The Acolyte Episode 3 - Sins of the Jedi

Joe Mitchell back at it again with another dive into the wild world of Star Wars, and boy do I have some thoughts on the latest episode of The Acolyte. Buckle up, because we're in for a bumpy ride. Spoilers ahead. Episode three, titled Destiny, has been stirring up all sorts of drama in the Star Wars fandom. Some folks are even calling it the worst thing to happen to the franchise since Jar Jar Binks. But is it really that bad? Let's break it down. First off, we get a flashback to the origin story of our twin protagonists, Osha and May, played by the talented Amandla Stenberg. Turns out they were raised in a coven of Space, which is on the planet Brendoc, who have a whole different take on the Force. They call it the Thread and seem to think it's more of a cosmic string you can tug on than a power you can control. It's a cool concept, but apparently it's got some fans Jedi robes in a twist.

1:03 Now, the idea of different force based religions isn't exactly new in Star Wars, but the Acolyte is the first time we've seen it in live action, and boy are these witches bringing the drama. We find out that the twins were apparently conceived by the Force itself, just like a certain chosen one we all know and love. But wait, there's more. It seems like the twins might have been the result of some kind of magical experiment by mother Aniseya played by the fierce Jodi Turner Smith ce the Jedi who show up to test the twins force sensitivity and end up causing all sorts of trouble. Osha wants to join the Space Monks, while May is all about staying with her witchy fam. The Jedi are giving off some seriously sketchy vibes, insisting they have the right to take the kids away from their home. They even hand Osha a lightsaber like it's a toy and not a deadly weapon. Not cool, Jedi, not cool. But here's where things get really wild. The entire coven seems to die in a fire that may start ard by accident or did they It's clear there's more to this story than meets the Eye, But we'll have to wait and see how it all plays out. Now, let's address the bantha in the room, the backlash. Some fans are accusing the Acolyte of breaking Star Wars cannon and making Anakin Skywalker less special. Others are mad about how the Jedi are being portrayed as maybe not so perfect. And then there are the anti woke folks who seem to have a problem with the show's diverse cast in LGBTQ themes. But here's the thing. My fellow Star Wars nerds George Lucas himself introduced the idea of the Jedi being flawed and the Force

2:37 being more than just a simple good verse evil thing in the prequels. And as for the Immaculate Force conception, well, Palpatine did mention that whole Darth plaguis creating life thing, didn't he. Look I get it. Change can be scary, especially when it comes to something we love as much as Star Wars. But maybe, just maybe the Acolyte is trying to do something new and interesting with the franchise. Maybe it's okay to question the status quo and explore different perspectives on the Force. Or maybe it's just a hot mess of a show that's breaking Star Wars forever. Who knows.
