don't have confirmed details about nickel specific family situation, parents, occupations, exact childhood home life, which I like to get into that stuff when I

10:09 have it, but we can look at a broader picture of what shaped young people in that area during those years. Many families in Douglas County they valued education as a pathway to stability. Teaching long been seen as a respectable, stable profession, especially for someone who enjoys working with young people and has an interest in science or sports, like Maris did. Now by our high school years, Nichols would have been navigating the typical challenges of kids in the smartphone era. Social media was already deeply embedded into teen life. You got Snapchat, Instagram, and other platforms, and those are all common ways in which teenagers would communicate, something that would later become central to the allegations against her, but at this time it was just a part of her growing up. Now what stands out when I look at her later career is her involvement with the football program at Alexander High School, which to me that kind of suggests an early or developing interest in sports, athletics and working with student athletes. Many young educators who coach or support sports programs often have their own backgrounds in athletics, whether it's as a player, as a cheerleader, which is likely the way that Maris went, or they're simply fans who enjoyed the team environment. It's possible Nichols played sports

11:41 herself in middle or high school and simply gravitated towards the energy or the mentorship that comes with being around student athletes, but I don't have that information. It's just not out there. Now. We also know that she chose to teach biology, object that honestly requires a major interest in science, lab work and explaining complex topics to teenagers. Think about it, When you teach biology, it's not exactly the most interesting of courses unless you're really into science. When you're teaching that when you're explaining it to teenagers, got to make it kind of fun, right. That choice, to me points to someone who was comfortable in a classroom setting and have patients. They've communicated very well, and they knew how to break down difficult material. Now, for many young teachers, the decision to enter education would come from the desire to make a difference. Of course, my co host on Crime Wire Weekly, Kelly Jennings, was a teacher for more than twenty years, taught criminal justice at the college and the high school level, and she certainly has great communication skills. Now, prior to all that, you got to go to college, right, and by the time Maris reached college age, which I'm estimating to be around twenty twenty, she would have been entering a higher education system smack dab in the middle of COVID. And it's

13:15 interesting that many students during that period they would take classes online. They would deal a lot with isolation, and honestly, they would think a lot about the uncertain job markets upon graduation. Nobody knew what the hell was going to happen with COVID when it first started and reared its ugly head. Yet Maris did complete the necessary steps to become a certified teacher in Georgia. She here and a degree, and that's no easy feat during that time in history, so she's obviously smart. Now, Georgia's teacher pipeline moves relatively quickly for motivating people. A young person who knows they want to teach can often be in their own classroom by their early twenties, and Nichols appeared to have followed that path pretty successfully. She landed a position teaching biology at Alexander High School and was also brought onto the football staff, a role that would give her additional contact with students outside the traditional classroom setting, which we know now was a very bad idea. Think about what that looks like on paper, though, a twenty three or twenty four year old woman at that time, recently out of college, very pretty standing in front of a bunch of high school students, many of them close to her own age within six to seven years, and she's helping them on the football team. Now, in many schools, that kind of young,

14:46 energetic staff member can quickly become popular with the students because the students feel like they relate to that teacher a little better. They understand the current slang, these twenty five year old teachers, the social media trends, the pressures the teenagers are facing as they graduate. In that relatability, it can be a strength in education, but in the wrong hands, with the wrong teacher, it can also blur professional boundaries. Now, as much as I've dug into this one, I don't have public statements from former classmates or teachers or coaches describing Nickels either as a student or a young adult. No glowing profiles or warning signs of surface in the reporting thus far. So what we have, as a young woman who buy all our appearances, was doing what thousands of other young educators do every year in Georgia, showing up and teaching her subject. And that's the picture we can reasonably paint from the limited amount of information.

