What Can We Each Do to Support the Evolution of Consciousness?

What Can We Each Do to Support the Evolution of Consciousness?

A talk and satsang at Cultural Integration Fellowship, San Francisco, California 8/25/24

We tend to get depressed about the world situation we find ourselves in. The issues confronting humanity are seemingly threatening extinction of the human race and we see noeasy solutions; in fact, they appear to be getting worse. We have numerous different directions that are suggested for a way forward. There are political solutions, economic solutions, technological solutions, environmental solutions, and some even propose simply finding a way to colonize another planet rather than solve the problems right here where we live. We feel small, isolated, alone and afraid for ourselves, our families and our world. Meanwhile we need to earn a living and find a way to survive the stress of daily life, much less focus on the bigger picture issues. The result of all this is mental paralysis. We then try to escape, to shut ourselves off, to drown our sorrows in alcohol or take up use of mind-numbingdrugs, or simply closing our eyes to the issues and trying to march on our narrow path day in and day out, with a sense of duty.

Very few find a way to break out of these approaches and truly look for something new and different that can change the dynamic. And those who do wonder how much their own personal efforts actually ‘matter’.

In this session we explore these issues and challenge conventional approaches to see how we can truly ‘make a difference’.

2
00:00:09,120 --> 00:00:15,000
So it's eleven O 1 Pacific Time.
Why don't we begin the session

3
00:00:27,220 --> 00:00:31,020
just to avoid feedback and
muting people?

4
00:00:46,080 --> 00:00:49,200
So namaste everyone, welcome to
the Cultural Integration

5
00:00:49,200 --> 00:00:53,200

of unity and diversity, we
honour the spiritual traditions

of diverse cultures and
religions.

So before I formally invite

28
00:02:52,790 --> 00:02:57,470
Santosh to make his
presentation, I have something

29
00:02:58,470 --> 00:03:01,630
from Doctor Haydash Choudhury
from this book, The Prophet of

30
00:03:01,670 --> 00:03:07,110
Live Divine.
Instead of reading from his

31
00:03:07,110 --> 00:03:09,590
writings, I'm going to read a
paragraph.

32
00:03:14,240 --> 00:03:16,800
There's a very interesting story
behind this book.

33
00:03:18,440 --> 00:03:25,360
In 1998, even before I had gone
to San Francisco, this book was

34
00:03:25,360 --> 00:03:31,080
presented to me by my aunt, who
is a resident of the ashram.

35
00:03:31,080 --> 00:03:39,320
I pulled this book out from the
shelves and I thought that I

36
00:03:39,320 --> 00:03:41,880
should read something from the
book.

37
00:03:43,360 --> 00:03:48,440
It's from the section
Individuality and Activity

38
00:03:48,640 --> 00:03:55,680
conceived as compatible with
spiritual Illumination, Doctor

39
00:03:55,680 --> 00:04:00,680
Anita Sabri writes.
But is it not active cooperation

40
00:04:00,680 --> 00:04:04,960
with the creative impetus
incompatible with the attainment

41
00:04:04,960 --> 00:04:08,040
of the highest state of
spiritual illumination?

42
00:04:09,280 --> 00:04:12,680
Is not all action but blind
movement of the ignorance?

43
00:04:13,920 --> 00:04:20,160
Or in other words, do not all
works proceed from non

44
00:04:20,160 --> 00:04:23,760
discriminating self
identification of the spirit

45
00:04:24,200 --> 00:04:29,200
with nature?
That indeed is what the time

46
00:04:29,200 --> 00:04:33,320
honoured tradition of ascetic
mysticism would affirm.

47
00:04:35,000 --> 00:04:41,160
Moreover, perfect union with the
Supreme is affirmed to be

48
00:04:41,840 --> 00:04:47,640
destructive not only of activity
but of individuality itself.

49
00:04:48,920 --> 00:04:52,800
On the attainment of complete
liberation, Nirvana and Moksha,

50
00:04:53,360 --> 00:04:57,400
there is supposed to be a total
secession of all being in

51
00:04:57,400 --> 00:05:02,920
absolute not, or a static
absorption of the individual

52
00:05:02,920 --> 00:05:07,320
self in the supra individual
spirit.

53
00:05:09,160 --> 00:05:12,920
This removes even the remotest
possibility of all action.

54
00:05:13,680 --> 00:05:18,360
Dissolution of individuality not
only renders action impossible,

55
00:05:19,120 --> 00:05:22,960
but makes all talk of it
meaningless.

56
00:05:23,640 --> 00:05:30,480
The philosophy of integral non
dualism, however, exposes the

57
00:05:30,560 --> 00:05:33,920
untenability of this whole line
of thinking.

58
00:05:35,080 --> 00:05:38,920
It sheds a new light upon the
concept of individuality and

59
00:05:38,920 --> 00:05:45,520
activity.
It shows that they are perfectly

60
00:05:45,520 --> 00:05:49,480
compatible with the highest form
of liberation or spiritual

61
00:05:49,480 --> 00:05:53,120
illumination.
There is no reason why

62
00:05:53,120 --> 00:05:57,360
individuality should be
dissolved at the drawing of the

63
00:05:57,360 --> 00:06:02,240
sun of pure knowledge.
Individuality is emphatically

64
00:06:02,640 --> 00:06:05,200
not a product of ignorance or
Maya.

65
00:06:06,120 --> 00:06:10,880
What depends upon the action of
ignorance is the

66
00:06:10,920 --> 00:06:18,280
individualization of the lower
nature, the ego, the limited and

67
00:06:18,280 --> 00:06:21,520
unsatisfactory character of the
surface being.

68
00:06:22,080 --> 00:06:25,920
This is a beautiful section.
You know from this chapter the

69
00:06:25,920 --> 00:06:33,360
philosophical basis of Integral
Yoga, and I already gave you the

70
00:06:33,360 --> 00:06:37,440
section from which these lines
have been taken.

71
00:06:40,600 --> 00:06:45,280
Let's meditate on these words
for a couple of minutes, and

72
00:06:45,280 --> 00:06:49,560
then I formally invite Santosh
to make his presentation.

73
00:09:07,690 --> 00:09:15,850
And that you could begin.
Namaste, welcome all of our

74
00:09:16,050 --> 00:09:24,810
friends and Guru by here on this
auspicious occasion of being

75
00:09:24,810 --> 00:09:28,610
able to join with the Kundan and
the Cultural Integration

76
00:09:28,610 --> 00:09:33,560
Fellowship and the spirit of
Doctor Choudhury and Bina

77
00:09:33,560 --> 00:09:37,960
Choudhury, whom we very much
love and respect for their

78
00:09:37,960 --> 00:09:42,720
efforts.
Kundan made a little bit of a

79
00:09:42,720 --> 00:09:47,640
mistake this time and inviting
me to talk and that is he said

80
00:09:47,960 --> 00:09:53,080
speak about whatever you like.
And so we're going to cover a

81
00:09:53,080 --> 00:09:56,280
lot of ground today because I
don't often get that

82
00:09:56,280 --> 00:10:01,640
opportunity.
And for anybody who has any

83
00:10:01,640 --> 00:10:06,960
thoughts, questions or whatever,
I'm leaving some time at the end

84
00:10:06,960 --> 00:10:12,880
of the presentation for us to
share and to raise questions, to

85
00:10:12,880 --> 00:10:15,120
share your own ideas and
experience.

86
00:10:15,120 --> 00:10:19,160
And I encourage you, if you know
something comes up along the

87
00:10:19,160 --> 00:10:21,880
way, make a little note so we
don't lose it.

88
00:10:22,520 --> 00:10:28,960
And let's dive right in here.
The question today is what can

89
00:10:29,240 --> 00:10:33,160
each of us do to support the
evolution of consciousness?

90
00:10:34,080 --> 00:10:41,840
And the texture and background
of that is that we start out as

91
00:10:41,840 --> 00:10:45,920
ego personalities.
We feel we experience the world,

92
00:10:45,920 --> 00:10:51,960
we grow up and get
indoctrinated, if you will, into

93
00:10:51,960 --> 00:10:56,600
the idea that we are separate
from the rest of the creation

94
00:10:57,640 --> 00:11:03,320
and that somehow we have to
survive and thrive at the

95
00:11:03,320 --> 00:11:07,480
expense of other aspects of the
creation.

96
00:11:07,840 --> 00:11:12,920
This is a dualistic perspective.
It also permeates spiritual

97
00:11:12,920 --> 00:11:16,160
practice of the past, which
Doctor Chowdhury and his

98
00:11:16,400 --> 00:11:19,120
paragraph so clearly
illustrated.

99
00:11:20,000 --> 00:11:26,400
The idea that my meditation, my
spiritual development is

100
00:11:26,400 --> 00:11:31,640
something I do separate from my
life in the world and that I

101
00:11:31,640 --> 00:11:34,960
have to abandon the one in order
to achieve the other.

102
00:11:35,960 --> 00:11:39,960
And that is a again, a form of
dualism.

103
00:11:40,040 --> 00:11:45,000
And it remains rooted in ego,
the idea that I am separate and

104
00:11:45,000 --> 00:11:49,040
I can be saved while the rest of
creation can do whatever it

105
00:11:49,040 --> 00:11:56,720
pleases.
That creates for us a lot of

106
00:11:56,720 --> 00:12:03,200
confusion as we become awake and
aware of spiritual development.

