Alright, Synth Pop students. Today is the School of Synth, and we're heading back into the late 80s for a band that fused infectious pop hooks with cutting-edge electronics. That band is Information Society. I still remember the first time I heard What's on Your Mind, pure energy. I was driving somewhere, I can't even remember where, but the second it hit my ears, I immediately turned the car straight toward our records. Because I had to have it. Lucky for me, the very last cassette on the shelf was sitting there waiting for me. And that's the kind of impact this song had. This was 1988, and What's on Your Mind wasn't just a club hanger with those Star Trek samples and that driving synth baseline. It proved SynthLop could rule mainstream radio in the US. You deterred Information Society's What's on Your Mind, Pure Energy, right here on The School of Scent. Now, their debut self-titled album was packed with hits, including Walking Awake and their high-energy remake of ABBA's Lay All Your Love on Me. But there was one track that really stood out to me, and it should have been a single. Even the hosts of Permanent Record Podcast on their Information Society show agreed it was a missed opportunity. It's a shimmering emotional gem called Over the Sea. A song that blends sorry melodies with large atmospheric and flares. And heartfelt voice is the perfect showcase of Information Society's ability to make an emotional gym with pure electronic crafters. And I think you're gonna really like this track. It's called Over the Sea. It's on the original self-titled album by Information Society, and it's coming up right now on the School of Sand.

That was Over the Sea from Information Society's 1988 debut album. Information Society did not stop in the 80s, in fact, far from it. They kept evolving, experimenting, and surprising fans with additional albums and hit singles, including Peace and Love Incorporated and Think. And then for a while they kind of stepped away from the spotlight until the original members decided it was time to fire up the sense again. And then in 2014, after nearly a decade without new music, they surprised fans with the album Hello World. And right out of the gate, their single Land of the Blind proved they still had that same spark. It was sharp and smart and incredibly catchy. It was proof these legends could still light up the dance floor decades later. And they're still together today, still making music and thrilling fans with their live shows. I caught one last year and it was absolutely fantastic. Their most recent releases include 2014's Hello World, 2016's Order of Magnitude, and 2021's Odd Fellows, all worth checking out.
