"The Kickstart of Jaxson Dart"
What happens when a young talented rookie waits for his moment to
showcase his talent? In this case, it was what the New York Giants
needed to revive their season. First round pick Jaxson Dart lived up and
gave Giants fans some spark on Sunday afternoon. For the first time in
a while, MetLife Stadium sounded like a home advantage.
With all the noise surrounding head coach Brian Daboll's potential exit,
Dart led New York to a 21-18 win over the Los Angeles Chargers.
Scoring on the opening driver built confidence on both sides; while fans
cheered seeing their team make this move before the season slipped
away. It was a topic of discussion if Dart could play well enough to keep
this team competitive.
The score isn't a tall tale of what happened: Dart's swagger and poise
stood out while playing smart enough to avoid crucial mistakes. Los
Angeles flying to the west coast for a 1PM Eastern time zone kickoff
didn't bode well. Having the number four defense looked miserable in
part of Dart's playmaking abilities. It was a sigh of relief to see the points
on a scoreboard.
In a turning point, second year receiver Malik Nabers threw his body in
making a catch; only to blow his knee out in the process. Silence across
the stadium; as fans felt jaded and emotional. You never want to see a
player leave on a medical cart. It was a freak injury and nothing can
take back what happened. Dart kept his poise and on the main thing
which was winning a football game.
When the Giants have a defense with athletic guys up front, you can't
escape it. Not to mention, four first round picks and what fans have
been waiting to celebrate. Even defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence
nearly had a "thick six" off Justin Herbert. Even as fans celebrated, it
was what they needed to keep showing up and supporting their beloved
Giants. Dart gave them new life and excitement for this mild fall Sunday
afternoon.
Now, Daboll can't go back to veteran Russell Wilson; which would be a
mistake and destroy Dart's confidence. This team was ready to play and
believed in their rookie quarterback. They couldn't do that with Wilson in
part of him being somewhat of a disconnect. There's no guaranteed
Wilson remains on this roster; who could be traded over the next few
weeks.
Some players are built for New York sports, while others shy away from
the bright lights. Jaxson Dart has given the fans new excitement and
juiced up the locker room with a new vibe. A first start and win builds
continuity among players. Rather the veteran backups like it or not, let
Dart have his moment. You too were in the same spot when your career
started. For Daboll, his job is safe for now if he can orchestrate some
wins while keeping afloat for a potential playoff spot. It's late September
and getting a win before October is something to build off.
