There's A New Sheriff In Town
In our world, generational talents in sports are bred every so many years. Players come and go like thieves in the night; but for Victor Wembanyama, the mania is here. He’s a rare combination of size, athleticism, and overall, a point guard in a center’s body. Being the number one pick in this summer’s NBA draft has a lot of expectations.
When he’s the biggest prospect since LeBron James, it becomes a trend of can he be this generational talent and face of the NBA? Victor is embracing his journey with grace.
Standing 7’4", Victor will have plenty of impact on both sides of the ball. With his skill sets, Wemby will make life difficult for players to score and defend him. As we witnessed against the Phoenix Suns a few nights ago, he took over and left no doubt he is him as the kids say. 38 points to go along with 10 rebounds, he was doggone unstoppable late in the fourth quarter. Stage wasn’t too big or moment too high, Wemby flexed muscles and the Spurs were able to get the win over Phoenix. Great as Kevin Durant was, even he looked small standing next to
Wemby.
For Wemby to become a great player, work ethics and knowing his role is the culture in San Antonio. Head coach Gregg Popovich will get the most out of his superstar player. He’s going to have bumps and bruises, but he’ll adjust to the physical contact. Watching him run in stride is simply astonishing and poised. A few steps and he’s at the rim with a dunk or layup. Slender built, he will have to add muscle to stay healthy. Nutrition and sports science will become his best friends.
The best defender on opposing teams will have to build walls around him to have a chance. There’s no remote way in beating him unless an off night occurs. Wemby will be a matchup nightmare to overcome for teams to win. Playing outside in is his overall game in general; he’ll figure out to distribute the basketball and another aspect of his game will fly under the radar.
In a perfect world, Victor has the potential to be passed the torch. With superstars Jayson Tatum, Ja Morant, LaMelo Ball, Luka Doncic, Giannis Antetokounmpo, it’s going to be tough in getting the torch. There are no shortcuts to greatness; but Wemby checks some of the boxes. Being in a small market like San Antonio is the only knack working against him. Not a lot of exposure, but that will arrive sooner than expected.
Head coach Gregg Popovich is under contract for the next few seasons. How long will he coach until the day arrives for Pop to retire? Drafting Victor gave Coach Pop a new hope of getting back to the postseason. One of the more underappreciated head coaches in league history, Coach Pop is looking to recapture what he once had in former Spurs teams. The day will come, and he will look for his replacement: Las Vegas Aces head coach Becky Hammon, a former assistant on his staff and knows basketball could have the keys handed to her. If the opportunity presents itself, I believe Becky would maximize a once in a lifetime and make herstory by being the first female head basketball coach. It would furthermore cement her legacy in both NBA and WNBA as a player and winning head coach. This would be a great story and having the mantle passed to her from Pop, Victor would likely expand his basketball portfolio.
Can Victor become the best player in his draft class over Scoot Henderson and Brandon Miller? Yes for several reasons:
1. San Antonio is arguably one of the best organizations in basketball. Great front office and culture to develop Wemby.
2. International players have stellar success and enshrine their legacies early in San Antonio.
3. Coach Gregg Popovich is the ideal man to get the most out of his skillsets.
4. If Becky Hammon is named head coach in the foreseeable future, there’s going to be more fans around the globe paying attention to Wemby and Becky.
I do believe he’s going to be 2024 “Rookie of The Year” without any doubt. His impact on both sides of the basketball will be his to win. Accomplish the smaller accolades early on and build to win league MVP over guys like Nikola Jokic, Joel Embiid, Jayson Tatum, Ja Morant, Luka Doncic, Devin Booker, and LaMelo Ball. It would be a landslide vote and hopefully capture his first NBA championship. Long as he can stay healthy and continue to evolve his game, it would be in peak form to become the best player in the league. All the makings of a great player and beyond for Victor Wembanyama.
He will outshine Scoot Henderson, Brandon Miller, and his peers in the 2023 NBA Draft. For now, Wemby’s rookie campaign is underway with a big bang. Greater days are on the horizons in West Texas; their next superstar has arrived and will be around several years. Spurs fans, continue to show up and love Wemby. It’s been a few
seasons of bottom feeding. This is the guy who’ll lead you back in winning an NBA Championship.
Stai tuned…
