Embracing the Season: Nearing Victory in the Army Navy Challenge and Finding Balance in a Digital World

Embracing the Season: Nearing Victory in the Army Navy Challenge and Finding Balance in a Digital World

Early this morning, amidst the clanging of weights and the rhythmic thud of running shoes, I hit 85.92 miles in the Army Navy 100-mile challenge. I’m teetering on the edge of victory, and with the year’s end in sight, optimism is my steadfast companion. This episode isn’t just about personal triumphs, though; it's about embracing the season's spirit. Join me as I share the warmth of the holidays, the importance of pausing to spend time with loved ones, and the serendipitous joy found in the simplest moments.

As we reflect on the year, I also muse over the evolution of communication in our hyper-digital world. From the nostalgia of websites to the rapid-fire consumption on TikTok and Instagram, we're riding the wave of change together. And if you're thinking we've lost touch with our roots, think again. I introduce the CrossFit Pittsburgh training journal—a testament to the timeless power of pen and paper in our tech-dominated lives. Whether you're tracking your fitness journey or just jotting down thoughts, this episode is a reminder of the balance we're all striving for between the analog and the digital.

00:00:00.941 --> 00:00:01.383
Good morning.

00:00:01.383 --> 00:00:07.434
It is Christmas Eve, december 24th 2023.

00:00:07.434 --> 00:00:16.873
I'm here in my office, I'm about to head home, got up earlier this morning, came in to log some miles and get in a workout.

00:00:16.873 --> 00:00:25.007
So update for the Army Navy 100 miles challenge Past 85 miles this morning.

00:00:25.007 --> 00:00:38.970
I tend to use the GPS on my phone and I don't really pay attention.

00:00:38.970 --> 00:00:42.442
I kind of have the route in mind and do my thing.

00:00:42.442 --> 00:00:47.850
But 85.92 as of this morning.

00:00:47.850 --> 00:00:56.064
Had I known that it was.92, I would have taken a few more steps and rounded the 86,.

00:00:56.064 --> 00:01:03.475
But be as it may, I'm feeling pretty good.

00:01:03.475 --> 00:01:06.408
We've got plenty of time to get the 100 miles in by the end of the year.

00:01:06.408 --> 00:01:08.561
There's still time to donate.

00:01:08.561 --> 00:01:15.611
Links are all over my social media, so do the right thing.

00:01:15.611 --> 00:01:22.725
Also, a couple housekeeping notes as the year comes to a close.

00:01:22.725 --> 00:01:28.760
A holiday schedule is posted on our website under workout of the day.

00:01:28.760 --> 00:01:30.947
I pushed it out to social media.

00:01:30.947 --> 00:01:32.572
Check it out.

00:01:32.572 --> 00:01:50.123
And also, while we're on this subject, on our website, an actual http colon slash slash, www dot crossfordpittsburgcom, there are workouts of the day.

00:01:50.203 --> 00:01:51.986
There's a whole online marketplace.

00:01:51.986 --> 00:01:56.263
It's all kinds of stuff, but I think it's interesting.

00:01:56.263 --> 00:01:59.569
I mean, before there was an internet, before there were websites.

00:01:59.569 --> 00:02:02.061
How did people do it?

00:02:02.061 --> 00:02:04.585
How do we manage our stuff?

00:02:04.585 --> 00:02:10.302
We went from websites to even more instant gratification.

00:02:10.302 --> 00:02:15.231
And remember, the thoughts expressed in this podcast are solely my own.

00:02:15.231 --> 00:02:22.841
They do not represent the thoughts of CrossFit Pittsburgh podcast, other leadership and so forth.

00:02:24.245 --> 00:02:31.300
But anyway, I think what's happened is we've become such a ultra instant gratification society.

00:02:31.300 --> 00:02:34.627
I don't even have time to check out a website.

00:02:34.627 --> 00:02:39.194
I have to go to what was it now?

00:02:39.194 --> 00:02:39.841
What was Twitter?

00:02:39.841 --> 00:02:40.843
What is Twitter?

00:02:40.843 --> 00:02:41.846
Oh, now it's the X.

00:02:41.846 --> 00:02:47.926
Right, I go to the X, I go to Instagram, I go to TikTok, I go to Tinder.

00:02:47.926 --> 00:02:57.283
That's probably not one of them, maybe I don't know what's the other one.

00:02:57.283 --> 00:03:07.423
Anyway, I think we've become such a hyper instant gratification culture.

00:03:07.423 --> 00:03:09.509
We don't check websites anymore.

00:03:09.509 --> 00:03:10.514
We don't God forbid.

00:03:10.514 --> 00:03:12.681
We send an email or call a phone number.

00:03:12.681 --> 00:03:20.372
So what I notice is I'll find messages that have been sent days ago.

00:03:20.372 --> 00:03:26.673
We don't answer messages on Instagram or any other social media platform.

