The Other Side of 40 is a dedicated space to women who have made positive changes in their lives after the age of 40. Join host, April Grant, as she highlights women to help you find inspiration and support as you start the next chapter of your life.

Today we are joined by Dr. Jameson Mercier, licensed clinical social worker, who specializes in relationship therapy. He is here to share his perspective, not on the gossipy side of the Jada and Will saga, but rather on the dynamic between married couples.

Episode Notes

Marriage is normally a private thing, but a couple as famous as Jada and Will are going through the ups and downs of their marriage in a very public way. Dr. Mercier helps to walk us through the dynamics of long-term relationships. When couples are together for a long time, people grow, and sometimes this means needs, wants, and desires change. What happens when that changes? What do you do? Do you seek comfort outside? Do you avoid the pitfalls?

Dr. Mercier talks to us about the Relationship System—the dynamics of a relationship. There are multiple systems that function during a relationship and when one aspect shifts, the dynamics of all the systems can be thrown out of alignment. Take a deep breath. Dr. Mercier gives you permission to not avoid the pitfalls of relationship to have a best friend other than your partner, and to make mistakes in your relationship in order to keep the relationship real and true. Listen in to hear some sound analysis and get tips on how to operate and adjust to keep your relationship systems in sound operation.

Tune in to hear Dr. Mercier and April have a real heart to heart about the journey of marriage.
