House of the Dragon Season 2 Episode 5 - Draggin' On: House of the Dragon's Snooze-Fest

Today we're diving into episode five of House of the Dragons second season, and boy, oh boy, was this one a slog. Now. Don't get me wrong, I love me some Westeros. I've been invested in this world since Game of Thrones first hit our screens, but this episode it felt like watching paint dry on dragon scales. Let's start with the action, and I use that term loosely. Most of this episode was just people talking in rooms, and not even exciting talking. We've got Rania on Dragonstone, surrounded by her council, basically just rehashing plans we've already heard. I get it, war strategy is important, but do we need to see every single meeting. Then we've got Damon over at Heronhall doing well, not much of anything. Matt Smith is a fantastic actor, but even he can't make chopping Wood interesting for more than a few seconds. And those weird dream sequences with his mother. I'm all for exploring a character, Psyche, but this felt more like filler than anything. Substantial. Speaking of Piller, let's talk about Corlis on drift Mark.

1:15 I love me some Steve Tussan, but watching him mope around for half the episode was about as exciting as watching seaweed grow. I get it, he's grieving, but this is a show about dragons and war. Pick up the pace, Sea Snake now. I will say there were a few moments that piqued my interest. Emon taking control in King's Landing could be interesting if they actually do something with it, and Jacrres treating with the phrase that's some classic wester Roast politicking right there. But these bright spots were few and far between. And can we talk about the pacing? This episode felt like it was moving slower than a three legged dire wolf. We're five episodes into the season and it feels like we've barely moved the plot forward. Where's the dragon action? Where are the big game changing moments at this point and Game of Thrones we'd have had at least three major character deaths in a battle or two.

2:05 I hate to say it, but it feels like House of the Dragon is suffering from serious second season slump. They've got all these great actors in this rich world to play with, but they're not doing anything exciting with it. It's all set up and no payoff. Even the visuals, which are usually a highlight, felt lackluster this episode. How many times can we see the same shots of Dragonstone or the Red Keep before it gets old? And Heron Hall, which should be this creepy, imposing fortress, just looks like any old castle with some mood lighting. Now, I know some folks might say, but Joe, it's all building to something big, and maybe it is. But here's the thing. We shouldn't have to sit through boring episodes just for the promise of excitement later. Each episode should be engaging in its own right. Remember when Damon sang to that old dragon last season. That was weird, but at least it was interesting. This episode didn't have a single moment that made me sit up and take notice. It was just the I will say. The acting is still top notch. Emma Darcy continues to kill it as Raniera, even if she's not given much to do, and Olivia Cook as Allison. She can convey more with a single look than some actors can with a whole monologue. It's just a shame they're not given material worthy of their talents. Look, I'm not saying every episode needs to be NonStop action. I appreciate character development and world building as much as the next guy, but there's a difference between slow burned storytelling and just being slow.

3:30 This episode unfortunately fell into the latter category. I'm worried, folks. We're more than halfway through the season and it feels like we're still in setup mode. Are they saving all the good stuff for the last few episodes, and if so, is that really the best way to structure a season. Don't get me wrong, I'm still going to watch. I'm invested in this world, in these characters, but my enthusiasm is waning. I find myself checking my phone during episodes, something I never did during the height of Game of Thrones, and that's not a good sign. So what do you think, fellow basement dwellers?
