When I was growing up, financial security mattered to me because I knew what it felt like not to have much of it.
My mom was a single teacher, and I knew early on that I wanted to find a path where I could take care of myself financially.
That led me into finance.
Then I found tax planning, and somehow this very niche corner of the profession became something I genuinely loved.
I liked being the detective. I liked digging through the numbers and finding opportunities that could make a real financial difference for a client.
But working with business owners taught me something else too.
Being a CPA is rarely just about the numbers.
Sometimes you're helping a client work through cash flow decisions. Sometimes you're asking uncomfortable questions about spending. Sometimes you're acting as a coach or counselor because the financial side of a business is tied so closely to the person running it.
Looking back at this throwback interview, I can see why that combination kept me interested. I wanted financial security for myself, but I ended up building a career around helping other people create more of it too.
