What Can I Do To Help Solve the Crises Facing Humanity in Today's World?

What Can I Do To Help Solve the Crises Facing Humanity in Today's World?

We tend to get depressed about the world situation we find ourselves in. The issues confronting humanity are seemingly threatening extinction of the human race and we see no easy solutions; in fact, they appear to be getting worse. We have numerous different directions that are suggested for a way forward. There are political solutions, economic solutions, technological solutions, environmental solutions, and some even propose simply finding a way to colonize another planet rather than solve the problems right here where we live. We feel small, isolated, alone and afraid for ourselves, our families and our world. Meanwhile we need to earn a living and find a way to survive the stress of daily life, much less focus on the bigger picture issues. The result of all this is mental paralysis. We then try to escape, to shut ourselves off, to drown our sorrows in alcohol or take up use of mind-numbing drugs, or simply closing our eyes to the issues and trying to march on our narrow path day in and day out, with a sense of duty.Very few find a way to break out of these approaches and truly look for something new and different that can change the dynamic. And those who do wonder how much their own personal efforts actually ‘matter’. In this session we intend to explore these issues and challenge conventional approaches to see how we can truly ‘make a difference’.

1
00:00:02,160 --> 00:00:08,560
Namaste.
Today's subject is integrating

2
00:00:09,360 --> 00:00:14,960
the inner awareness and
consciousness with one's outer

3
00:00:14,960 --> 00:00:22,760
actions.
We find that trying to change

4
00:00:22,760 --> 00:00:25,640
things from the mental
standpoint, from the vital

5
00:00:25,640 --> 00:00:32,920
standpoint, fails.
Humanity is stuck in a crisis of

6
00:00:33,840 --> 00:00:38,960
paralysis, a paralysis of
gridlock.

7
00:00:39,880 --> 00:00:43,120
We have conflicting and
competing mental ideas.

8
00:00:43,120 --> 00:00:47,200
We have conflicting and
competing economic theories,

9
00:00:47,200 --> 00:00:55,040
political ideas, solutions based
on the fragmentation method of

10
00:00:55,280 --> 00:01:01,000
the mental consciousness,
solutions influenced by the

11
00:01:01,000 --> 00:01:08,400
vital forces of desire and self
dealing and self aggrandizement.

12
00:01:09,840 --> 00:01:12,480
None of these approaches have
worked in the past.

13
00:01:12,800 --> 00:01:16,960
We find that if we replace one
political system with another,

14
00:01:16,960 --> 00:01:21,880
or one economic system with
another, we wind up with a very

15
00:01:21,880 --> 00:01:26,240
similar situation at the end,
just different people in charge.

16
00:01:27,480 --> 00:01:30,160
And so we tend to get
discouraged.

17
00:01:30,920 --> 00:01:33,000
But there's no need to be
discouraged.

18
00:01:34,720 --> 00:01:41,560
As we've been discussing in our
recent programs, the first

19
00:01:41,560 --> 00:01:46,680
change that's needed is an inner
change, a change in human

20
00:01:46,720 --> 00:01:54,960
awareness and consciousness, a
linking of our inner growth and

21
00:01:54,960 --> 00:02:02,400
aspiration to the evolutionary
force that is bringing out a new

22
00:02:02,840 --> 00:02:09,759
level of consciousness that is
beginning to act worldwide in

23
00:02:09,800 --> 00:02:16,520
all fields of human interaction.
So the first step is be the

24
00:02:16,520 --> 00:02:23,600
change that you want to see.
Begin to examine as a witness

25
00:02:24,720 --> 00:02:27,400
where are your thoughts come
from, Where are your emotions

26
00:02:27,400 --> 00:02:32,000
come from, Where are your vital
desires and impulses come from,

27
00:02:32,000 --> 00:02:34,480
Where are your physical
sensations come from?

28
00:02:35,200 --> 00:02:43,680
And begin to align them around
the deeper aspiration, what we

29
00:02:43,680 --> 00:02:48,440
might call the psychic
aspiration, the aspiration that

30
00:02:48,840 --> 00:02:52,840
looks towards something nobler,
something greater, something

31
00:02:52,840 --> 00:02:58,120
truthful, something beautiful,
something harmonious.