15:54 We have a suburban upbringing, an interest in science and sports, the lettering into teaching and coaching, and a fast track entry into a profession at a relatively young age, in a position that would place her in direct daily contact with hundreds of teenagers. But here's where the story takes a darker term because, according to the allegations that would later emerge, that professional relationship she was supposed to maintain with those students way crossed into something criminal. And let's start with the school. Now Alexander High School part of the Douglas County School District, located in the western suburbs of Atlanta, and it serves several hundred students and, like many Georgia high schools, places a strong emphasis on both academics and athletics. Football in particular very visible and important and boom and an important part of the school's culture.

16:58 Games on Friday Night drew families alumni in a broader community. The coaching staff and support personnel often became familiar faces, not just to players, but to the entire student body. And it's in this environment stepping up was Mayris Nichols, young woman early to mid twenties. She was assigned to teach biology, which was a core science class required for graduation. And in a typical Georgia high school, a biology teacher like may she may teach four to six classes per day, a mix of lecture, lab work, hands on activities. We've all taken biology at one point or another. Curriculum would cover cell biology, genetic psychology, evolution, human anatomy, and labs would involve microscopes dissections. Anybody out there remember dissecting a frog for the first time. I remember I was thinking, GODLEI, these frogs are huge. They're like big ass bullfrogs. I was expecting a little small frog. Anyway, I'll move on.

18:06 Experiments with plants or small organisms and data collection were all things that you do in biology class. From Maris, who was in her mid twenties standing in front of fifteen to eighteen year old students managing these activities that would have been pretty challenging and also pretty energizing. And in addition to all that, she also was involved with the football program. Now I couldn't find the exact title. I don't think she was like an assistant coach, right, I don't think she was certainly a head coach. It would definitely specify that probably more of support staff. We had when I was in high school playing football, we had a female teacher that was like support staff. She handled like scheduling things like that. Not the females can't coach a football team. I'm not saying that. It's just not very common, and especially at that young age, it would be supprising that she would be an actual assistant coach, and try as I may, I couldn't get an answer as to what she did for the football team. It just said she was part of the football staff. Now, her presence on the sidelines and around the athletic facilities, think about it. That gives you a lot of contact outside of normal class hours. Now in many high school programs, support staff help with equipment, film study, conditioning, travel, and mentoring.

19:28 I'm sure that's some of the stuff that she did. And this role would also naturally create additional opportunities for one on one interactions, conversations in the weight room or on the bus, in a different kind of relationship than a typical teacher student dynamic in a classroom. And that's important. And I've tried to imagine kind of a typical day for someone in her position and what that might look like. She would arrive at school early, planning morning duties. She would teach biology classes throughout the day, labs scheduled for certain periods. She would eat lunch in the faculty lounge, sometimes with other staff inside that lounge, and then she transitioned after the final bell to football related activities. Practices would often run from mid afternoon into early evening for me personally, and I'm sure that's what was the case there.

20:26 There might be film sessions, weight training, meeting with players, and on game days the entire rhythm of the school changes. Right. You got pepper Ally's early dismissals if you're traveling for a game and you're a player, and heightened energy really throughout the school. So for a young staff member, that role can be pretty attractive. It would keep them connected to the energy of high school life. It would allow them to build relationships with students in multiple settings, and many young teachers and coaches describe the athletic side of their job as the part that makes the long hours worthwhile.

21:07 They get to see students succeed on the field, They help them develop discipline and teamwork, and they sometimes serve as kind of informal mentors when personal issues arrive. Now in a school the size of Alexander High School, staff members who are involved in athletics often become well known across the student body. As you might expect, we knew all our coaches in high school. Think back to your days. Those were the coolest of the teachers, right, Nothing different here and this twenty five year old biology teacher would have been perceived by many students as relatively young and very approachable. As I discussed earlier, they had a lot in common with her they wouldn't have with the fifty five year old math teacher. Right. She's someone that understood music, social media like Snapchat and TikTok. She grew up with that stuff too, Not so much TikTok, but definitely snapchat and the daily pressures of teenage life in twenty twenty five and twenty twenty six. She could almost kind of relate to that. Now. According to the arrest warrants that were later released, some of the alleged incidents that would occur occurred inside the school building itself, specifically a classroom closet.

