Why the Traditional CPA Firm Model Was Burning Me Out

When I started my CPA firm in 2010, I began with a fairly traditional practice.

I was already passionate about tax planning and regularly shared ideas and strategies with clients. But over time, I started seeing a problem with the way traditional accounting services were priced.

In this older Financial Clarity interview with Hannah Smolinski, I explained why the hourly model became so frustrating for me.

When the firm is focused on hours, there is pressure to minimize the amount of time spent on an engagement.

But as an advisor, I wanted to do the opposite.

I wanted to spend enough time with the client to find opportunities, think through strategies, and give them the level of service they deserved.

Trying to satisfy both sides of that equation contributed to burnout and made me question the traditional firm model.

That experience became part of what pushed me toward tax advisory and a different approach to pricing.

For me, the question became much bigger than what we charged.

I wanted the way we charged to support better work for the client and a healthier firm for the people doing that work.