32
00:02:59,320 --> 00:03:03,920
And that aspiration acts more or
less as the conductor of the

33
00:03:03,920 --> 00:03:09,520
orchestra, with each of our
different faculties playing a

34
00:03:09,520 --> 00:03:15,520
different instrument and somehow
needing to find a way to

35
00:03:15,520 --> 00:03:19,400
harmonize together.
The real problem is the

36
00:03:19,400 --> 00:03:24,920
disharmony of all these clashing
and conflicting ideas, views and

37
00:03:25,040 --> 00:03:30,200
opportunities, people going in
all different directions without

38
00:03:30,480 --> 00:03:35,120
any real sense or purpose of
where they're going or why or

39
00:03:35,120 --> 00:03:40,880
how they want to get there.
Once we start to do that, the

40
00:03:41,240 --> 00:03:46,360
question then becomes, well, OK,
I can sit in meditation, I can

41
00:03:46,360 --> 00:03:51,000
change my attitude about things,
but that doesn't really change

42
00:03:51,000 --> 00:03:52,680
anything in the world.
What?

43
00:03:53,280 --> 00:03:55,200
What is it?
What are we accomplishing?

44
00:03:56,120 --> 00:04:03,280
Well, the first thing is that
every attempt to develop human

45
00:04:03,280 --> 00:04:10,440
consciousness, even if done in
isolation, secretly, without

46
00:04:10,640 --> 00:04:17,560
anybody else knowing about it or
interacting with you, has its

47
00:04:17,560 --> 00:04:22,320
impact in the overall texture of
consciousness on the planet.

48
00:04:23,520 --> 00:04:27,840
Now, we've all heard about the
butterfly effect, and that's

49
00:04:27,840 --> 00:04:30,920
basically that a butterfly
fluttering its wings in

50
00:04:30,920 --> 00:04:35,320
Indonesia is going to have some
impact somewhere on the opposite

51
00:04:35,320 --> 00:04:39,560
side of the world.
And I'm sure everybody has

52
00:04:40,440 --> 00:04:44,960
considered it and laughed about
it and joked and said, well, I

53
00:04:44,960 --> 00:04:49,280
don't see it.
We're skeptical, and that's

54
00:04:49,280 --> 00:04:53,920
understandable, but let's
reframe the question a little

55
00:04:53,920 --> 00:04:58,000
bit.
When there's an earthquake in

56
00:04:58,000 --> 00:05:04,920
Japan or Alaska or anywhere
else, at a particular point on

57
00:05:04,920 --> 00:05:10,520
this enormous world of ours, we
see a ripple effect.

58
00:05:11,840 --> 00:05:17,360
And then in some cases a tsunami
occurs and where it starts, it

59
00:05:17,360 --> 00:05:23,840
may only be a one inch wave, but
by the time it hits another

60
00:05:23,840 --> 00:05:28,280
coast on another part of the
world, it can be a 30 foot

61
00:05:28,560 --> 00:05:32,080
deluge inundating that part of
the world.

62
00:05:33,240 --> 00:05:36,920
So the ripple effect, the
tsunami effect we may call it,

63
00:05:38,480 --> 00:05:45,960
proves that one point of action,
however minor it looks in the

64
00:05:45,960 --> 00:05:50,560
grand scope of things in the
world, can have outsize impacts.

65
00:05:51,920 --> 00:05:55,400
We see a similar effect with
what we might call the avalanche

66
00:05:55,400 --> 00:06:01,000
effect, A snowball rolling down
a hill, A small rock rolling

67
00:06:01,000 --> 00:06:08,240
down a hill in the mountains may
start an avalanche and bury

68
00:06:08,240 --> 00:06:13,160
villages.
Once again, a small impact at

69
00:06:13,160 --> 00:06:19,080
the point of action, a large
impact down line.

70
00:06:20,960 --> 00:06:26,560
What I frequently discuss with
people is what I call the 1%

71
00:06:26,560 --> 00:06:33,640
solution.
If we can change human actions

72
00:06:34,880 --> 00:06:43,000
collectively, even just 1%.
In other words, not a world

73
00:06:43,000 --> 00:06:48,840
shaking revolutionary change,
but a 1% change in human action.

