"NBA on NBC: Back Home Where It Belongs"
If you grew up in the 1990s, basketball was your escape from reality.
Basketball courts were full with kids wanting to emulate Michael Jordan,
Reggie Miller, Kobe Bryant and Allen Iverson. A lot of great players who
gave youth dreams to chase. When it was time to go inside and chill
out, Sundays were for primetime basketball games. Usually a double-
header, depending the schedule.
When it was announced NBC/Peacock were getting the NBA back, fans
cheered and anticipated what was going to be a blast from the past.
Seeing the the peacock colored wings, then... "Roundball Rock" by
John Tesh followed. NBA on NBC returned twenty-three years later
since the last Finals series was aired in 2002. Which would've been the
third Los Angeles Lakers championship during the Shaq/Kobe
Hollywood Lakers three peat.
The nostalgia returned bigger, bolder and revived NBA fans alike. It was
long overdue and boy did NBC/Peacock get it right. A new studio,
panelists and most importantly: the man and mystique who this
generation didn't see play a single game during his heyday: Michael
Jordan's anticipated debut as a contributor. That alone was special and
we'll have it all season. Just his mere presence alone had fans
wondering what his role would be.
We were introduced to "MJ: Insights to Excellence," as he sat down
with Mike Tirico and talking about his motivation to pay it forward.
Passing messages of success to current players. But... There was one
part of this short interview which made fans feel old: when Jordan said
he wishes he could take a magic pill and suit up to play had all of us
screaming "don't we all MJ!" The competitor within hasn't left and sure
enough you could tell in his voice.
As we sat for what unraveled, reigning NBA champion Oklahoma City
Thunder raised their banner and hosted Kevin Durant's new look
Houston Rockets. Down to the wire in double overtime, OKC prevailed.
In the main event everyone was looking forward to: Steph Curry's
Warriors versus LeBron James' Lakers. With James missing his first
opening night game of his career, Curry reminded us why he's the
baddest man in basketball.
All the hype, prompt and circumstance with Curry and James gracing
the court in Los Angeles. Luka Doncic slimmed down and gave all he
could in defeat as Golden State defeated Los Angeles. Even with the
new season underway, it would be even bittersweet to have legendary
broadcaster Marv Albert, who's seen a lot of great moments in NBA
history. Just hearing his voice and the energy he brought would be icing
on the cake for NBC. He may be retired, but if the right game is
available, NBA fans would truly be overjoyed.
