Have you ever wished you had been able to make a career out of your passion?
My guest John Bailey is a writer, broadcaster and conservationist who's life and career has been built around his two passions fishing and teaching.
Our conversation spans adventures in Mongolia and Greenland, drunken pilots and plane crashes, his love of nature and the countryside to the emotional challenges of his childhood and how that affected him in his life and what he has learned from it.
"I could never really relax because I was waiting for any moments of calm or happiness to be snatched away"
Even if you have never fished or ever planned to there is much to learn from John's life experiences, his teaching and guiding having brought him great insight into people and the world we live in.
Of course if you are into fishing there is much to listen to including his pioneering trips to remote fishing destinations, growing up as a fisherman alongside John Wilson his views on the environmental challenges our rivers and lakes face and his latest project working with Paul Whitehouse and Bob Mortimer on the BAFTA nominated BBC2 series Mortimer and Whitehouse Gone Fishing.
We talk about the companionship and friendship which is at the heart of fishing and is the central theme of the TV series and how it can be a great antidote to the stresses of modern life and John reflects how this kind of therapy is often underestimated in its powerful effect on wellbeing.
As John says "We only have one precious life, wasting it is not an option"