74
00:06:49,600 --> 00:06:56,640
We see that the trajectory over
several 100 years yields a

75
00:06:56,640 --> 00:06:59,680
dramatically different result
than if we do nothing.

76
00:07:01,680 --> 00:07:07,160
That 1% effect is the action of
evolutionary forces through

77
00:07:07,160 --> 00:07:11,240
time, and it's important for us
to remember that.

78
00:07:13,000 --> 00:07:18,520
So another issue that comes up
frequently is there are so many

79
00:07:18,520 --> 00:07:23,120
problems, how do we know what to
do, what to tackle, how to

80
00:07:23,120 --> 00:07:27,280
tackle it?
One of the geniuses of the

81
00:07:28,280 --> 00:07:36,280
spiritual history of India was
the seeking for what being

82
00:07:36,280 --> 00:07:38,720
known.
All is known.

83
00:07:39,560 --> 00:07:43,760
In other words, what is the core
essential element that we need

84
00:07:43,760 --> 00:07:49,080
to realize in order to have a
complete knowledge?

85
00:07:50,000 --> 00:07:55,040
If we apply that to all of the
human crises that we're facing,

86
00:07:55,040 --> 00:07:59,920
the water crisis, the food
crisis, the income inequality

87
00:07:59,920 --> 00:08:03,720
crisis, the pollution crisis,
the climate crisis, we can go on

88
00:08:03,720 --> 00:08:05,800
and on and on with all these
crises.

89
00:08:08,240 --> 00:08:13,600
What we find is that at its
core, there are certain key

90
00:08:13,600 --> 00:08:20,600
elements that represent the
blockages created by the vital

91
00:08:20,600 --> 00:08:29,280
mental consciousness from which
we act that are the essence,

92
00:08:30,760 --> 00:08:34,440
that being known.
All is known.

93
00:08:35,559 --> 00:08:40,679
And so we come to a concept used
in the logging industry called

94
00:08:40,880 --> 00:08:45,440
the key log.
And what that basically is when

95
00:08:45,800 --> 00:08:52,520
loggers clear a forest and they
roll the logs into a river to

96
00:08:52,520 --> 00:08:57,160
send them downstream to the
mill, eventually so many logs

97
00:08:57,160 --> 00:08:59,320
get clogged up that they can't
move forward.

98
00:09:00,440 --> 00:09:04,960
They're blocked and they send in
somebody who becomes an expert

99
00:09:04,960 --> 00:09:12,680
to identify where the key log
is, what the one log that being

100
00:09:12,680 --> 00:09:16,680
moved will allow all the other
logs to move.

101
00:09:17,920 --> 00:09:22,920
Yes, it sounds very much like
Indian spiritual philosophy

102
00:09:22,920 --> 00:09:29,960
being applied to a very mundane,
external Western industrial

103
00:09:29,960 --> 00:09:35,640
pursuit of logging.
And so if we look at all these

104
00:09:35,640 --> 00:09:41,160
problems, we see essentially
it's a problem of limitation of

105
00:09:41,160 --> 00:09:45,640
consciousness and the
corresponding disharmony that

106
00:09:45,640 --> 00:09:51,720
arises as a result of that.
That disharmony needs to be

107
00:09:51,720 --> 00:09:55,360
reconciled.
And it can only be done if we

108
00:09:55,360 --> 00:10:02,160
each individually and then
collectively change the way we

109
00:10:02,160 --> 00:10:06,920
see things, the way we respond
and react to things, and the way

110
00:10:06,920 --> 00:10:13,760
we project our influence greater
or smaller into the world.

111
00:10:15,080 --> 00:10:23,200
So when we do this, we take up a
practice of observation, a

112
00:10:23,200 --> 00:10:30,960
practice of examination of the
motive forces, the springs

113
00:10:30,960 --> 00:10:34,880
behind our actions, and we begin
to adjust them.

114
00:10:35,320 --> 00:10:37,920
Now, people have done this for
many years.

