Let’s face it, from day one Director Zach Cregger was up against the ropes with this adaptation.
After six Milla Jovovich films (which I enjoy to varying degrees) and 2021’s “Welcome to Raccoon City” what was the worst that could really happen?
Zach Cregger sets a new bar for video game adaptations with his iteration of Resident Evil. A non-stop visceral experience loaded with kinetic energy. The biggest surprise? A healthy dose of well earned humor. Nasty creature work, inventive violence and a tight runtime make this a can’t miss movie for spooky season.
The real MVP? Austin Abrams, hands down. He channels some serious Bruce Campbell energy as the film reaches its climax. His performance holds the film together in a way we haven’t seen with previous Horror protagonists. Abrams is explosive in a way we Horror junkies haven’t seen in a very long time.
At a muscular 97 minutes Cregger gives us his most commercial and crowd pleasing movie. Fans of the Resident Evil games will be surprised and general audiences will be enamored with the film.
You don’t need a controller for this iteration of Resident Evil, just some popcorn and nerves of steel. This is easily one of the best genre films of 2026 and the best Horror comedy since “Shaun of the Dead”.