107
00:12:05,560 --> 00:12:09,000
We say, well, we want to
meditate, we want to go on

108
00:12:09,000 --> 00:12:11,120
retreats, we want to do these
things.

109
00:12:11,760 --> 00:12:16,880
And we create a duality in our
own lives.

110
00:12:17,840 --> 00:12:21,640
We say, well, I don't have time
to do the meditation right now

111
00:12:21,640 --> 00:12:26,760
because I have to go to work.
We separate things into little

112
00:12:26,760 --> 00:12:40,400
compartments and that basically
keeps us small, weak and

113
00:12:40,800 --> 00:12:44,760
helpless.
When we face the world, we come

114
00:12:44,760 --> 00:12:47,800
out and we see all the problems
of the world.

115
00:12:48,480 --> 00:12:52,400
And we've gone over this in past
talks about the existential

116
00:12:52,400 --> 00:12:58,120
crisis of humanity, all of the
the myriad things that are vital

117
00:12:58,120 --> 00:13:02,000
and mental consciousness have
created that are threatening to

118
00:13:02,000 --> 00:13:06,360
destroy our very existence and
the need for an evolution of

119
00:13:06,360 --> 00:13:10,240
consciousness in order to save
that.

120
00:13:11,560 --> 00:13:19,000
But we haven't yet understood
the oneness, the non dual

121
00:13:19,000 --> 00:13:24,880
nature, as Doctor Choudhury
points out of our existence.

122
00:13:25,280 --> 00:13:28,720
We are not separate from each
other and we are not separate

123
00:13:28,720 --> 00:13:36,240
from the world as a whole.
We are those things that we see,

124
00:13:37,440 --> 00:13:43,600
we participate in them, whether
we live isolated as hermits

125
00:13:43,600 --> 00:13:48,360
somewhere in a cave or a forest
or a mountain retreat or a

126
00:13:48,360 --> 00:13:54,120
monastery, or we participate
fully in the life of the world.

127
00:13:55,120 --> 00:14:01,280
And so the question then comes
up, OK, we've tried political

128
00:14:01,280 --> 00:14:04,040
solutions.
We've tried economic solutions,

129
00:14:04,040 --> 00:14:09,880
We've tried religious solutions,
we've tried uniformity, trying

130
00:14:09,880 --> 00:14:16,240
to make everybody fit into the
same bed of Procrustes that is

131
00:14:16,240 --> 00:14:23,680
somehow going to unify humanity.
And every one of these choices

132
00:14:23,680 --> 00:14:28,200
that we've made in the past,
over thousands of years have

133
00:14:28,200 --> 00:14:32,360
failed.
We are still faced with the same

134
00:14:32,360 --> 00:14:37,120
problems and the crisis has
grown because we haven't yet

135
00:14:37,120 --> 00:14:42,480
addressed the core issue.
One of the things that always

136
00:14:42,480 --> 00:14:46,120
impressed me about the
philosophy and spirituality of

137
00:14:46,120 --> 00:14:53,800
India was the focus on the core
conception of finding out that

138
00:14:53,800 --> 00:15:02,640
being known, what gives?
In other words, knowing what

139
00:15:03,040 --> 00:15:08,560
being known tells us everything
about creation, that core

140
00:15:08,560 --> 00:15:13,920
principle.
And that principle is that with

141
00:15:13,920 --> 00:15:18,800
the unity of our consciousness
and our psychology and our

142
00:15:18,800 --> 00:15:27,960
relationship to the world, we
have to find a way to make, as

143
00:15:27,960 --> 00:15:32,080
Sri Aurobindo points out, all
life into yoga.

144
00:15:32,680 --> 00:15:37,920
And what does that mean from the
grand perspective of the

145
00:15:37,920 --> 00:15:41,440
evolution of consciousness?
Trior Obindo points out that

146
00:15:42,920 --> 00:15:46,520
nature is undertaking an
evolution of consciousness, what

147
00:15:46,520 --> 00:15:49,840
he calls the yoga of nature, and
it can take millennia.

148
00:15:52,160 --> 00:15:59,840
Human beings, as they awaken to
their spiritual capacities, have

149
00:15:59,840 --> 00:16:05,400
the ability to consciously
participate and help speed up

150
00:16:06,000 --> 00:16:10,920
the yoga of nature.
That does not necessarily mean

151
00:16:10,920 --> 00:16:15,640
that some individual is going to
be able to escape the rest of

152
00:16:15,640 --> 00:16:21,760
humanity and somehow become
enlightened and everyone else is

153
00:16:21,760 --> 00:16:27,200
still left behind.
It really means that through

154
00:16:27,320 --> 00:16:35,000
individual practice and through
our relationship to the external

155
00:16:35,000 --> 00:16:38,760
world that we experienced
through our relationships with

156
00:16:39,120 --> 00:16:44,680
family, friends, acquaintances,
work colleagues and our work in

157
00:16:44,680 --> 00:16:50,680
the world, that there is an
interactive process that creates

158
00:16:50,680 --> 00:16:56,960
first of all, the texture of
consciousness within humanity

159
00:16:57,640 --> 00:17:01,760
that textures our vital nature,
our physical nature and our

160
00:17:01,760 --> 00:17:07,560
mental nature so that progress
beyond into a new level of

161
00:17:07,560 --> 00:17:14,440
consciousness becomes possible.
And secondly, that through our

162
00:17:14,839 --> 00:17:20,079
evolutionary development, we
vibrate back into that

163
00:17:20,079 --> 00:17:27,160
collectivity, that progress, and
thereby help all of humanity

164
00:17:28,680 --> 00:17:36,760
gain the platform, if you will,
of developing that next phase of

165
00:17:36,760 --> 00:17:39,240
consciousness.
We are not separate.

166
00:17:41,640 --> 00:17:44,240
We require a change of human
consciousness.

167
00:17:44,280 --> 00:17:49,440
People say it's impossible.
You can't straighten out a dog's

168
00:17:49,440 --> 00:17:54,120
tail.
They say, well, if we look at

169
00:17:54,120 --> 00:17:58,920
things, if we look at the
history of humanity, we see that

170
00:17:58,920 --> 00:18:02,040
actually a change of
consciousness is possible.

171
00:18:02,280 --> 00:18:05,400
It may be hard, it may take a
long time.

172
00:18:06,000 --> 00:18:12,960
In the context of an individual
human life, our 80 or 90 or 100

173
00:18:12,960 --> 00:18:18,880
or 130 years, I think someone
just died at the age of 117.

174
00:18:20,040 --> 00:18:26,560
The longest living person has
now died, so 117 is where she

175
00:18:26,560 --> 00:18:31,600
was.
We don't see the change

176
00:18:32,640 --> 00:18:40,640
necessarily because the time
frame of change is slower than

177
00:18:40,640 --> 00:18:46,360
the speed of our lives.
There is a a difference in you

178
00:18:46,360 --> 00:18:52,360
can say time dilation as they
would talk about in physics and

179
00:18:52,360 --> 00:18:57,320
astronomy nowadays so that the
human life doesn't see the

180
00:18:57,320 --> 00:19:03,800
impact over time.
But we can look back at history

181
00:19:05,320 --> 00:19:10,720
and we can see that huge changes
in fact are taking place that

182
00:19:10,880 --> 00:19:15,600
represent a new level of
consciousness.

183
00:19:16,280 --> 00:19:19,400
Look back 100 years and look to
today.

184
00:19:20,840 --> 00:19:25,720
We see things that could not be
imagined 100 years ago.

185
00:19:26,560 --> 00:19:33,440
I mean, think about it, 100
years ago, more or less women

186
00:19:33,440 --> 00:19:36,760
couldn't vote.
We didn't treat them as equal

187
00:19:36,760 --> 00:19:42,760
people in our society.
They had to follow the dictates

188
00:19:42,760 --> 00:19:50,640
of the male direction.
And nowadays we take the vote of

189
00:19:50,640 --> 00:19:56,640
women and the power of women for
granted, actually, in many parts

190
00:19:56,640 --> 00:19:59,560
of the world.
Is the change complete?

191
00:19:59,760 --> 00:20:02,800
Not yet, but we can see the
change.

192
00:20:03,760 --> 00:20:07,880
Europe has changed, United
States has changed, other parts

193
00:20:07,880 --> 00:20:11,440
of the world have changed.
There's still change taking

194
00:20:11,440 --> 00:20:16,360
place, and there's still.
A resistance to it from those

195
00:20:16,360 --> 00:20:20,520
forces that want to maintain the
status quo ante.

196
00:20:21,040 --> 00:20:24,360
That doesn't mean that a change
of consciousness hasn't taken

197
00:20:24,360 --> 00:20:26,720
place.
It means that it's still in

198
00:20:26,720 --> 00:20:33,200
process.
We see a new awareness of people

199
00:20:33,200 --> 00:20:38,080
all over the globe.
We see the Internet.

200
00:20:38,080 --> 00:20:41,440
We are able to join together in
meetings like this.

