Twenty Years of Taylor Swift: The Debut Album Turns 20, the Website Update That Set Off Taylor’s Version Theories, and a Chart Double

Twenty years ago today, a sixteen-year-old with curly hair and a guitar released a self-titled country album. Everything since — the stadiums, the records, the Oscar campaign — grew out of it. This week Taylor’s official site quietly added a “20 years of Taylor Swift” archive graphic, and the fandom did what the fandom does. Lyla on two decades, what’s actually known about the re-recorded debut, and a chart week for the history books.

🎸 Oct. 24, 2006: Taylor Swift, written largely in high school. “Tim McGraw” in math class. “The Outside” at twelve. She refused to change the name Drew in “Teardrops on My Guitar”

📈 She turned down RCA to sign with a label that didn’t exist yet — Scott Borchetta’s Big Machine — because she wanted a label that needed her

0:03 Hey everyone, I'm Lila and welcome back to Taylor Swift Today. This week we hit a milestone that genuinely gave me goosebumps because it has officially been 20 years since the album that started it all. Two decades of Taylor Swift. And to mark it, Taylor dropped a little website clue that sent the entire fandom into an absolute meltdown. We have also got. Some adorable family moments, a jaw-dropping chart achievement, and a little moment at a football game worth talking about. So let's get into it. Let's start with the big one.

0:44 On October 24th, 2006, a 16-year-old girl with curly blonde hair and a guitar released her very first album, a self-titled record simply called Taylor Swift. And this week, that album turned 20 years old. 20. Let that wash over you for a second. Everything, the stadium tours, the billions of dollars, the VMA records, the Oscar campaign we talked about last week, all of it grew from that one little country album two decades ago. And the story of how it came together is so inspiring, especially if you. Are young and dreaming big. Taylor had moved to Nashville as a kid to chase this dream, and she became the youngest songwriter ever signed to her publishing company. But here is the part I love.

1:32 She actually walked away from a deal with a big established record label, RCA, because they wanted to control her. Instead, she took a massive gamble on a brand new label that did not even technically exist yet called Big Machine Records, run by a man named Scott Borchetta, because he was the first person who believed in her own songs. She said she wanted a label that needed her, that was counting on her. At 15 years old, she bet on herself. Incredible. And those early songs came straight from her real teenage life. She wrote her very first single, Tim McGraw, in her math class. She wrote a song called The Outside when she was just 12 years old about feeling like a complete outcast at school. And on the song Teardrops on My Guitar, an executive actually suggested she change the name of the boy it was about to something more universal.

2:29 And Teenage Taylor flat out refused. because the song was about a real crush named Drew, and she has always insisted on telling the truth in her music. That album went on to earn her the very first Grammy nomination of her career for Best New Artist. The whole empire. Built on a teenager who refused to let anyone tell her. She did not have a valid story to tell. Now, here is where it gets exciting for all of us right now, because Taylor did not let this anniversary pass quietly. This week, fans noticed. That she updated the archive section of her official website with a beautiful new graphic reading. 20 years of Taylor Swift.

3:09 complete with confetti and photos from every single one of her eras. And the fandom immediately lost their collective minds because you know what fans have been waiting years for. The re-recorded version of this album, which everyone calls debut, Taylor's version. So here is the honest status because I never want to over-promise you. Taylor confirmed over a year ago that she has already completely re-recorded her entire debut album and she said she loves how it sounds now. She has said it will reemerge when the time is right and that when it does, it will be a joyful celebration rather than coming from a sad place. So the re-recording is finished. It exists. It is sitting there ready. But, and this is the important part, she did not actually announce a release date or drop it this week.

3:54 There is no official debut Taylor's version out right now. The website update was a gorgeous anniversary tribute and maybe, just maybe, a little wink. But our girl is still making us wait. Classic Taylor, dangling the carrot. When it finally does arrive, and I truly believe it will, it is going to be an enormous celebration. When we come back, some adorable family chaos, a huge chart record, and that football moment everyone is chattering about. Stay with me. Welcome back.

4:38 Let's lighten things up with some family fun because Travis and his brother Jason gave us a hilarious story on their New Heights podcast this week. Apparently Jason, who is retired now and taking his fitness very seriously, came to visit Travis and Taylor at their home in Kansas City and he brought his own weights with him. And one morning at 7.30 in the morning, Jason called Travis to come help him work out. Travis said his brain was barely awake and he immediately feared the worst, thinking maybe Jason had hurt himself. But no, Jason just wanted his little brother to come spot him while he lifted. And the best part? As a sleepy, Travis got up to go help Taylor from the bed, reportedly gave her honest, very relatable opinion about being woken up at 7.30, essentially declaring that the whole situation was messed up. Honestly, Taylor, valid.

5:34 That is a woman who values her sleep, and I respect it. And it is so sweet to hear how fully Taylor has melted into this family. Travis has shared before that Jason's four little daughters, who are now officially Taylor's nieces, went through a phase of calling her by her full name, as in, Taylor Swift, can I do this? Taylor Swift. He thought it was the most adorable thing. Now, apparently, she is lovingly known as Aunt Tay-Tay, from global superstar to Aunt Tay-Tay. I am obsessed with it. And while she is busy being the world's coolest aunt, Taylor is also absolutely demolishing the music charts. Here is the stat that stopped me cold. Right now, 20 years into her career, Taylor Swift is sitting at number one on both of the biggest Billboard charts at the same time.

6:29 Her song Patient Zero is topping the Hot 100, the chart for individual songs, while her album The Life of a Showgirl is topping the Billboard 200, the chart for albums like To be dominating both charts simultaneously two decades after your debut is a genuinely staggering feat. Most artists would kill for one of those. She has both right now. Now, I do want to touch on one more thing because it has been floating around and I. Think it deserves a fair and human take. At a recent Chiefs game, a fan got very close to Taylor Sweet and was holding up a phone to film her and Taylor gestured for the person to stop and to watch the game instead. And naturally, some outlets ran with dramatic headlines suggesting she is, quote, at a breaking point with fame.

7:16 And here is my honest two cents on that. Let's all take a breath. This is a woman who simply wanted to watch her husband play football without a stranger's camera pointed directly at her face. That is not a crisis. That is not her cracking. That is just a person wanting a single quiet moment in her day. Any of us would feel the same way. I think she is allowed to ask for a little space to enjoy a game. And I am not going to pretend a reasonable human boundary is some big scandal. She is doing just fine. On the field, by the way, her husband is doing better than fine because the Chiefs are a perfect 5-0 and they head to Seattle to take on the Seahawks this week.

8:00 And, of course, you know the drill. The wedding dress. Four months now. Still no official photos. She gave us a 20-year anniversary, a chart-topping double, and a tantalizing website update this week, but that Dior gown remains the best-kept secret in the world. I have fully accepted my fate. I will be 70 years old, still waiting, still happy. So there is your week. 20 incredible years of Taylor Swift, a re-recorded album waiting in the wings, a family that clearly adores her, and a chart record for the history books. What a legacy. And she is nowhere near done. That is our show. I'm Lila. This week, I really want to hear from you.

8:43 So leave a comment on Spotify and tell me, what is your all-time favorite song from Taylor's debut album? Are you a. Tim McGraw person, a Teardrops on My Guitar person, an Our Song person, Take Me Back? And turn your notifications on because if that re-recorded debut is coming, it could drop at literally. Any moment and we will be here for it. Find us on Facebook too. Just search Taylor Swift today. And share this with the friend who has been a Swiftie since all the way back in 2006.
