303 - Dr. Van H. Truong - Educator

Vân H. Truong, EdD is a student-centered educator specializing in distributive leadership. Dr. Truong has over twenty years of experience increasing student achievement and closing opportunity gaps through students, educators and families/partners. She was most recently Portland Public Schools' Interim Assistant Superintendent.

Over the course of her career, Dr. Truong worked tirelessly to close linguistic, racial and class achievement gaps while providing advanced learning opportunities for high achieving students. She understands the importance of working across various constituencies to develop a synergistic partnership focused on the whole system. This requires the ability to work across race, culture, language, class, and socioeconomic status in order to bring the best thinkers and movers together.

Dr. Truong started her career at Portland Public Schools (PPS) as a secretary, then moved on to teaching French, art, and ESL. Since then, she has been Vice Principal at Franklin High School, Principal at Mt. Tabor Middle School, Assistant Director of Secondary Instruction, Senior Director of English as Second Language Program, and Executive Director of Teaching and Learning at PPS.

During her tenure, PPS achieved its highest graduation rate in more than 15 years. PPS is a PK-12 urban school district in Portland, Oregon that serves more than 49,000 students in 78 schools, making it one of the largest school districts in the Pacific Northwest.