201
00:20:41,880 --> 00:20:47,480
We're able to watch television
and news cycles from all over

202
00:20:47,480 --> 00:20:51,680
the world, and suddenly we
understand the issues, the

203
00:20:52,000 --> 00:20:58,480
sufferings, the opportunities,
the cultural developments from

204
00:20:58,960 --> 00:21:03,280
all other places in the world.
When an earthquake occurs in

205
00:21:03,280 --> 00:21:09,880
Turkey and people are dying and
rushed there, the world responds

206
00:21:09,880 --> 00:21:15,960
and sends aid.
This is a new consciousness of

207
00:21:15,960 --> 00:21:19,880
unity of humanity that is slowly
starting to permeate.

208
00:21:20,800 --> 00:21:24,400
We see the development of things
like the United Nations as

209
00:21:24,400 --> 00:21:29,680
imperfect as it was formed
because the powers that were

210
00:21:30,000 --> 00:21:33,000
wanted to maintain the powers
that were.

211
00:21:33,800 --> 00:21:37,880
And so they set up things like,
you know, the Security Council

212
00:21:37,880 --> 00:21:43,880
veto, etcetera, which has been a
tremendous hindrance on the real

213
00:21:43,880 --> 00:21:48,160
power of the United Nations.
But nevertheless, the concept,

214
00:21:48,680 --> 00:21:53,440
the idea that humanity could
work together to solve problems

215
00:21:53,440 --> 00:22:01,520
together, to avoid wars, to
address worldwide issues became

216
00:22:01,520 --> 00:22:05,400
real.
It used to be that one Kingdom

217
00:22:05,400 --> 00:22:08,960
would fight another Kingdom and
one would become the emperor and

218
00:22:09,160 --> 00:22:14,360
one would become the vassal
state and the emperor would tell

219
00:22:14,360 --> 00:22:16,880
everyone what to do, collect
tribute, and that was it.

220
00:22:16,960 --> 00:22:22,560
Well, that time is changing.
We see a new awareness of the

221
00:22:22,560 --> 00:22:26,200
environment.
Go back to the 1950s only, which

222
00:22:26,200 --> 00:22:30,800
is 75 years.
Nobody really was talking about

223
00:22:31,200 --> 00:22:36,200
the issues of the toxic
pollution caused by our

224
00:22:36,200 --> 00:22:43,760
industrial revolution, the
issues of the chemicals that

225
00:22:43,760 --> 00:22:46,520
were going into the air, the
land and the water.

226
00:22:46,720 --> 00:22:51,080
No one was talking really about
the issues of climate change

227
00:22:51,600 --> 00:22:55,880
that we were greatly responsible
for.

228
00:22:56,280 --> 00:23:02,000
And yet, Fast forward 70 years
and the world is now recognizing

229
00:23:02,000 --> 00:23:06,720
these things as serious and real
issues and working on it.

230
00:23:08,440 --> 00:23:18,600
We have the issue of increased
interest in spiritual practice.

231
00:23:18,600 --> 00:23:23,800
This used to be something that
was done by an individual who

232
00:23:24,280 --> 00:23:30,280
somehow in his local life and
community woke up, became

233
00:23:30,280 --> 00:23:34,200
dissatisfied with what he saw as
the goals in front of him, and

234
00:23:34,840 --> 00:23:38,200
he went and tried to find out
what his spiritual purpose was,

235
00:23:38,200 --> 00:23:46,200
took up yoga or some kind of
meditation practice or Buddhism

236
00:23:46,200 --> 00:23:50,080
or whatever it might be.
This used to be an individual

237
00:23:50,080 --> 00:23:52,880
phenomenon.
Now it's a worldwide phenomenon,

238
00:23:53,720 --> 00:23:59,120
and we see people everywhere in
the world wanting to understand

239
00:23:59,120 --> 00:24:03,360
who they are, what they are, why
they're here, and take up some

240
00:24:03,360 --> 00:24:11,640
form of spiritual practice.
We see new ideas about how we

241
00:24:11,640 --> 00:24:16,080
treat children.
We see the abolition of slavery

242
00:24:16,080 --> 00:24:22,360
in many parts of the world.
We see very, very serious issues

243
00:24:22,360 --> 00:24:32,520
of how we want to relate to each
other, the sensitivity, the idea

244
00:24:32,520 --> 00:24:39,520
that there are new ways to
relate rather than the former

245
00:24:39,520 --> 00:24:47,480
win lose psychology that has
controlled humanity for how many

246
00:24:47,600 --> 00:24:52,240
millennia.
So these are all signs of a new

247
00:24:52,240 --> 00:24:55,400
consciousness, but there is
actually another sign of a new

248
00:24:55,400 --> 00:25:00,880
consciousness that people don't
always acknowledge, and that is

249
00:25:00,880 --> 00:25:07,120
the strength and the
aggressiveness of the resistance

250
00:25:07,120 --> 00:25:10,360
to it.
We see today an enormous

251
00:25:10,360 --> 00:25:16,240
resistance coming up, the idea
of authoritarianism, the idea of

252
00:25:16,320 --> 00:25:20,480
dictatorial control, the idea of
trying to roll back all these

253
00:25:20,480 --> 00:25:27,960
changes.
And these resistances actually

254
00:25:27,960 --> 00:25:33,680
are a sign that this new
consciousness is active.

255
00:25:34,640 --> 00:25:39,280
And those forces of the past,
those forces of the status quo,

256
00:25:40,200 --> 00:25:46,240
feel it, understand it
intuitively and reject it.

257
00:25:46,280 --> 00:25:50,200
And they feel like their
existence is threatened.

258
00:25:50,720 --> 00:25:54,320
And as they say, a cornered
beast is the most dangerous.

259
00:25:55,200 --> 00:26:02,080
And so instead of becoming
concerned about, well, where is

260
00:26:02,080 --> 00:26:06,280
the change, we see all these
retrogressive forces highly

261
00:26:06,280 --> 00:26:10,000
active in our world.
We can appreciate that they

262
00:26:10,000 --> 00:26:14,520
actually are a sign of the new
consciousness.

263
00:26:16,040 --> 00:26:21,800
So once we recognize that a new
evolutionary consciousness is

264
00:26:21,800 --> 00:26:28,720
possible, we have to look at,
first of all, how does it come

265
00:26:28,720 --> 00:26:31,800
about?
What do we, what do we do and

266
00:26:31,800 --> 00:26:35,960
how does that impact the
situation of that texturing of

267
00:26:35,960 --> 00:26:42,400
consciousness of the whole world
that needs to be coincident with

268
00:26:42,600 --> 00:26:46,640
our own individual action.
The first thing is each

269
00:26:46,640 --> 00:26:50,840
individual, whoever you are,
wherever you are, has the

270
00:26:50,840 --> 00:26:56,600
opportunity to work on the
spiritual underpinnings of your

271
00:26:56,600 --> 00:27:05,080
life, change who I am, who you
are, and then through the

272
00:27:05,080 --> 00:27:10,440
radiation principle of that
energy, everyone else around us

273
00:27:10,760 --> 00:27:16,240
takes on some of that energy and
over time we create change.

274
00:27:17,360 --> 00:27:25,400
I have an interesting example.
Back in 1973, I was residing at

275
00:27:25,400 --> 00:27:29,400
Trior Bindo Ashram in
Pondicherry and for a short time

276
00:27:29,400 --> 00:27:34,760
I was working in the dishwashing
section and I had the

277
00:27:34,760 --> 00:27:40,880
opportunity to meet and observe
a man there by the name of Ram

278
00:27:40,880 --> 00:27:44,360
Krishna Das.
Many of you have met him or

279
00:27:44,360 --> 00:27:51,120
heard of him.
He was in his own right ahead of

280
00:27:51,120 --> 00:27:56,280
an ashram guru from Orissa, and
he had come to the ashram and he

281
00:27:56,280 --> 00:28:02,920
was in the dishwashing section.
He was drying plates and he had

282
00:28:02,920 --> 00:28:06,320
such a peaceful and radiant
demeanor.

283
00:28:07,080 --> 00:28:10,160
And people would come to him and
they would touch his feet and

284
00:28:10,720 --> 00:28:12,520
they would ask for his
blessings.

285
00:28:13,120 --> 00:28:19,760
And he was washing dishes.
And yet he had an impact on

286
00:28:19,760 --> 00:28:24,320
many, many thousands of people,
including people I know today,

287
00:28:24,320 --> 00:28:27,520
50 years later in the United
States.

288
00:28:29,160 --> 00:28:33,280
The impact radiates.
We can't see it in our short

289
00:28:33,360 --> 00:28:41,120
human lives, but over time and
over space, that change

290
00:28:41,520 --> 00:28:44,280
radiates.
Now, we've all heard about the

291
00:28:44,280 --> 00:28:48,040
butterfly effect, OK?
And sometimes we laugh about the

292
00:28:48,040 --> 00:28:50,760
butterfly effect.
Oh, the butterfly in Indonesia

293
00:28:50,760 --> 00:28:53,400
is going to flap its wings and
the whole world's going to

294
00:28:53,400 --> 00:28:55,560
change.
And we joke about that.

295
00:28:55,600 --> 00:28:59,520
OK, fine.
Let's move beyond the butterfly

296
00:28:59,520 --> 00:29:04,280
effect for a moment and let's
talk about the tsunami effect.

297
00:29:05,680 --> 00:29:10,960
You have an earthquake somewhere
in Japan or Alaska or wherever

298
00:29:10,960 --> 00:29:14,120
it might be, and it starts at
tsunami.

