If AI Automates Compliance, What Happens to Accountants?

In this older Financial Clarity episode with Hannah Smolinski, we talked about a question that has only become more relevant: What happens to accounting as more compliance work becomes automated?

The repeatable parts of the profession are the easiest places for technology and machine learning to make an impact.

That includes transaction-level work and other processes that follow predictable rules.

I did not see that as a reason for accountants to panic.

I saw it as another reason to move deeper into advisory.

When you're working closely with a business owner, the right decision is not always based on math alone.

You may need to understand their goals, leadership situation, emotions, risk tolerance, and where they are trying to take the business.

That context comes from knowing the client.

Technology can help us process information faster. The opportunity for accountants is to use that time and insight to become better advisors.

That is a conversation I was having years ago, and I think it matters even more now. 🤖