22:24 Other encounters took place off campus. One in particular was any Hummer, which was her vehicle parked in a residential driveway, and the warrants also reference extensive use of Snapchat for communication, including the alleged sending of explicit photos and videos. Now, these details suggest that any misconduct was not happening in plain view during regular class or practice time, but rather in moments when students and staff could be alone or communicate privately through personal cell phones, and the spring semester of twenty six appears to have been when this activity escalated or when it came to light. Warrants reference specific dates in April in early May. One alleged incident is described as occurring on April twenty third, as I told you, inside a school closet, and another is regarding that hummer and that occurred May second. Investigators later determined multiple students were allegedly involved, with at least four identified as Alexander High School students in a total of six alleged victims overall.

23:35 And again it's worth noting these are allegations and Maris Nichols has not been convicted, but it sure ain't looking good for her. So what I'm gonna do now is I'm going to walk you through the timeline as it has been reported from the warrants, and I'm going to read these warrants ver batam, and I'm not gonna say the name, even though I have the name of these students, I'm not gonna say this. I'm gonna read you what I have here and try to redact those out. So there's one application for a search. One it reads on May fifth, twenty twenty sixth, Sergeant C. Clark was contacted by the Douglas County School System. Sergeant Clark was informed that a student had come forward and told that another student by the name of I'm not saying it was having a sexual affair with a teacher named Maris Nichols.

24:23 That student went on to say she saw videos on this student's phone of Miss Nichols and the student in a vehicle having sex, and also a separate video of them having sex in a closet at the school. Miss Nichols is a science teacher and football coach at Alexander High School. Student is in Miss Nichols's third period class. This student told school officials that other student saw the video located on the victim's phone. This student wrote out a handwritten statement stating what she had seen. Miss Nichols did not attend school today. Victim has since been interviewed at the Douglas County Sheriff's Office and is confirmed he and Miss Nichols did, in fact engage in sexual conduct with Miss Nichols once in her vehicle, a dark colored Hummer H two suv in the back seat, and once at Alexander high school in the closet in her classroom on May sixth. After viewing the download of the victim's cell phone, it is noted there are multiple videos stored on the phone showing the victim and Maris engaged in sexual intercourse. One of the videos shows Maris from behind and she is wearing get Ready for This, a light yellow sweatshirt that has quote Jesus Loves You in large letters on the back of the shirt. Also, the victim's cell phone shows call and text interaction between Mare's cell phone and the victim's cell phone on the social app Snapchat.

25:57 After interviewing multiple students in the case, it has been said that multiple male students any names one, two, three, four of them have also received inappropriate videos, photographs, and messages from Maris. These mentioned students have also received and shared video of the victim and Marius having sexual intercourse. For the above reasons, the effeiate has probable cause to get a search warrant basically, so that is search warrant number one, and then another search warrant comes back and it basically restates the same thing, but it adds to it, it says. On May seventh of twenty twenty six, it was learned that Marius's cousin, I'm not going to name that person, had a cell phone that had once recently belonged to Maris. This cousin was using the cell phone currently and her mother had put that phone on her plan. Recently, Maris's mother have been reaching out to the cousin's mother, So basically, Marius's mother was reaching out to her sister to get that phone returned. But the cousin's mother, the sister of Marius's mother, she wanted to turn that phone over to the Sheriff's office. She was afraid any evidence would be destroyed if the phone was returned to Marius's mother, which is probably pretty good thinking there, And it goes on to say also on May seventh of twenty twenty six, it was learned another student we'll call him Student two,