299
00:29:14,120 --> 00:29:17,480
And the tsunami starts out as
maybe a one inch wave in the

300
00:29:17,480 --> 00:29:20,720
ocean.
And by the time it hits a land

301
00:29:20,720 --> 00:29:25,160
mass on the other side of the
world, it can be 10 or 20 or 30

302
00:29:25,160 --> 00:29:31,840
feet high.
The impact at the point of

303
00:29:32,600 --> 00:29:39,120
meeting another part of the
world is far greater than the

304
00:29:39,120 --> 00:29:46,240
observed starting point.
We talked about the avalanche

305
00:29:46,240 --> 00:29:51,320
effect, how a small snowball or
a boulder at the top of a

306
00:29:51,320 --> 00:29:54,520
mountain can roll down a
mountain and create an avalanche

307
00:29:54,520 --> 00:29:59,520
that buries villages.
Small starting point, large

308
00:29:59,520 --> 00:30:05,360
impact.
We look at throwing a rock into

309
00:30:05,360 --> 00:30:07,280
a pond.
Virtually everyone has done

310
00:30:07,280 --> 00:30:09,320
that.
They've watched throwing a rock

311
00:30:09,320 --> 00:30:14,840
into a pond and you see ripples
out and that's all great.

312
00:30:14,880 --> 00:30:18,880
That rock is very small.
The ripples are relatively

313
00:30:18,880 --> 00:30:23,440
small, but we don't internalize
the impact of that.

314
00:30:24,600 --> 00:30:32,160
But go ask a dinosaur about the
impact of a rock rippling in a

315
00:30:32,160 --> 00:30:42,200
pond.
A rock that was .08% of the mass

316
00:30:42,200 --> 00:30:47,120
of the earth, came with
sufficient concentration and

317
00:30:47,120 --> 00:30:53,280
force into one spot on the earth
and wiped out most of the life

318
00:30:53,280 --> 00:30:57,640
on the planet, including the
dinosaurs that had lived here

319
00:30:57,640 --> 00:31:00,880
for how many years?
How many hundreds of thousands

320
00:31:00,880 --> 00:31:08,160
or millions of years a rock
.08%?

321
00:31:08,160 --> 00:31:12,720
Not even 1% of the mass of the
earth had such an impact.

322
00:31:15,200 --> 00:31:19,640
Granted, it came with
concentrated force, it came with

323
00:31:20,240 --> 00:31:26,960
momentum when it hit, but that
is the type of work that each

324
00:31:26,960 --> 00:31:29,200
one of us can do in our own
lives.

325
00:31:29,280 --> 00:31:34,560
As we develop in our spiritual
practice and concentrate that

326
00:31:34,560 --> 00:31:39,160
force, we can have an outsized
effect.

327
00:31:39,800 --> 00:31:44,480
I speak to people sometimes
about what I call the 1%

328
00:31:44,480 --> 00:31:48,680
solution.
If you have a straight line of

329
00:31:48,680 --> 00:31:52,880
where humanity is going and
you're able to change the

330
00:31:52,880 --> 00:32:01,600
trajectory in your time, even by
1% / 400 years, you're going to

331
00:32:01,600 --> 00:32:05,120
be this far different in terms
of where you wind up.

332
00:32:06,600 --> 00:32:09,640
And so people say, well OK,
there's 8 billion people on the

333
00:32:09,640 --> 00:32:17,000
planet, what can I do?
Well, everyone contributes to

334
00:32:17,000 --> 00:32:21,000
that texturing of consciousness,
but people who are awake and

335
00:32:21,000 --> 00:32:26,440
aware and focused have an out
sized influence.

336
00:32:27,360 --> 00:32:33,720
You don't have 88 billion
equally influencing people on

337
00:32:33,720 --> 00:32:36,920
the planet.
We look at.

338
00:32:37,080 --> 00:32:40,480
We have an example here in the
United States of someone by the

339
00:32:40,480 --> 00:32:46,320
name of Johnny Appleseed.
OK, now he was a a pastor and he

340
00:32:46,320 --> 00:32:50,240
ran a nursery and he went around
a number of States and arranged

341
00:32:50,240 --> 00:32:53,200
to have thousands of apple trees
planted.

342
00:32:53,960 --> 00:33:03,000
And even today people are eating
apples in this country because

343
00:33:03,000 --> 00:33:05,480
Johnny Appleseed went out and
did what he did.

344
00:33:07,600 --> 00:33:12,560
So we say, OK, well, we see
many, many such examples.

345
00:33:13,800 --> 00:33:17,360
Obviously, names percolate to
the top.

346
00:33:17,360 --> 00:33:23,360
When we think about it, Da Vinci
and Beethoven and Shrioro Bindo

347
00:33:23,400 --> 00:33:26,640
and who knows who else is out
there there.

348
00:33:26,640 --> 00:33:32,800
There's so many names, Doctor
Chowdhury, who have outsized

349
00:33:33,000 --> 00:33:38,840
influence.
We see people that you may never

350
00:33:38,840 --> 00:33:41,880
have heard of.
There was Catherine Long and the

351
00:33:41,880 --> 00:33:47,400
Lady Doubting in the United
Kingdom, and back in 1963 they

352
00:33:47,400 --> 00:33:52,040
decided that they wanted to
address the issue of animal

353
00:33:52,040 --> 00:33:56,800
testing of cosmetics, the
torturing of animals so that we

354
00:33:56,800 --> 00:34:00,400
could have cosmetics.
So they started a movement

355
00:34:00,440 --> 00:34:05,080
called Beauty Without Cruelty in
1963.

356
00:34:06,120 --> 00:34:09,040
And who's ever heard of these
people?

357
00:34:10,520 --> 00:34:15,760
But everybody today knows about
the cruelty free pledge of

358
00:34:15,760 --> 00:34:20,280
cosmetics all over the planet.
And most people have started to

359
00:34:20,280 --> 00:34:23,280
hear that there are countries
all over the world who are

360
00:34:23,280 --> 00:34:27,560
banning the testing of cosmetics
on animals.

361
00:34:29,360 --> 00:34:33,000
Who thought back at that time
that these people starting a

362
00:34:33,000 --> 00:34:37,719
small concept company could have
that effect?

363
00:34:37,960 --> 00:34:44,280
Now I'm a I'm a Direct Line of
descendant from them because I

364
00:34:44,280 --> 00:34:48,000
wound up buying the Beauty
Without Cruelty brand here in

365
00:34:48,000 --> 00:34:50,000
the United States some years
ago.

366
00:34:50,600 --> 00:34:53,880
And I carry on their legacy in
that sense.

367
00:34:53,880 --> 00:34:56,199
But other than that, who else
has heard of them?

368
00:34:58,360 --> 00:35:04,560
So when we think about it,
instead of feeling like I'm just

369
00:35:04,560 --> 00:35:07,800
so small and insignificant, what
can I do?

370
00:35:08,720 --> 00:35:14,960
Instead of getting depressed
about how big the problems are

371
00:35:14,960 --> 00:35:22,880
and how small I am, I suggest
that everybody do whatever you

372
00:35:22,880 --> 00:35:27,160
can do.
And you will have an outsize

373
00:35:27,360 --> 00:35:32,520
influence compared to billions
of other people on the planet

374
00:35:32,520 --> 00:35:35,880
just by being who you are and
doing what you do and being

375
00:35:35,880 --> 00:35:39,600
awake and carrying that
consciousness into your

376
00:35:39,600 --> 00:35:45,640
relationships, into your work,
into your educational practice,

377
00:35:45,640 --> 00:35:50,280
into your retirement.
Now I hear many people, you

378
00:35:50,280 --> 00:35:53,400
know, it's like I've worked my
whole life and, and now I'm

379
00:35:53,400 --> 00:35:55,440
retired and I just want to enjoy
myself.

380
00:35:55,600 --> 00:35:59,680
OK.
When you really talk to these

381
00:35:59,680 --> 00:36:02,880
people, you find out that they
feel like their lives are empty

382
00:36:02,880 --> 00:36:06,880
in many cases.
And the mother has said an

383
00:36:06,880 --> 00:36:09,120
aimless life is a meaningless
life.

384
00:36:09,800 --> 00:36:15,200
So take your retirement and turn
it into something beneficial,

385
00:36:15,520 --> 00:36:18,600
whether it's creating beauty in
the world, whether it's raising

386
00:36:18,600 --> 00:36:22,360
beautiful plants, whether it's
volunteering and doing

387
00:36:22,360 --> 00:36:27,640
something, whether it's just
being a good influence and a

388
00:36:27,640 --> 00:36:34,880
peaceful, happy person relating
to the people around you.

389
00:36:35,240 --> 00:36:41,400
It has an influence.
We've heard about the 100th

390
00:36:41,400 --> 00:36:45,880
monkey phenomenon, and let's
talk about that for a moment

391
00:36:45,880 --> 00:36:48,680
because that's really very
interesting.

392
00:36:49,440 --> 00:36:54,440
Some people were studying a
tribe of monkeys, I think it was

393
00:36:54,440 --> 00:36:58,440
in Southeast Asia or Indonesia
somewhere, and they found that

394
00:36:58,440 --> 00:37:01,160
one monkey was washing its fruit
before eating.

395
00:37:02,040 --> 00:37:05,240
And as they continued observing,
they found that other monkeys

396
00:37:05,240 --> 00:37:11,760
began to adopt that practice.
And then eventually virtually

397
00:37:11,760 --> 00:37:15,480
the whole tribe of monkeys there
started washing their fruit.

