How a Lunch in Houston Sparked My Art Career
🎨 Curator Talk Tuesdays: Episode 6 – My Art Journey: How I Got Involved in the Art World
Every curator has a story. Mine began with a question from my friend Ghulam Fareed on LinkedIn: "How did you get into the art world?" Today, I’m sharing that journey.
🖼️ My First Encounter with Black Art
During a trip to Houston, I decided to start collecting original Black art. While dining at The Breakfast Klub, I was captivated by the vibrant artwork adorning the walls. Intrigued, I inquired about the artist and was introduced to Linda Simien Kelly, a self-taught abstract expressionist known for highlighting Black identity and cultural solidarity. Meeting Linda the next day, I returned home with my first piece of art, marking the beginning of my collection.
✨ The Pivotal Moment Leading to Curation
After over four years of collecting, I sought advice from experienced collectors about my next steps. They suggested curating salon shows, which resonated with my passion for planning and creating. This realization ignited my journey into curation.
🖤 Passion for Elevating Black Artists
The art world often underrepresents Black artists. My mission is to change that by providing increased visibility, exposure, and patronage. Creating spaces for diverse voices is essential for a richer, more inclusive cultural landscape.