27:30 had also received new photographs of Miss Nichols and had inappropriate conversation with Miss Nichols. On May eleventh of twenty twenty six, another victim, we'll call him Victim three, came forward to allege he had also had sex with Maris at a golf course in Saint Andrew's Golf Community inside Douglas County. This was on May second that he had sex with her, and this victim number three also claims there are messages between him and Mariss that took place on Snapchat. Throughout the investigation, it has been said repeatedly on social media apps that the victims in this case were blackmailing Mayriss by threatening to expose our OnlyFans account in return for good grades in her class. During the course of the investigation, multiple interviews had been conducted with individuals associated with Marius. It had been learned that Marius had been admitted to Tanner Facilities due to behavior issues possible alcoholism and mental health issues believed to be associated with sexual deviant behavior on at least two separate occasions.

28:38 And that's huge. You got a teacher who had been admitted apparently to a mental hospital for sexually deviant behavior prior to any of this coming out. Right at this time, it is unknown the dates and durations of these visits. A the has probably calls to believe medical records pertaining to the visits their valuable information for the furtherance of the case, and so that's what they were seeking here. So we'll move on and I've got several arrest warrants. Those were search warrants. These are arrest warrants, and we're going to take these in order. The first one says between the dates of January first at twelve am and April thirtieth at twelve am, said accused in the accused as obviously Marius did commit the offense of grooming a minor for sexual offense by knowingly engaging in a pattern of conduct or communication through a third party, meaning through the use of electronic devices like a cell phone. And it says did show naked pictures and videos of herself to a victim, and that victim, who is female in this case, y'all, that victim and Maris the teacher watched fifty shades of gray movies and talked about different types of ltorus. Oh my. And it gets even more disturbing with affidavit for rest number two, where it says that

30:08 female victim was a child under sixteen years of age and that Marius did show new photographs of herself naked and videos of her in the shower with her husband, showing only herself fully naked to the victim child. Another warrant says between the dates of April twentieth and May fifth of twenty twenty six. A male victim did engage in sexual conduct with Maris Nichols and did send new pictures of herself, meaning Maris Nichols to this victim who is a student in her fourth period class at Alexander High School. Another warrant says, this one goes from April twentieth to May fifth. Maris Nichols did send new pictures of herself and live videos live video of herself masturbating with sex toys to another male victim who is a student at Alexander High School. Another arrest warrant comes up, this one between April twentieth, twenty twenty six and May fifth of twenty twenty six, and it says mays Nichols did send new pictures of herself in live videos of herself masturbating with sex toys. Two and this is another male victim who is a student in her third period class at Alexander High School. Goes on to another arrest warrant, Maris Nichols did send messages to yet another male victim telling him she liked him, what sexual acts she wanted

31:42 him to do to her, and get this, how she likes to be choked, screamed at, slapped, and whipped during sexual encounters. Telling that to a high school student, y'all. Another affidavit warrant for arrest saying that she committed the active child molestation on four twenty three, twenty twenty six and five five of twenty twenty six with a male victim under the age of sixteen years old, says Maris Nichols did send videos and also video chats of herself masturbating with a sex toy to that victim so sick. Yet another arrest warrant four twenty three of twenty twenty six.

32:26 This incident allegedly occurred. It said Maris Nichols, who is a teacher at Alexander High School, did engage with sexual intercourse in a closet that is shared between her classroom and another classroom, so you could opened that closet from both sides. Imagine if another teacher would have opened that with a victim I'm not going to say his name who is a student at nichols third period class. Yet another warrant says Maris Nichols did send messages to a victim telling him she liked him, what sexual acts she wanted him to do to her, and how she like to be choked, screened at, slapped, and wept. So this is not the same student. She said this to two different students. Yet another warrant says Maris Nichols did send messages to a victim telling him she liked him, she wanted to be choked. All the shit that are just Reggie basically the same thing. So that's three students she told the same story too. Then on May second, this incident allegedly occurred Mayris Nichols, who was a teacher at Alexander High School, did engage in sexual intercourse and at two thousand and six Hummer H two black in color at the end of a driveway which I'm assuming was her driveway, but I'm not sure about that, with a victim who is a student in her third period class.