398
00:37:16,240 --> 00:37:21,800
What they didn't expect was that
at a certain point, when all the

399
00:37:21,800 --> 00:37:25,840
monkeys in that tribe were
washing their fruit, monkeys the

400
00:37:25,840 --> 00:37:28,120
world over began to wash their
fruit.

401
00:37:29,080 --> 00:37:33,560
Now they didn't have the benefit
of telephones, Internet, and all

402
00:37:33,560 --> 00:37:39,960
those other things.
They had the benefit of what TR

403
00:37:39,960 --> 00:37:46,440
Deschardins calls the nuosphere,
the the sphere of mental energy,

404
00:37:47,720 --> 00:37:53,280
just as we have a biosphere, the
sphere of vital energy that

405
00:37:53,280 --> 00:37:58,320
permeates the world.
And when enough monkeys focused

406
00:37:58,320 --> 00:38:03,600
on the same issue, other monkeys
who became receptive to that

407
00:38:03,600 --> 00:38:08,120
vibration somewhere else in the
world were able to pick it up.

408
00:38:08,920 --> 00:38:11,920
And we see the same thing
happening in humanity.

409
00:38:12,560 --> 00:38:17,200
So the challenge for each of us,
when we think about how small

410
00:38:17,200 --> 00:38:24,960
and insignificant we are, is
which one of us may actually be

411
00:38:25,320 --> 00:38:32,320
the 100th monkey for humanity.
How do we know?

412
00:38:32,680 --> 00:38:38,680
We won't know, but that is one
of the challenges in front of us

413
00:38:38,680 --> 00:38:43,800
that we have an opportunity for.
So what are the qualities we

414
00:38:43,800 --> 00:38:46,920
should inculcate?
Because not all of us can do

415
00:38:46,920 --> 00:38:51,840
deep meditation and not all of
us can do big works of some

416
00:38:51,840 --> 00:38:54,680
sort.
You know, if you have the

417
00:38:54,680 --> 00:39:02,040
capability to do things that
impact climate change or green

418
00:39:02,040 --> 00:39:06,880
energy or helpful food
production or whatever also,

419
00:39:06,880 --> 00:39:12,440
then do it, please.
But if you're living your life

420
00:39:12,480 --> 00:39:17,360
and that's all you can do,
whatever work you take up, try

421
00:39:17,360 --> 00:39:22,360
to do it with the right spirit,
that yogic presence.

422
00:39:23,400 --> 00:39:28,880
Radiate the qualities of peace,
harmony, balance, light,

423
00:39:29,760 --> 00:39:37,240
goodwill, compassion, reduce
egoism, respect for all beings

424
00:39:38,760 --> 00:39:41,640
and appreciate the power of
truth.

425
00:39:43,120 --> 00:39:48,600
If we do that, we begin to see
changes in the way other people

426
00:39:48,600 --> 00:39:52,080
relate to us.
And we see changes, in many

427
00:39:52,080 --> 00:39:56,400
cases slowly, albeit because
people are dealing with their

428
00:39:56,400 --> 00:39:59,440
own issues in the people around
us.

429
00:40:00,560 --> 00:40:04,520
And eventually we can build a
culture of consciousness.

430
00:40:07,280 --> 00:40:15,640
So then we come to, OK, you
can't deal with maybe climate

431
00:40:15,640 --> 00:40:20,560
change is too big for you, or
stopping the Arab Israeli war is

432
00:40:20,560 --> 00:40:23,400
too big a thing for you to take
on yourself.

433
00:40:23,400 --> 00:40:28,280
That's OK.
If you've done what you can do,

434
00:40:29,440 --> 00:40:37,240
at least support those projects
that represent the change you

435
00:40:37,240 --> 00:40:42,200
want to see happen.
If you can volunteer, volunteer.

436
00:40:42,720 --> 00:40:45,440
If you can support them with
your goodwill and your

437
00:40:45,960 --> 00:40:49,280
encouragement, and that's all
you can do, do it.

438
00:40:49,800 --> 00:40:53,120
If you happen to have money and
you can give money to them, give

439
00:40:53,120 --> 00:40:57,760
money to them because they need
money to operate energy in order

440
00:40:57,760 --> 00:41:01,360
to operate.
That brings us even to the

441
00:41:01,360 --> 00:41:05,320
project of Oroville, which we've
talked about before.

442
00:41:07,000 --> 00:41:12,840
Oroville is a mother's project
to create a laboratory to tackle

443
00:41:13,240 --> 00:41:20,880
the human issues and the human
issues of clean water, clean

444
00:41:20,880 --> 00:41:27,640
energy, the food issues because
we see the collapse of the

445
00:41:27,640 --> 00:41:32,000
ocean, fisheries which are going
to impact a billion people on

446
00:41:32,000 --> 00:41:34,760
this planet for their very
survival.

447
00:41:37,960 --> 00:41:42,640
These type of issues are being
taken up with various programs

448
00:41:42,640 --> 00:41:47,280
in Oroville, the dealing with
how we can waste less doing

449
00:41:47,280 --> 00:41:52,720
things so that we're not
creating so much toxic pollution

450
00:41:53,160 --> 00:41:58,720
in production and masses of
toxic materials on the back end

451
00:41:58,720 --> 00:42:00,280
that we don't know what to do
with.

452
00:42:02,440 --> 00:42:07,560
They're working on Desalina
Tion, they're working on solar

453
00:42:07,560 --> 00:42:13,240
energy mini grid, they're
working on a high protein hemp

454
00:42:13,240 --> 00:42:16,680
and algae foods.
There's many, many projects

455
00:42:16,680 --> 00:42:22,920
there, but beyond the projects,
they also have the opportunity

456
00:42:22,920 --> 00:42:26,640
to face the one thing that
humanity has never, ever solved

457
00:42:26,760 --> 00:42:30,840
in all of our thousands of
years, and that is to address

458
00:42:30,840 --> 00:42:35,320
the issue of human unity in a
way that isn't purely

459
00:42:35,320 --> 00:42:40,440
uniformity.
It's highly audacious to say

460
00:42:40,640 --> 00:42:44,840
let's tackle human unity and
bring people from all different

461
00:42:44,840 --> 00:42:48,480
backgrounds, cultures,
countries, languages, mindsets,

462
00:42:48,480 --> 00:42:53,240
educational interests, etcetera,
and let's bring them into one

463
00:42:53,240 --> 00:42:56,360
place together and let them
figure out how to do governance

464
00:42:56,360 --> 00:42:59,560
of 1 and of of one community
together.

465
00:43:01,080 --> 00:43:04,320
What do you think the odds of
success of that are first time

466
00:43:04,320 --> 00:43:07,960
out?
You know, we have an apocryphal

467
00:43:07,960 --> 00:43:13,720
story of our The Invention of
the Light bulb by Thomas Edison.

468
00:43:13,760 --> 00:43:18,440
And when I was a young child, I
lived in a place called Menlo

469
00:43:18,440 --> 00:43:23,520
Park Terrace, which was right
next to Menlo Park, NJ, where

470
00:43:23,800 --> 00:43:27,840
Thomas Edison did his work.
So I got to hear all these

471
00:43:28,280 --> 00:43:34,680
stories, and they may or may not
be true, but he once said that

472
00:43:34,720 --> 00:43:38,960
in order to invent the light
bulb, he failed 1000 times.

473
00:43:40,360 --> 00:43:42,120
He tried one thing, it didn't
work.

474
00:43:42,120 --> 00:43:43,680
He tried another thing, it
didn't work.

475
00:43:43,800 --> 00:43:48,160
He didn't give up.
And eventually we can flip a

476
00:43:48,160 --> 00:43:54,120
switch and we can have light.
And so that's a symbol for us of

477
00:43:54,840 --> 00:44:00,280
what Oroville has to do to
succeed at figuring out how

478
00:44:00,280 --> 00:44:03,760
humanity is going to learn to
live together in peace and

479
00:44:03,760 --> 00:44:07,040
harmony on this planet and solve
its big issues.

480
00:44:07,280 --> 00:44:12,200
Take up the issues but also deal
with the governance issues.

481
00:44:12,200 --> 00:44:15,480
And they are trying and have
tried many, many of the

482
00:44:15,480 --> 00:44:18,960
different solutions that
humanity has failed at in the

483
00:44:18,960 --> 00:44:21,920
past.
And they failed equally as much

484
00:44:22,520 --> 00:44:24,360
because those are not the
solutions.

485
00:44:25,120 --> 00:44:29,480
But what's interesting is they
go back and they say, OK, let's

486
00:44:29,480 --> 00:44:32,480
see if we can find another way.
And so they set up a group

487
00:44:32,480 --> 00:44:36,280
called Dream Weavers or Heart
Weavers, and they bring people

488
00:44:36,280 --> 00:44:41,160
together and they look at their
failures and they try to find a

489
00:44:41,160 --> 00:44:46,320
way forward.
They haven't yet succeeded, but

490
00:44:46,320 --> 00:44:48,560
the good thing is they haven't
yet given up.

491
00:44:49,880 --> 00:44:55,400
And so to me, that's really one
of the most important things, if

492
00:44:55,400 --> 00:45:03,560
you will, is we've got an
opportunity there to contribute

493
00:45:03,640 --> 00:45:09,040
to the solving of this problem.
Now people see that communities

494
00:45:09,040 --> 00:45:13,600
unify based on an external
threat.