115
00:10:39,240 --> 00:10:44,360
When they look back on their
lives as they have gone through

116
00:10:44,360 --> 00:10:49,320
all their life changes, they can
actually identify that they

117
00:10:49,640 --> 00:10:52,680
respond differently than they
used to.

118
00:10:53,280 --> 00:10:59,080
They respond in many cases with
new understanding, new

119
00:10:59,080 --> 00:11:05,840
compassion, new empathy, a
feeling of peace, a feeling of

120
00:11:07,120 --> 00:11:10,200
helpfulness, a feeling of
goodwill.

121
00:11:12,280 --> 00:11:19,920
Those things represent actions
of a new consciousness that have

122
00:11:20,120 --> 00:11:24,240
taken hold within us almost
invisibly through time.

123
00:11:25,800 --> 00:11:31,280
What we also can notice is that
as we change and we interact

124
00:11:31,280 --> 00:11:37,960
with others around us, that they
also change, that the whole

125
00:11:38,160 --> 00:11:42,120
atmosphere changes.
There are many stories of

126
00:11:42,880 --> 00:11:47,120
Rishi's who had an ashram
somewhere in the forest and wild

127
00:11:47,120 --> 00:11:51,720
beasts would lie down with lambs
and there would be harmony in

128
00:11:51,720 --> 00:11:54,120
that environment and they
wouldn't be aggressive towards

129
00:11:54,120 --> 00:11:59,040
one another.
Well, whether real stories or

130
00:11:59,120 --> 00:12:07,040
anecdotal stories, the concept
does work when we create within

131
00:12:07,040 --> 00:12:10,480
ourselves and in our
surroundings and atmosphere of

132
00:12:10,920 --> 00:12:13,680
peace and goodwill and
understanding and harmony.

133
00:12:14,240 --> 00:12:22,800
It begins to what we might say
rub off and helps others to grow

134
00:12:22,800 --> 00:12:26,560
into a new understanding and
consciousness on their own,

135
00:12:26,560 --> 00:12:32,120
without a teaching or a
proselytization or a religion or

136
00:12:32,120 --> 00:12:36,240
a philosophy.
Just by being the change.

137
00:12:37,840 --> 00:12:41,200
And that brings us to the 100th
monkey phenomenon.

138
00:12:41,760 --> 00:12:47,560
Now, the 100th monkey phenomenon
is one where a monkey was

139
00:12:47,560 --> 00:12:53,000
observed washing its fruit, a
new behavior among that tribe of

140
00:12:53,000 --> 00:12:57,040
monkeys somewhere in Southeast
Asia, I believe it was.

141
00:12:58,240 --> 00:13:03,120
And after a while, other monkeys
in that group started washing

142
00:13:03,120 --> 00:13:07,120
their fruit before eating it,
and eventually the whole group

143
00:13:07,120 --> 00:13:09,240
was washing their fruit before
eating it.

144
00:13:10,440 --> 00:13:15,440
What was interesting was that
when a certain number of monkeys

145
00:13:15,560 --> 00:13:20,520
adopted that behavior in that
one tribe, in that one place, in

146
00:13:20,520 --> 00:13:26,640
that one group, over time they
saw that the same behavior

147
00:13:27,400 --> 00:13:31,960
quickly disseminated itself
worldwide in the monkey

148
00:13:31,960 --> 00:13:36,720
population.
And so people came up with the

149
00:13:36,800 --> 00:13:42,040
idea that when there are a
certain number of individuals

150
00:13:42,440 --> 00:13:47,880
who carry out a similar
behaviour, a similar force of

151
00:13:47,880 --> 00:13:53,760
action, that that goes into the
vital or the mental atmosphere

152
00:13:53,760 --> 00:14:00,480
of the world and impacts those
who are receptive to it anywhere

153
00:14:00,480 --> 00:14:03,720
they are in the world.
And change can occur.

154
00:14:04,880 --> 00:14:10,760
And that is, in our sense, how a
change of human nature can begin

155
00:14:11,400 --> 00:14:18,600
one person at a time.
Which of us might be the 100th

156
00:14:18,600 --> 00:14:24,360
monkey in the human race to
change consciousness, to bring

157
00:14:24,360 --> 00:14:30,040
about a new understanding, to
align ourselves with the new

158
00:14:30,040 --> 00:14:33,040
consciousness that is
developing?

