The Question That Changed How I Priced My CPA Firm

In this older Financial Clarity conversation with Hannah Smolinski, I shared the moment that pushed me to rethink how my CPA firm worked.

After having kids, I realized I could not keep operating like a workaholic.

So I hired a business coach, Chuck Bauer.

He asked me which clients I genuinely loved working with.

My answer was local high-net-worth executives.

Then he asked whether I was creating meaningful value for them.

I knew I was, and I also knew there was more I could be doing.

That led me to build service packages around the clients I served best.

From there, I developed the ROI Method of Value Pricing.

Instead of basing the fee only on time, I looked at the financial gains the engagement could create, along with factors like complexity, urgency, risk, and intangible benefits such as greater access or more frequent meetings.

For me, value pricing grew out of a bigger question:

How do I build a firm that serves clients better without requiring me to work myself into the ground?