495
00:45:14,240 --> 00:45:17,960
And so now the popular
literature is filled with alien

496
00:45:17,960 --> 00:45:23,160
invasions, and that's supposed
to be something that everyone is

497
00:45:23,160 --> 00:45:29,480
afraid of, and that's going to
bring us together somehow.

498
00:45:29,760 --> 00:45:32,600
We're going to all fight the
aliens or whatever it might be

499
00:45:32,600 --> 00:45:37,560
that that they think it is.
But actually, I think the threat

500
00:45:37,560 --> 00:45:42,600
is closer to home.
I think the threat is our own

501
00:45:43,120 --> 00:45:47,760
existential crisis, the 6th
planetary die off that we are

502
00:45:47,760 --> 00:45:50,840
facing right now, right here,
right now.

503
00:45:50,840 --> 00:45:53,320
We don't need aliens to wipe us
out.

504
00:45:53,760 --> 00:45:56,120
We're prepared to do it to
ourselves.

505
00:45:57,400 --> 00:46:00,400
And so this need to be
addressed.

506
00:46:00,960 --> 00:46:08,080
And as we wake up to this, we
have the unifying factor that

507
00:46:08,080 --> 00:46:13,960
can bring humanity together, the
appreciation at some point that

508
00:46:14,280 --> 00:46:18,520
all of the wars, all the mass
migrations, all of the toxic

509
00:46:18,520 --> 00:46:27,200
chemicals are things that really
we have to face and confront and

510
00:46:27,200 --> 00:46:32,360
solve.
And So what can we do?

511
00:46:33,120 --> 00:46:39,200
OK, I mean, we've got address
climate change, we've talked

512
00:46:39,200 --> 00:46:41,400
about, OK, what can you do about
that?

513
00:46:41,400 --> 00:46:45,880
Well, you might be able to do
solar vehicles, reduce your

514
00:46:45,880 --> 00:46:50,600
energy waste, etcetera.
One of the big things that that

515
00:46:50,600 --> 00:46:55,120
people don't realize is one of
the greatest causes of climate

516
00:46:55,120 --> 00:47:00,160
change, global warming, happens
to be the raising and eating of

517
00:47:00,160 --> 00:47:05,240
animal foods.
And OK, not everybody is

518
00:47:05,240 --> 00:47:10,160
prepared at this moment to go
vegan, but just think, if you

519
00:47:10,160 --> 00:47:15,440
cut your use of animal foods by
10% or 15% and start to

520
00:47:15,440 --> 00:47:21,240
substitute in your diet, that
has its impact, a positive

521
00:47:21,240 --> 00:47:27,080
impact on climate change,
possibly also on your health.

522
00:47:29,080 --> 00:47:33,160
And reduce all those pains and
sufferings that people have

523
00:47:33,160 --> 00:47:37,240
because of the animal food
production, the deforestation

524
00:47:37,240 --> 00:47:42,040
that goes with that conservation
of water.

525
00:47:42,040 --> 00:47:45,920
We have a huge water crisis in
this world because fresh water

526
00:47:45,920 --> 00:47:52,040
is being squandered, lost and
misused.

527
00:47:53,080 --> 00:47:57,040
And with the rise of the Seas
and the melting of the glaciers,

528
00:47:57,040 --> 00:48:01,400
we're actually accentuating the
freshwater crisis.

529
00:48:02,960 --> 00:48:07,880
We have a similar issue with
virtually everything you see in

530
00:48:07,880 --> 00:48:10,520
the world.
You can do something about it

531
00:48:10,520 --> 00:48:16,400
whatever interests you.
This is not a one-size-fits-all

532
00:48:16,400 --> 00:48:19,600
solution.
Everybody finds their own things

533
00:48:19,600 --> 00:48:24,960
that they can do to fix
something, to work on something

534
00:48:25,600 --> 00:48:27,960
to create beauty and harmony in
the world.

535
00:48:28,760 --> 00:48:36,640
Mainly to focus your time,
energy, and attention on being a

536
00:48:36,640 --> 00:48:42,320
benefit to yourself and others
on the planet.

537
00:48:44,280 --> 00:48:48,440
So with that, let's open it up
for conversation.

538
00:49:00,680 --> 00:49:06,120
I'm sure people will agree with
me that I did not err in giving

539
00:49:06,120 --> 00:49:11,840
you the topic that you chose.
We should speak on anything that

540
00:49:11,840 --> 00:49:14,200
you want.
Thank you very much.

541
00:49:14,400 --> 00:49:18,480
That was absolutely,
particularly from the

542
00:49:18,480 --> 00:49:23,080
perspective of participating in
the creation of new

543
00:49:23,080 --> 00:49:29,880
consciousness, which is the
central pursuit of integrity.

544
00:49:29,880 --> 00:49:38,520
Yorker I see Margaret's hand up.
So Margaret is a nature self and

545
00:49:38,520 --> 00:49:44,160
come in.
Thank you so much, Santosh.

546
00:49:45,560 --> 00:49:51,720
I, I think it's always good to
mention what's impactful for the

547
00:49:53,440 --> 00:49:58,040
person.
And for me, the fact that you

548
00:49:58,040 --> 00:50:06,680
mentioned the timeline upfront
that well, first of all, that

549
00:50:06,680 --> 00:50:12,000
the actions are not always seen
and that the timeline is such

550
00:50:12,000 --> 00:50:14,880
that it may occur after your
lifetime.

551
00:50:16,080 --> 00:50:23,200
I think that helping people take
that in at a deeper level, you

552
00:50:23,200 --> 00:50:31,560
know, we're so our egos are so
much into I want to see my

553
00:50:31,560 --> 00:50:35,400
impact, right?
So along with the shift in

554
00:50:35,400 --> 00:50:39,920
consciousness that you're
advocating, that shift in

555
00:50:39,920 --> 00:50:45,360
consciousness will help us with
that timeline issue, right?

556
00:50:47,600 --> 00:50:52,200
Also, I just wanted to mention
that I think for myself and many

557
00:50:52,200 --> 00:51:05,000
others, we've had a real sort of
in your face version of this in

558
00:51:05,000 --> 00:51:12,440
the United States of the outer
looking bleak, put it this way

559
00:51:13,320 --> 00:51:20,120
or can't not not being able to
face or handle what looks like

560
00:51:20,120 --> 00:51:25,400
what's coming.
And I really want to emphasize

561
00:51:25,400 --> 00:51:32,520
that working with force and
mother and Triara Bendo's force

562
00:51:34,800 --> 00:51:39,920
helped Get Me Out of that
orientation so that I could be

563
00:51:39,920 --> 00:51:47,360
functional.
And so it's like a, a, a preview

564
00:51:47,360 --> 00:51:52,720
of whatever we are going to face
that looks dire.

565
00:51:53,480 --> 00:51:59,520
If we've had an experience of
making that shift, then it can

566
00:51:59,520 --> 00:52:04,280
become our way of being for the
next crisis, right.

567
00:52:04,760 --> 00:52:09,520
So anyway, I wanted to thank you
for your how you orientated us

568
00:52:09,960 --> 00:52:12,600
to these very important shifts.
Thank you.

569
00:52:13,080 --> 00:52:16,640
Well, thank you.
And you know, Johnny Appleseed

570
00:52:16,640 --> 00:52:18,280
didn't get to eat all those
apples.

571
00:52:18,560 --> 00:52:34,250
That's right.
So there was just a big

572
00:52:34,250 --> 00:52:39,730
convention in Chicago, and I'm
reminded that what we heard from

573
00:52:39,730 --> 00:52:42,210
many speakers was the same
thing.

574
00:52:42,370 --> 00:52:47,010
They said do something.
They didn't tell you what to do

575
00:52:47,010 --> 00:52:52,600
and they said do something and
don't delay too long about it,

576
00:52:53,320 --> 00:52:57,440
Do something bow.
So it just reminded me.

577
00:53:03,920 --> 00:53:11,980
Thank you.
Well, it's not often that we

578
00:53:14,980 --> 00:53:19,060
basically talk people into
silence here, so it's

579
00:53:19,060 --> 00:53:26,920
interesting, but anybody else
want to add any points to our

580
00:53:26,920 --> 00:53:31,760
discussion here, Something that
you found valuable or beneficial

581
00:53:32,120 --> 00:53:35,720
in your life to move things
forward?

582
00:53:40,720 --> 00:53:43,760
I can fill in till people think
about this question.

583
00:53:44,680 --> 00:53:50,000
What I really appreciated was at
the beginning of your talk.

584
00:53:51,080 --> 00:53:53,360
How?
You're talking about the shifts

585
00:53:53,360 --> 00:53:57,760
in consciousness that have
happened in the last few

586
00:53:57,760 --> 00:54:02,600
decades, things that we have
started taking for granted, but

587
00:54:03,240 --> 00:54:06,200
they didn't really exist that
particular way.

588
00:54:07,520 --> 00:54:15,840
So, you know, that sort of
trajectory put us on a positive

589
00:54:15,840 --> 00:54:21,840
note, which I really appreciate.
And then, of course, you know,

590
00:54:21,840 --> 00:54:25,160
you start talking about
different problems that exist

591
00:54:25,800 --> 00:54:32,120
that we collectively face as
humanity and then coming to how

592
00:54:32,520 --> 00:54:39,480
we can think about the changes.
And what was very important was

593
00:54:39,480 --> 00:54:41,560
that we don't really have to
think big.