159
00:14:36,080 --> 00:14:41,080
One of the things we find that
occurs is that as we change our

160
00:14:41,080 --> 00:14:46,360
inner life, we also change our
outer actions and our focus.

161
00:14:47,240 --> 00:14:52,920
And while many people have jobs
and they have to earn their

162
00:14:52,920 --> 00:14:57,360
livings and they take whatever
job they can get, if you do it

163
00:14:57,360 --> 00:15:02,000
with the right spirit and
attitude, that too is part of

164
00:15:02,000 --> 00:15:07,520
the change.
But if you have the capacity, if

165
00:15:07,520 --> 00:15:13,760
you have the training, if you
have the education, if you have

166
00:15:13,760 --> 00:15:20,400
the motivation and focus to
address and tackle some of the

167
00:15:20,400 --> 00:15:28,960
larger issues that we all face
as humanity and you begin to

168
00:15:28,960 --> 00:15:34,680
apply that energy and focus to
that issue, it will have an

169
00:15:34,680 --> 00:15:38,240
effect.
We have a friend who is a an

170
00:15:38,240 --> 00:15:44,280
attorney and she works pro bono
mean she does it for free for

171
00:15:44,280 --> 00:15:50,840
nonprofits working with
governments to try to codify and

172
00:15:51,400 --> 00:15:54,640
find enforcement mechanisms for
the law of the sea.

173
00:15:55,320 --> 00:15:59,640
Because we are polluting the
oceans, we are killing off the

174
00:15:59,640 --> 00:16:03,760
ocean fisheries.
We are creating a toxic soup

175
00:16:04,760 --> 00:16:09,440
that needs to be addressed and
can only be addressed by all of

176
00:16:09,440 --> 00:16:13,080
humanity working together.
Well, she has the background and

177
00:16:13,080 --> 00:16:16,520
the capacity.
She's not a rich person, but

178
00:16:17,200 --> 00:16:21,160
she's decided to dedicate her
experience and talents to this

179
00:16:21,160 --> 00:16:30,240
issue and however difficult and
long the road is, she stuck with

180
00:16:30,240 --> 00:16:35,760
it for many years and none of us
can actually see the long term

181
00:16:35,760 --> 00:16:40,560
benefit or impact.
But over time, if we look back

182
00:16:40,560 --> 00:16:46,800
at history, we can see that such
activity does in fact have an

183
00:16:46,840 --> 00:16:51,640
outsize influence.
We can look at examples all

184
00:16:51,640 --> 00:16:55,120
through history.
We look at someone like here in

185
00:16:55,120 --> 00:16:58,680
the United States, we have a
legendary figure called Johnny

186
00:16:58,680 --> 00:17:01,760
Appleseed.
And this was a real man.

187
00:17:01,920 --> 00:17:06,280
He was a pastor, and he also ran
a nursery, and he went from

188
00:17:06,280 --> 00:17:12,400
state to state in a number of
areas and arranged to have many

189
00:17:12,400 --> 00:17:14,520
thousands of apple trees
planted.

190
00:17:15,040 --> 00:17:19,880
And he made a difference.
America has an abundance of

191
00:17:19,880 --> 00:17:21,760
apples.
People love apples.

192
00:17:21,760 --> 00:17:25,000
And as they say, an apple a day
keeps the doctor away.

193
00:17:25,640 --> 00:17:29,000
That's the proverb.
Well, we have Johnny Appleseed

194
00:17:29,000 --> 00:17:34,960
to thank for thank for his
efforts, but we have others that

195
00:17:34,960 --> 00:17:38,680
we can identify through history
because they stood out as

196
00:17:38,760 --> 00:17:44,160
outside influence in their own
field.