00:03:26.673 --> 00:03:30.200
We have a Facebook group for our members.

00:03:30.200 --> 00:03:37.585
We have a Facebook page for people who are not our members but want to follow our tribe.

00:03:37.585 --> 00:03:42.556
We have a website with a contact us link.

00:03:42.556 --> 00:03:43.858
All you got to do is hit it.

00:03:43.858 --> 00:03:45.462
I'll get back to you right away.

00:03:45.462 --> 00:03:47.528
I promise I'll take care of you.

00:03:47.528 --> 00:03:51.100
Anyway, schedules posted on there.

00:03:51.100 --> 00:03:57.162
You all need to relax and have a nice holiday, celebrate with family, celebrate with friends.

00:03:57.162 --> 00:03:59.508
That's what it's about.

00:03:59.508 --> 00:04:05.066
You got plenty of time to get after it before and after, so it's all good.

00:04:05.066 --> 00:04:05.968
It's all good.

00:04:05.968 --> 00:04:06.471
Slow down.

00:04:06.471 --> 00:04:14.931
Listen, dear friend of mine from high school said this once Ferris Bueller graduated together class of 81.

00:04:14.931 --> 00:04:21.827
He said sometimes you got to stop and smell the roses, so get to smelling.

00:04:21.827 --> 00:04:32.630
Also, podcast updates we are now on Spotify, we are on Apple with video on YouTube.

00:04:32.630 --> 00:04:34.394
So that's kind of fun.

00:04:34.394 --> 00:04:34.774
That's.

00:04:34.774 --> 00:04:35.841
That's kind of cool.

00:04:35.841 --> 00:04:37.786
You know, that's all good stuff.

00:04:37.786 --> 00:04:43.321
Also now available on the Amazon Marketplace.

00:04:44.923 --> 00:04:59.843
We did a little CrossFit Pittsburgh training journal Right, so had an idea for this a little while ago and it's just just pretty much everything we do here is based on past experience.

00:04:59.843 --> 00:05:16.185
All right, successes and failures and trials and errors, but we use a good software that has a compatible app and you can track your workouts and do all that register for classes and everything.

00:05:16.185 --> 00:05:20.440
Sometimes a good paper and pen is the way to go.

00:05:20.440 --> 00:05:45.682
So, looking back in my sea chests and whatnot, all over the house I have shelves of those old collegiate composition books, you know, with the black and white paper cover and just notes of old workouts from from back to my God, my college days, when I was boxing you know, just a young man.

00:05:45.682 --> 00:05:52.863
So I started thinking about that and I did take a look at a couple journals that are out on the market.

00:05:52.863 --> 00:05:55.911
The thing that I didn't like about them was their pre.

00:05:55.911 --> 00:05:57.062
They're like templated.

00:05:57.062 --> 00:06:00.791
So you have this much room to write the workouts you did that day.

00:06:00.791 --> 00:06:09.107
This much room to do your nutrition is much room to do your supplementation, your sleep pattern, your your hopes and dreams.

00:06:10.971 --> 00:06:11.855
This is a little bit different.

00:06:11.855 --> 00:06:15.964
We have a little bit of greeting at the front.

00:06:15.964 --> 00:06:26.786
Then you've got 365 blank pages and you track anything and everything that's relevant to your personal workout.

00:06:26.786 --> 00:06:29.151
Right, that's it.

00:06:29.151 --> 00:06:30.192
That's all simple.

00:06:30.192 --> 00:06:32.541
It's available on the CrossFit marketplace.

00:06:32.541 --> 00:06:34.906
So I think that's was it.

00:06:34.906 --> 00:06:38.411
No, not stand by.

00:06:38.411 --> 00:06:44.564
It's available on Amazon, not anywhere else.

00:06:44.564 --> 00:06:51.083
Right, we have some here, but Amazoncom, right?

00:06:51.083 --> 00:06:54.990
Anyway, I'm going to get out of here, I'm going to go do some stuff.

00:06:54.990 --> 00:06:58.103
Wish you all a very, very Merry Christmas.

00:06:58.103 --> 00:07:07.468
And while you're at it, let's remember I put Christmas at the at the top of the list of categories, like Memorial Day.

00:07:07.468 --> 00:07:10.040
It's more than a three day weekend, right.

00:07:10.040 --> 00:07:13.591
There's a meaning behind it.

00:07:13.591 --> 00:07:15.336
There's a meaning behind Christmas.

00:07:15.336 --> 00:07:18.704
That's more than just commercialism, right?

00:07:18.704 --> 00:07:19.547
So remember that.

00:07:19.547 --> 00:07:21.632
If you don't remember that, shame on you.

00:07:21.632 --> 00:07:23.389
All right, I'm out.

00:07:23.389 --> 00:07:24.437
Merry Christmas.