594
00:54:41,880 --> 00:54:48,760
You know, we can make small
changes and these small changes

595
00:54:48,760 --> 00:54:52,080
will have and impact in the
future.

596
00:54:53,840 --> 00:54:56,800
And if we are really concerned
about the 'cause if we are

597
00:54:56,800 --> 00:55:02,280
really concerned about the
nature of transformation, the

598
00:55:02,280 --> 00:55:07,600
way I interpreted it was that it
doesn't really matter whether we

599
00:55:07,600 --> 00:55:13,360
are alive in this body to see
the change or not, but the fact

600
00:55:14,080 --> 00:55:18,200
that the change will happen, the
change itself is going to take

601
00:55:18,200 --> 00:55:21,080
its new course.
That was something which was

602
00:55:23,480 --> 00:55:27,160
very good.
Yes, and that's also something

603
00:55:27,160 --> 00:55:30,520
that Sri Krishna mentions to
Arjuna and the Bhagwad Gita,

604
00:55:30,520 --> 00:55:35,680
that whether you participate or
not, all these warriors on the

605
00:55:35,680 --> 00:55:40,640
other side are already destined
to die because change is

606
00:55:40,640 --> 00:55:44,320
happening.
But you are a protagonist in

607
00:55:44,320 --> 00:55:48,680
your time, in your circumstance
to help that along.

608
00:55:49,240 --> 00:55:51,440
Don't take it personally, just
deal with it.

609
00:56:01,140 --> 00:56:08,620
Yes, Sean, thank you, Santosh
for your enlightening talk.

610
00:56:09,660 --> 00:56:13,940
I'm wondering whether you could
share maybe about your own

611
00:56:13,940 --> 00:56:18,740
experience on maybe the
difference of the contribution

612
00:56:18,740 --> 00:56:21,540
we can make at different stages
of our lives.

613
00:56:21,540 --> 00:56:25,680
Because when we're, let's say in
our 20s or in our 30s, we

614
00:56:25,680 --> 00:56:29,320
probably don't have the same
kind of contribution to the

615
00:56:29,320 --> 00:56:32,040
evolution of consciousness as
later stages in life.

616
00:56:32,640 --> 00:56:36,440
And also finding this balance
between being sometimes just

617
00:56:36,440 --> 00:56:40,240
being here with consciousness as
a witness is sufficient to, you

618
00:56:40,440 --> 00:56:43,960
know, provoke change or provoke,
you know, whatever.

619
00:56:43,960 --> 00:56:46,600
And sometimes we need to to do
more the karma yoga.

620
00:56:46,600 --> 00:56:50,160
So could you, I don't know,
maybe share on, on your

621
00:56:50,160 --> 00:56:52,720
experience or your point of view
on these, on these aspects?

622
00:56:53,240 --> 00:56:56,160
Well, sure.
You know, when I was in high

623
00:56:56,160 --> 00:57:02,280
school, I took jobs, whatever
jobs I could get at that time

624
00:57:02,280 --> 00:57:03,920
because I needed to earn some
money.

625
00:57:04,320 --> 00:57:07,320
I wasn't involved in any yogic
practice or anything.

626
00:57:07,880 --> 00:57:11,600
But one thing I did take away
from it and also in my schooling

627
00:57:11,600 --> 00:57:16,440
was I tried to give it 100% and
I tried to do it cheerfully.

628
00:57:17,000 --> 00:57:20,120
I didn't go to work grumbling
and saying, oh, what a rotten

629
00:57:20,120 --> 00:57:22,280
job.
This is why I just have to go

630
00:57:22,280 --> 00:57:25,720
make money.
I went there and said I've been

631
00:57:25,720 --> 00:57:29,720
granted the opportunity to
participate and earn some money

632
00:57:29,720 --> 00:57:33,160
here, let me do it with full
energy, full enjoyment, full

633
00:57:33,160 --> 00:57:37,880
concentration, full involvement.
And I got through school that

634
00:57:37,880 --> 00:57:39,840
way.
And when I got to college, I got

635
00:57:39,840 --> 00:57:46,480
a little lost and dropped out of
college after something of a,

636
00:57:47,080 --> 00:57:49,440
what you might call a near death
experience.

637
00:57:51,800 --> 00:57:55,840
And after seeing the futility of
a lot of the political and other

638
00:57:55,840 --> 00:57:59,040
actions that were taking place
to try and stop the war in

639
00:57:59,040 --> 00:58:03,720
Vietnam and went to Europe and
started studying and practicing

640
00:58:04,360 --> 00:58:07,640
yoga.
And that's actually where I came

641
00:58:07,640 --> 00:58:12,720
in touch with Sri Aurobindo.
But the attitude that I took as

642
00:58:12,720 --> 00:58:17,200
a young person is something I
encourage young people to

643
00:58:17,640 --> 00:58:23,880
undertake, that I encourage the
children of my family to do and

644
00:58:23,880 --> 00:58:25,880
they encourage their children to
do.

645
00:58:26,520 --> 00:58:31,400
And that is do whatever you do
with a goodwill, with the best

646
00:58:31,400 --> 00:58:35,840
effort you can make, concentrate
on it and and really try to make

647
00:58:35,840 --> 00:58:39,320
that work as you go into
careers.

648
00:58:39,320 --> 00:58:44,280
It's the same thing.
It may not be the ideal job of,

649
00:58:44,600 --> 00:58:48,480
you know, changing the planet,
but do it with a goodwill and

650
00:58:48,480 --> 00:58:55,240
relate to people in a way that's
respectful and honest and

651
00:58:55,360 --> 00:58:59,480
compassionate.
And that will automatically

652
00:58:59,480 --> 00:59:04,640
change the texture of your
community of people that are

653
00:59:04,640 --> 00:59:07,440
around you and how maybe they
react to things.

654
00:59:09,480 --> 00:59:16,480
If you become affluent through
your work and you have extra

655
00:59:16,480 --> 00:59:23,600
money.
Well, I always felt like trust

656
00:59:23,600 --> 00:59:26,840
fund babies tend to have bad
outcomes.

657
00:59:28,560 --> 00:59:33,400
It's just a history.
It's one thing to let your

658
00:59:33,560 --> 00:59:37,320
children have a certain amount
of resources to to carry out

659
00:59:37,320 --> 00:59:40,320
their lives with.
It's another thing to make them

660
00:59:40,880 --> 00:59:44,640
mega millionaires.
We see how that's turned out on

661
00:59:44,640 --> 00:59:48,280
our political stages.
Michael might point out to us

662
00:59:49,360 --> 00:59:53,360
having just gone through a
convention illustrating what

663
00:59:54,200 --> 00:59:58,480
disasters a trust fund baby has
created in this country.

664
01:00:01,200 --> 01:00:03,960
They just don't have a
perspective.

665
01:00:05,360 --> 01:00:08,000
And so if you've got extra
wealth.

666
01:00:08,920 --> 01:00:13,120
Take some of it and dedicate it
to the work that your children

667
01:00:13,120 --> 01:00:14,360
are doing.
That's fine.

668
01:00:15,200 --> 01:00:19,680
And take some of it and apply it
to whatever projects or

669
01:00:19,880 --> 01:00:24,080
opportunities or groups you find
are doing a good work.

670
01:00:24,760 --> 01:00:31,680
And, you know, create a legacy
that outlives you by forwarding

671
01:00:31,680 --> 01:00:37,880
the projects.
If you're a retired person, make

672
01:00:37,880 --> 01:00:40,880
your life valuable to yourself
and others.

673
01:00:41,160 --> 01:00:46,480
Don't just vegetate and think, I
work my whole life and so now I

674
01:00:46,480 --> 01:00:50,840
just get to knock off.
And if you're in a field that

675
01:00:50,840 --> 01:00:57,200
can do something, invent a new
energy or find a way to be more

676
01:00:57,200 --> 01:01:01,440
economical of energy or help
with fresh water, whatever it

677
01:01:01,440 --> 01:01:05,560
might be, then of course you're
already doing something concrete

678
01:01:06,080 --> 01:01:13,040
at the inflection point.
So I think I've covered all the

679
01:01:13,040 --> 01:01:16,000
different gamuts of life.
If you're, if you've got health

680
01:01:16,000 --> 01:01:21,040
issues and you're, you know,
you're bound to a bed and you're

681
01:01:21,040 --> 01:01:24,200
struggling and suffering and you
feel like you can't do anything.

682
01:01:24,640 --> 01:01:28,120
Well, my wife actually tells a
story.

683
01:01:28,120 --> 01:01:31,440
She was doing Hospice for a
while and there was a lady in

684
01:01:31,440 --> 01:01:37,640
Hospice and she was always
extremely cheerful.

685
01:01:38,800 --> 01:01:42,840
And then she decided she was
getting close to her time of

686
01:01:42,840 --> 01:01:46,080
death.
And now she wasn't practicing

687
01:01:46,080 --> 01:01:47,760
yoga or doing any of these
things.