33:45 Yet another warrant comes out, this one the incident occurred May third, says Mars Nichols did engage with sexual intercourse with yet another victim who is a student at Alexander High School at St. Andrews Golf Club in the backseat of his truck. So all this comes out y'all, And the arrest, of course comes, and that is on May eighth of twenty twenty six, Nichols gets taken into custody. She's charged with two counts of improper sexual contact by a person with supervisory or disciplinary authority. She gets booked into the Douglas County Jail, and she's released later that same day after posting. By now, at that stage, the case involved allegations related to just one student, but that investigation was expanding. Obviously, listen to what I just reagie.

34:42 Less than two weeks later, on around May twentieth of twenty twenty six, Nichols was arrested again. Now, the second arrest added a significant number of new charges. Prosecutors filed additional counts that brought the total felonies to thirteen. Now. The new charges included two counts of child molestation, four counts of improper sexual contact by an employee, four counts of grooming a minor for a sexual offense, and one count of tampering with evidence. And that second arrest reflected the rapid growth of this investigation. By that point, authorities that identified additional victims. I just red you all of that more digital evidence as well, and the bond amount was also increased. Reports indicate Nichols did post a seventy four thousand dollars bond following that second arrest. Now, as part of those release conditions, Nichols was placed under strict restrictions electronic monitoring. She was prohibited from getting on the Internet or of course, getting on social media applications. She was ordered to have no contact with miners except their own young child, and requirements for a psycho sexual evaluation.

36:01 She was also restricted in her movements. She only had specific zones that she could travel to. If she had to go outside those zones, she had to get approval first. Now Prosecutors would later allege that Nichols violated these conditions repeatedly and emotion filed in June of twenty twenty six, They claimed she committed dozens of violations while under electronic monitoring. One report cited as many as eighty five freaking violations y'all over a twenty seven day period, including curfew breaches, zone inclusion violations tracked by that monitoring company that was tracking her. Prosecutors argued those violations showed she couldn't be trusted to file a court orders. I couldn't agree with that more, and they asked a judge to completely revoke her bond and return her to jail while awaiting trial.

36:56 And the motion to revoke that bond would highlight concerns not only about the movement violations that she was having, but also the original restrictions on internet and social media. Given that these alleged crimes y'all involved extensive digital communication, any violation of those conditions were viewed particularly serious by prosecutors because you don't want her getting online and talking to these students and talking them out of, you know, rolling over to the police. Now, as of the time we are recording this episode, and it's July one when I'm recording this, the case remains active. Nichols hasn't gone to trial yet. She continues to face a full list of felony charges. The investigation into the digital evidence, including OnlyFans related claims, that's ongoing, and no trial date has been publicly confirmed as of this recording. But what does this case tell us well, First and foremost, it reminds us that bad teachers don't always fit the stereotype of older, long term employees with a hidden pass. As a matter of fact, quite the contrary, these young teachers are freaking wilding out. Maris Nichols was only twenty five years old.

38:19 Remember that she was relatively new to the profession. She was someone who, on paper, should have been in the early hopeful stage of her career, building up, career up. She's got a young kid and a husband. And that's what makes this case particularly disturbing for me. It shows that agent and experience do not automatically protect stenants. In fact, a young staff member who is close in age to the students can sometimes create a false sense of peer level connection. Right, We've talked about that today, and that makes grooming easier. And second, the case highlights the dangers of blurred boundaries and schools, especially in athletics when a teacher also works closely with student athletes on a field. Now, lastly, this case raises important questions about oversight and accountability in our schools. How do we better protect students from adults in positions of power. How do we ensure that young teachers receive proper training on professional boundaries. Now, I don't think training plays a huge role. I think explaining what boundaries are between students and teachers is important, But I think a freaking teacher has enough common sense to know you're not supposed to screw a student.
