EP 102: Writing About Sexuality (4): Joel's Evolution

EP 102: Writing About Sexuality (4): Joel's Evolution

This is the second episode with @tete.depunk for this #christmas night! Listen to the whole podcast here! We will also be posting this to our usual platforms later tonight and tomorrow.

In this episode, we talk about how Joel’s sexuality evolved, how he compares to Philip Roth’s characters like Portnoy, Nathan, and Henry, and Tete’s characters, Andrei and Tatusuya.

Highlights:

-with Joel, I wanted to go against the tendency of some authors to either over-idealize male sexuality or characterize it as overly threatening.

-Joel’s an introverted seducer, while Andrei is an extroverted one

-Joel’s biggest flaw is his self-isolation and feeling that everything is pointless. He is also extremely proud of how skeptical he is compared to everyone else.

-Joel likes slow lead-ups to sexual encounters with Malka and he likes to observe all of her reactions. He is powered by empathy and love towards her and wants to make her feel comfortable. This is why his and Malka’s relationship is so healthy.
