Our Lady of the Rosary:
A Prayer That Still Speaks to Us
Dear Friends,
October has long been a special month for Catholics because it is dedicated in a particular way to the Holy Rosary.
This week, as we celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, I find myself thinking about both the remarkable history of this devotion and its enduring place in the life of the Church.
The story takes us back to the 16th century, when Europe faced the threat of Ottoman expansion. In 1571, a Christian fleet faced a much larger Ottoman force at the Battle of Lepanto. Pope St. Pius V called upon Catholics throughout Europe to pray the Rosary for the Church and for the Christian forces.
On October 7, the Christian fleet achieved a stunning victory.
The Pope attributed the victory to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary and established a feast in her honor. Over time, that celebration became the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary.
But the story of the Rosary is not simply about a battle that happened more than 450 years ago.
It is about what happens when people turn to God in prayer.
The Rosary has been prayed by generations of Catholics in moments of joy, fear, uncertainty, suffering and thanksgiving. It has been prayed in churches and homes, in hospitals and at bedsides, on battlefields and during times of personal crisis.
And perhaps most importantly, it continues to change hearts.
Most of us probably have a story about prayer.
Perhaps you prayed for someone you love and witnessed an unexpected blessing. Perhaps you asked for something very specific and received an answer in a way you never expected. Or perhaps nothing around you changed—but something changed within you.
That last possibility is one of the great gifts of the Rosary.
When we pray the Rosary, we don't simply repeat prayers. We accompany Mary as we contemplate the life, death and Resurrection of her Son. Through those mysteries, we are invited to see our own lives differently.
This is why the Rosary remains so powerful after all these centuries.
As we continue our journey together at Carolina Catholic, I would love to hear from you:
Have you ever experienced something extraordinary after praying the Rosary—an answered prayer, an unexpected blessing, or perhaps a change in your heart? What happened?
Your story may be exactly what someone else needs to hear.
Please share it with us. Our Catholic faith is strengthened when we share not only what we believe, but also how God has touched our lives.
May Our Lady of the Rosary intercede for each of us and bring us ever closer to her Son, Jesus Christ.
God bless you,
