Today, Rich Lockwood of Motor City Gas joins the show. Following a career in marketing and advertising, Rich needed a change. In 2015 he turned his hobby of home brewing and turned it in to a business. He wanted a hometown feel, and Motor City Gas came to downtown Royal Oak.
The early days were lean, no cash register (just a sock drawer) and only one whiskey available. Now, Motor City Gas has flights, craft cocktails, and was named one of the nation's 10 best whiskey bars by Yelp. And their limited edition bourbon, "Bumper Bender," made from Mexican purple corn, won first prize at the second largest craft spirits competition in the US.
Aside from a few specialty barrels, though, most of the alcohol is produced locally. Rich and his team own and operate a sustainable farm in Ann Arbor, where they are getting into regenerative farming. That's where their grains come from. Locally sourced ingredients and sustainability are important to the Motor City Gas business model. In fact, Rich and Lisa barely scratch the surface on the topic of farms and gardening- they could go on for days.
Rich and his team just worked with the folks at Flow Video to produce a documentary on MCG, "From Dirt to Bottle," which you can view here. https://vimeo.com/785815144
