"Los Angeles Clippers: A Damning Investigation"
What happens when you attempt to apply shady business deals with
kickstart companies and superstar players? Nobody has to know right?
Sign endorsement deals and take the money without being seen? This
is the latest NBA offseason news which has everyone talking.
Clippers owner Steve Ballmer finds himself in a shady scandal
surrounding a company by the name of Aspiration. In the event of it all,
Ballmer and Los Angeles Clippers are under investigation by the NBA;
which a report came out about forward Kawhi Leonard accepting a $28
million dollar endorsement deal from Aspiration.
Now, Leonard has been the subject of criticism since arriving in Los
Angeles during 2020. How did we get here you ask? Allow me to further
explain the many roles involved. Ballmer's involvement to circumvent
the salary cap is illegal. He was an investor and denied any
"knowledge" of this lucrative deal or pulling the strings to strike a deal. If
you've been living under a rock of stale concrete, this isn't the first time
he's done this.
A digital banking company with environmentally aspects, Aspiration was
a traditional bank which included savings accounts, debit cards with
cash back from businesses who were doing the right thing. And of
course, planting a tree with every purchase. Sounds legit right? Here's
the turning point of this investigation.
Ballmer's invested $50 million into the company through his own
personal LLC in September 2021. Known for being the richest owners in
sports, everyone thought nothing of it. In the process of building the
Intuit Dome, a deal was made worth $300 million dollars via the Clippers
and Aspiration.
Which brings us to Kawhi Leonard's role in the scandal. Leonard agreed
to a four year twenty-eight million dollar endorsement deal from
Aspiration through his LLC KL2 Aspire in 2022; following his contract
extension with the Clippers. Seven extra million dollars to go with a $50
million dollars playing basketball.
I'm not the smartest man when it comes to math, but if it's correct, a
grand total of $57 million prior to thirteen percent state tax deduction.
Leonard was basically sitting on side money and Clippers payroll.
Sounds like the dots are forming right now. Let's go a little further into
this and see what else is uncovered.
When trusted journalist and podcaster Pablo Torre broke the news,
another unnamed employee who worked for Aspiration told Torre the
payment to Leonard was to circumvent the salary cap. Hmm... A former
employee spilled the tea and let it be known based on information
gathered. Ballmer further invested more money into Aspiration of ten
million dollars in March 2023. This sounds the alarms for many NBA
team owners and governors who are curious as fans.
Commissioner Adam Silver is a very smart man and will have to
eliminate feelings over anything to send a message. Yes, it's a burden
on the NBA and using resources to prove any wrongdoing which will
take a while to cipher through. Team governors are wanting answers
into rather Ballmer violated any bylaws.
In the madness of it all, Leonard was paid to basically "no-show" for
twenty-eight million dollars. Aspiration filed for bankruptcy and owed
$one hundred-seventy million dollars and thirty million to the Clippers.
Plus Leonard's seven million dollars as well.
Ballmer was interviewed by ESPN's Ramona Shelburne and it felt like
he was guilty in defending this whole thing. Knowing the stakes, going
on a national sports show, telling everyone he was conned into
investing. A billionaire sports owner conned? Miss me with that Mr.
Ballmer! Getting madder with each question with his millions of dollars
invested and Leonard's role.
If I'm Adam Silver, here's the severity of punishment given:
Steve Ballmer:
Fined $250 million dollars for a second violation of circumventing the
salary cap.
Suspended for the 2026 NBA season.
Kawhi Leonard:
Fined $100 million dollars for violating the CBA and receiving additional
money for "no-show."
Suspended 25 games for the 2026 NBA season.
Voided contract with the Los Angeles Clippers.
Los Angeles Clippers:
Stripped of draft picks through 2036.
No postseason appearances through 2027
No salary cap incentives to sign free agents.
Does it look like I'd care? Absolutely not because the message would be
loud and clear to other teams. You wanna circumvent the salary cap,
severe punishment will follow. What Ballmer and Leonard did was put
the franchise in limbo with dumbfounded ignorance.
Costing current and future players their generational wealth with doing
shady business; while acting like nothing went wrong. It's a damning
look on the NBA product and how fans will view it moving forward. If this
were any other team, the national sports media would have details from
sources every three minutes.
In the end, Steve Ballmer is guilty as charged and should be removed
as owner of the Los Angeles Clippers. No amount of money can bail you
out of trouble. Kawhi Leonard may be forced to retire and go home with
all the money made for load management and no show.
Let's just say the 2026 NBA season will be overshadowed by the lowly
step-child of Los Angeles and their shady business investments
courtesy of their beloved billionaire owner Steve Ballmer. If Adam Silver
does the right thing, the Clippers will be playing for nothing in 2026.
