It's great to hear new music from Barry Harris, and I've gotta say that one was quite awesome. We also heard newer remix of Con Can's I Beg Your Pardon, and we started the set with the original extended mix of We Love You from Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark. Taken from the 1986 album The Pacific Age. If you have not heard that album, I highly recommend going on checking it out. Now we move into a brand new music track with three incredible new tracks. We're gonna talk to him about the new album, the creative direction, and we've got a few standout tracks for you in this exclusive first listen. So settle in. I am joined right now in the studio by Michael McDonald from Orange County, California's Positronic, a synthpop band we featured many times on the show. He's got a brand new LP on the way, so I thought it'd be a good time to get to know Michael a little better. For anyone just discovering this project, hey Michael, give us a quick backstory. When did you create Positronic and what is the message behind the band?

Yeah, well, I started making music in 1988. Me and a couple of guys from high school, we formed our first band called Foundation. And at that time we were writing a bunch of songs that were really based on the minor keys and um more of the downbeat kind of stuff, uh more influenced by stuff like Bow House and Joy Division and Depache Mode. You know, that really never resonated with me very much. I'm more of an upheat type of person. I always bands like Erasure and uh OMD style. And so um in the early two thousands when I broke away from being in bands and decided to do my solo project, I thought it would be great to really concentrate on major keyed songs and uh songs full of positivity and uh lightheartedness, kind of sing about hope and th and things like that. And so I came up with the name Positronic by putting positivity and electronic together. So that's the story of how I became Positronic.

That's awesome. So you've got a brand new LP on the way. Tell us a little bit about the title, when it's being released, and what listeners can expect from this record.

And so this new album is called Interstellar, and it comes out Friday, February 20th to all streaming platforms, and it will also be available on CD on Bandcamp. The album is a 14-song album, and the theme is Musical Journey Uh Through Space and Time. I sing about traveling through the cosmos, on a spaceship, really observing the beauty of the universe with a special someone. So I'm totally excited about the album. I hope that uh people can uh listen to it and uh that it uh brings a little uh spark of hope into their life and makes their day a little brighter and happier. And I think my music has evolved over the years. I'm really happy with where it's at right now. And I think you're gonna hear a whole different side of positronic on this album.

That's super cool, Michael. So before people pick up the album, I want to play two standout tracks. So which songs should our audience hear first and why?

SPEAKER_08 50:06

Well, if I had to pick, I would pick Rise first because it's got the best of both worlds. The song actually goes from relative minor to major and back and forth. It starts out in minor key, and by the time you get to the chorus, it's in major key. So I think that one uh really stands out for me. Just and it's just got a really nice groove, and I don't know, just uh really gets me in the mood. Uh my second choice would be glow. And uh I just think it's a really neat song. It's uh it's more on the slower side, it's got a very uh heavy groove that kind of builds as the uh song progresses on. And in the middle of the song, the break goes from the progression that it's been doing into more of a drone. It's just full of sounds that shimmer and bounce from the right ear to the left and back and forth, and uh I don't know, I like to sit back with my headphones on, close my eyes, and just kind of imagine the world um as, you know, I don't know, like similar to Blade Runner with the neon lights and things like that. I don't know. I just really like this song, and I hope you will too.

This is the third track on the album, and I have to agree it's one of the stronger cuts on this record.
