"If It's Broken, Why Fix It Now?"
In one of the most unusual moments in sports memories, what's
happening in the NBA All-Star Game? Players shooting forty-foot three
pointers? No defense, just unwatchable basketball for three hours. It's
been a case study in trying to fix the NBA All-Star game. Commissioner
Adam Silver MAY have found a simple fix moving forward.
Remember when the game meant something to players? Back when
fans were excited to see their favorite players represent the East and
West? It was must see television during the apex of what used to be
NBA All-Star weekend. Competitive basketball with a lot of media
coverage. Now, its went total off the grid with changing concepts.
As it was presented, Silver has put his stamp of approval for USA vs
World players. USA having the superstars and competitive natures
against World players who've been dominating for the last decade or so.
American players such as LeBron James, Steph Curry, Kevin Durant
are the last of their era. With the World players winning year in and out,
Nikola Jokic, Giannis, Luka Doncic, this is what needs to happen in
saving the all-star game.
Here's the pros and cons of this concept:
Pros:
Fans know every player in their respective country.
Media coverage would increase with this new concept.
Adds more excitement like Olympics or FIBA style basketball.
Eliminating East vs West conferences.
Cons:
How the league can market this concept will be a challenge.
Player engagement and dialogue in giving fans quality basketball.
Lack of effort from players who'll be going half speed in an exhibition
setting.
Players sitting out to avoid an injury while participating in a meaningless
game.
In a sense, Team USA vs Team World spotlights more than what you
think. Something new and challenging will have trial and error. If this
helps salvage the event, keep it moving forward. If it flops, just eliminate
the weekend all together. Giving players time away for a week benefits
them mentally and physically. With players already sitting out due to
load management, the all-star game is that in real time. Players are still
obligated to promote major brands such as Nike, Jordan Brand, Adidas,
Under Armour and whatever other companies are connected to the
NBA.
Players are exhausted and try to play through it, but the product is
watered down and less enthusiasm. If truth be told, have it once the
NBA Finals conclude late June... Or have a G-League All-Star game in
place of it. I know it sounds crazy, but at least those guys will have
something to play for. It would give fans an opportunity to see who can
be added to the roster come playoff time.
If Silver's plan is a success and solving a decade old issue works, run it
back in 2027. Something has to change and hopefully this will allow
players to really take it more seriously. With Team World having the
most dominate players, Team USA will have to show up to play. It may
look and sound complicated, but hopefully a step in the right direction to
save this event.
