Before I continue with this podcast, I just want to make something clear. I am saddened every day by the number of deaths which this pandemic is causing. I have to remind myself every day that these numbers are not just numbers - they are people. People's family, mothers, father children, relations. I do consider there is a danger that we are becoming desensitised to the numbers of deaths which I feel is heartbreaking. When I am saying that I want to think of positives of the lockdown it is not my intention to forget or be oblivious to the number of people who have lost their lives of the families they leave behind. When I am talking in this episode about the benefits of lockdown, I wanted to make it clear from the onset, that this title is not trying to make this whole pandemic appear to be positive. It is purely how I am surviving with my own mental health. My thoughts and love go out to everyone who has lost someone during the pandemic.

Hello everyone and welcome to the inwils interval

In this months interval, I want to talk about the benefits of lockdown

<-----Music----->

If you watch my Twitch channel, and serious if you don't then come and say hi,  you will be aware that I'm really pushing the 'stay positive' theme at the moment. Not only was my last episode of inwils interval focused on the stay positive theme, but  I am currently putting some snazzy designs onto mugs and stickers to sell them on my merch store (links in the show note!). We  (the fantastic in-crowd community and myself) try to make the channel a haven. A place where we can forget what is happening in the world and in our lives, and share some positive chat and well, smiles.

Being in lockdown again means that I am spending a lot of time, in my flat alone... and I was starting to see everything in a very negative light. You were probably all feeling like I was. Not being able to stick to my usual routine, no trips to the local coffee shop, no meeting people face to face at work not even being able to have a random look around the shops for new clothes. Definitely, the lockdown blues were hitting me big time and I was struggling to find a suitable routine which satisfied me and I was laying the blame firmly at the door of lockdown.

When we look back at events within our lives we tend to remember the extremes. The events that really made us happy or laugh and those which really made us sad, scared or upset. Our memories are, and I know this sounds strange, made up of nerve connections in our brain (Sorry I had to pause there the first time of recording before I have written Brian in the script and actually said - nerve connections in out brian - strange indeed!). These synapse connections strengthen the more we relive the memory. Of course, we have a lot of these connections in our brain so only the extremes are stored and every time we relive the memory and strengthen the memory we filter it down to the bare essentials. Which is the emotions associated with it.  Negative memories can have stronger emotions associated with them and so these become a deeper and deeper memory as we relive them. Although they are currently memories, we are currently reliving the lockdown events and memories and these are being strengthened.

I'm reading a lot about positivity, mainly Jon Gordon's writings, and one of the PDFs I have found on the internet was a document titled - 10 things to do instead of complaining. This got me thinking. Maybe I need to look at the lockdown through a different lens. Rather than the aforementioned lens focusing on the negative, why don't shift the focal point to focus on the positive and make some positive memories of the lockdown? And so, with my fingers dancing over the keyboard, I wrote this episode to share with you three things which I have done which I would not have done if the lockdown had not had happened.

  1. Running! You have probably heard enough of this by now. As my lockdown weight increased, I decided that I had to do something to try and shift the weight. I was also finding that I was doing very little exercise since I was spending most of my time sat at the computer either working from home or streaming. So I actually started and completed the NHS couch to 5k app. Because of this, I now run roughly 5k three times a week. I've shifted the lockdown weight but most importantly my resting heart rate has dropped and I actually feel much more positive when I've been for my run.

  2. More Streaming! Before lockdown, I was a bit of a Costa fanatic! (Other coffee shops are available). This had definitely become a routine. I did enjoy it but now that I haven't been able to attend I have started to stream more. I really love streaming and it has been fantastic to have time to play new games and to actually start to increase my knowledge of the games! On a side note, I am definitely saving money as well! Will I go back once lockdown is released? Well probably, but I'm going to keep it balanced and keep my streaming going!

  3. Working on staying positive! I know this might seem a poor positive, actually becoming more positive, but I do feel that if it wasn't for the lockdown I would not have started this journey. We always have to have the negatives to see the positives and I think the negative of the lockdown as supported me to start focusing more on the actual positive. Its a really nice feeling when I am able to switch my mindset as things happen. If anything sometimes it just makes me smile and, as we all know, smiling always makes you feel much better.

So, why not try and switch your mindset and start looking at the positives things which you have experienced due to the lockdown. And, if you are sat there listening to this thinking that there has been only negatives, then why not start to make some memories and start the process.

As I mentioned at the start of this episode, my thoughts and love goes out to everyone who has lost someone during this pandemic and let's all stay safe, cover our faces and make space so that this deadly virus can be stopped sooner rather than later.

I Hope you enjoy this inwils interval, don’t forget to subscribe and come back next month until then stay positive!