688
01:01:47,760 --> 01:01:52,120
She was just there in Hospice
struggling with her declining

689
01:01:52,120 --> 01:01:56,200
health.
And so she said, I need a little

690
01:01:56,200 --> 01:01:58,840
help.
I want to get some notes

691
01:01:58,840 --> 01:02:00,320
written.
I want to give this to this

692
01:02:00,320 --> 01:02:03,160
person who can use it and this
to that person who can use it.

693
01:02:03,480 --> 01:02:06,360
And she started distributing all
the little things she had in her

694
01:02:06,360 --> 01:02:08,760
life to people who would find a
benefit from it.

695
01:02:09,520 --> 01:02:14,400
And when she was done, she
smiled and she said, I've

696
01:02:14,400 --> 01:02:17,000
completed everything now I can
die peacefully.

697
01:02:17,960 --> 01:02:24,680
So even people in Hospice, even
people suffering health issues

698
01:02:24,680 --> 01:02:30,800
that are preventing them from
doing anything else, have the

699
01:02:30,800 --> 01:02:35,480
opportunity to contribute to the
evolution of consciousness.

700
01:02:39,040 --> 01:02:41,000
Thank you, Santosh.
Thank you very much and thank

701
01:02:41,000 --> 01:02:57,040
you, Quinton.
Wayne, please unmute yourself

702
01:02:57,160 --> 01:03:01,000
and come in.
OK, well thanks for letting me

703
01:03:01,000 --> 01:03:03,720
speak.
Just wanted to before I forget,

704
01:03:04,800 --> 01:03:07,360
I want to thank Condon for for
his book.

705
01:03:08,280 --> 01:03:10,560
It fits so well in my spiritual
practice.

706
01:03:10,560 --> 01:03:13,240
It's my framework now.
It explained a lot of things to

707
01:03:13,240 --> 01:03:14,800
me.
So thank you so much for the

708
01:03:14,800 --> 01:03:17,520
book.
And Santosh, I want to thank you

709
01:03:17,520 --> 01:03:25,360
so much for that Sri Aravendo
study that you publish.

710
01:03:25,480 --> 01:03:27,200
I, I'm, I'm, I'm there every
day.

711
01:03:27,240 --> 01:03:31,360
So it's great.
So let me get to the point here.

712
01:03:32,720 --> 01:03:39,200
When I retired six years ago and
I'm all, I'm 70 now, something

713
01:03:39,720 --> 01:03:42,520
ringing my I've traveled a bit
and I was in a Peace Corps in

714
01:03:42,520 --> 01:03:44,040
Ukraine.
I've done a lot of weird things.

715
01:03:44,040 --> 01:03:48,080
And, but after I retired,
traveling and doing something

716
01:03:48,080 --> 01:03:51,840
for myself didn't seem to be
very productive, except one

717
01:03:51,840 --> 01:03:55,760
thing I could do was make myself
the best I could be in body,

718
01:03:55,760 --> 01:03:57,600
mind and spirit.
Now I don't know where that came

719
01:03:57,600 --> 01:03:59,960
from.
I did practice yoga, but it's

720
01:03:59,960 --> 01:04:02,600
hatha yoga off and on for about
40 years.

721
01:04:02,840 --> 01:04:06,120
But that's what I decided to do
best, best I could be in, in

722
01:04:06,120 --> 01:04:11,360
body, mind and spirit.
And so that that's, that's what

723
01:04:11,360 --> 01:04:14,200
I did.
And rather than travel or try to

724
01:04:14,200 --> 01:04:20,240
do things for myself and I put
my faith in, in, in God and, or

725
01:04:20,240 --> 01:04:21,800
supreme being or whatever you
want to call.

726
01:04:21,800 --> 01:04:27,000
And since then, of course, I've,
I've discovered arrobendo and,

727
01:04:27,000 --> 01:04:32,840
and I've found some other
western philosophers, but not

728
01:04:32,840 --> 01:04:35,360
putting myself first above
everything, realizing there's

729
01:04:35,360 --> 01:04:38,720
other things more important than
me and that I can.

730
01:04:38,880 --> 01:04:41,400
And I'm, I'm the happiest I've
ever been in my entire life.

731
01:04:41,600 --> 01:04:43,240
And my life has not been very
happy.

732
01:04:43,720 --> 01:04:49,200
So I'm very blessed to be a
member of this group and it's

733
01:04:49,200 --> 01:04:53,760
been a life changer for me.
I've, I've, I've, I've really,

734
01:04:53,760 --> 01:04:57,960
but basically starting with
yourself is the best place to

735
01:04:57,960 --> 01:05:01,040
begin if you want to find
something, start with yourself

736
01:05:01,320 --> 01:05:05,120
and make all the changes you
possibly can that will make the

737
01:05:05,120 --> 01:05:07,880
world a better place.
And, and then, then you can

738
01:05:07,880 --> 01:05:11,600
branch out into other things
because like I say, I'm kind of

739
01:05:11,600 --> 01:05:13,920
a professional volunteer.
I can tell you lots of stories

740
01:05:13,920 --> 01:05:16,440
about that.
Sometimes rewarding and

741
01:05:16,440 --> 01:05:19,080
sometimes not so rewarding and
you really don't even want to do

742
01:05:19,080 --> 01:05:22,040
it for the reward.
You want to do it for just the

743
01:05:22,040 --> 01:05:27,760
cause and forget about reward,
but that's kind of my my $0.02

744
01:05:27,760 --> 01:05:30,200
worth.
And this is incredible stuff to

745
01:05:30,200 --> 01:05:33,200
talk about.
I love it and hope we can all

746
01:05:33,200 --> 01:05:34,400
change the world.
Thank you.

747
01:05:34,400 --> 01:05:35,560
Well.
Thank you.

748
01:05:35,560 --> 01:05:49,290
Thank you.
Yes, I went mute yourself.

749
01:05:51,090 --> 01:05:52,730
OK.
Hi Santosh.

750
01:05:53,330 --> 01:05:57,080
First of all, I want to thank
you for a very relevant and

751
01:05:57,080 --> 01:05:59,840
wonderful talk.
I think the question that you've

752
01:05:59,840 --> 01:06:03,600
got is what 1 can do in
different phases of life as

753
01:06:03,600 --> 01:06:06,880
somebody asked.
It bothers everybody and one,

754
01:06:06,880 --> 01:06:09,720
everybody has to deal with it.
I think you explain it very

755
01:06:09,720 --> 01:06:14,520
nicely that whatever we do, it
will have an impact.

756
01:06:15,720 --> 01:06:18,480
We may not be able to see that
in the short run.

757
01:06:19,640 --> 01:06:24,120
Thinking of that aspect, I think
in the current world,

758
01:06:24,120 --> 01:06:26,440
information and data is a big
power.

759
01:06:27,200 --> 01:06:29,680
We even if you're not doing
anything, we always share

760
01:06:29,680 --> 01:06:33,360
information that different,
different ways and different

761
01:06:33,360 --> 01:06:35,840
modes.
So that itself is a poor.

762
01:06:35,840 --> 01:06:41,200
I think one point while sharing
that, I think if if we can use a

763
01:06:41,200 --> 01:06:45,200
lot of judgement and make sure
that we share the data and

764
01:06:45,200 --> 01:06:49,120
information which is only
constructive and positive, that

765
01:06:49,120 --> 01:06:52,240
goes a long way in bringing
about small changes.

766
01:06:52,760 --> 01:06:55,440
I feel that personally.
Well, when interacting with

767
01:06:55,440 --> 01:07:00,040
people and also sharing the
information, that reminds me of

768
01:07:00,040 --> 01:07:04,520
one of the quotation from Lao
Tzu, a very beautiful quotation.

769
01:07:05,200 --> 01:07:09,680
Remember.
So one man sits at his home and

770
01:07:09,680 --> 01:07:12,480
there's noble thoughts,
beautiful thoughts and the

771
01:07:12,480 --> 01:07:14,840
reverberations are heard
thousands of miles.

772
01:07:15,640 --> 01:07:19,760
There is so much true in the
present world that we all share

773
01:07:19,760 --> 01:07:27,000
information and talk about it.
So one big thing I think we all

774
01:07:27,320 --> 01:07:32,080
the way of doing whatever we
learn is keep spreading it and

775
01:07:32,080 --> 01:07:35,040
share it with joy.
That it said will create a field

776
01:07:35,040 --> 01:07:37,280
and domain.
I feel that personally.

777
01:07:39,200 --> 01:07:40,560
Thank you for a very wonderful
talk.

778
01:07:40,560 --> 01:07:47,480
Well, thank you.
Yeah.

779
01:07:47,480 --> 01:07:59,240
Thank you.
OK, it seems that we are

780
01:07:59,240 --> 01:08:07,480
naturally coming to an end of
this wonderful gathering.

781
01:08:08,240 --> 01:08:11,160
Thank you once again.
Thank you so much.

782
01:08:11,880 --> 01:08:14,000
We really enjoyed it.
It was absolutely.

783
01:08:14,160 --> 01:08:16,040
Thank you, Santosh.
Thank you.

784
01:08:17,000 --> 01:08:18,680
Thank you.
Thank you very much.

785
01:08:22,840 --> 01:08:26,840
Take care.
Everyone stayed at night for me.

786
01:08:27,319 --> 01:08:29,399
It's time to say goodnight.
Take care.

787
01:08:30,319 --> 01:08:31,319
Goodnight.
Thank you.

788
01:08:31,319 --> 01:08:31,680
Thank you.