197
00:17:44,480 --> 00:17:51,920
Leonardo da Vinci, Mahatma
Gandhi, Abraham Lincoln,

198
00:17:53,680 --> 00:17:58,400
Beethoven, who knows?
There are many, many, many such

199
00:17:58,400 --> 00:18:03,400
examples.
But even those that we can't

200
00:18:03,400 --> 00:18:09,440
identify on the world stage can
have an outsize influence in

201
00:18:09,440 --> 00:18:15,040
their own circles.
And we find back in the 1960s,

202
00:18:15,040 --> 00:18:21,200
some work was done in sociology
to identify a concept called

203
00:18:21,600 --> 00:18:25,680
opinion makers.
And these people were

204
00:18:26,120 --> 00:18:31,400
individuals in their field or
community who, for one reason or

205
00:18:31,400 --> 00:18:37,120
another, wielded an outsized
influence on the opinions and

206
00:18:37,120 --> 00:18:43,160
actions of others around them.
Maybe it was their or maybe it

207
00:18:43,160 --> 00:18:47,360
was their ability to
communicate.

208
00:18:47,400 --> 00:18:50,280
Maybe it was their passion and
dedication.

209
00:18:51,360 --> 00:18:55,200
Maybe it was just their
essential being relating to

210
00:18:55,200 --> 00:18:58,760
people in a way that really
struck people.

211
00:18:59,880 --> 00:19:06,560
And those people, those opinion
makers, wield a much larger

212
00:19:06,560 --> 00:19:10,080
influence than being just one of
8 billion people.

213
00:19:10,960 --> 00:19:15,440
Now, this was actually put into
practice some years ago when Al

214
00:19:15,440 --> 00:19:22,520
Gore set up his climate project.
He decided that to bring climate

215
00:19:22,920 --> 00:19:27,320
change awareness to people, it
was not going to work to try to

216
00:19:27,320 --> 00:19:30,080
retail it one-on-one to 8
billion people.

217
00:19:30,080 --> 00:19:34,200
So he reached out for
influential people, people who

218
00:19:34,200 --> 00:19:40,800
had positions that would allow
them to interface with large

219
00:19:40,800 --> 00:19:46,400
numbers of people, and he showed
them the facts and the science,

220
00:19:46,680 --> 00:19:49,560
and they, in turn wielded their
influence.

221
00:19:49,800 --> 00:19:55,040
And today, humanity is finally
beginning to address the fact

222
00:19:55,040 --> 00:19:59,480
that climate change is real and
that it needs to be dealt with

223
00:20:00,800 --> 00:20:08,040
if we're going to survive.
If you can't change.

224
00:20:09,120 --> 00:20:13,160
Something on a big scale and you
do your daily work.

225
00:20:13,920 --> 00:20:18,800
There's still things you can do.
If you're not educated in

226
00:20:18,800 --> 00:20:23,600
climate change, if you're not
educated in agriculture or

227
00:20:23,800 --> 00:20:28,480
energy production or freshwater
development or any of these

228
00:20:28,480 --> 00:20:33,120
other fields where the crises
exist, you can at least identify

229
00:20:33,280 --> 00:20:38,760
and locate those individuals,
groups, and projects that are

230
00:20:39,000 --> 00:20:42,880
trying to address any one of
these numerous problems.

231
00:20:43,160 --> 00:20:48,960
Find the one or ones that
attract you and align yourself

232
00:20:48,960 --> 00:20:51,960
to them.
Help them promulgate their

233
00:20:51,960 --> 00:20:55,360
ideas.
If you have money, help them by

234
00:20:55,360 --> 00:21:01,920
giving them money and support.
Help them by your goodwill, just

235
00:21:02,120 --> 00:21:08,040
your conscious willingness to
stand for the principle that

236
00:21:08,040 --> 00:21:12,720
that organization or group is
working towards.

237
00:21:13,320 --> 00:21:17,760
And there are numerous such
groups, thousands of them around

238
00:21:17,760 --> 00:21:22,840
the world, working at smaller or
larger aspects of the global

239
00:21:22,840 --> 00:21:29,640
crisis.
So follow your heart and do what

240
00:21:29,720 --> 00:21:33,080
you know to be right.
Make it real.

241
00:21:33,560 --> 00:21:37,920
Be the change.
And that brings us actually to

242
00:21:37,920 --> 00:21:42,920
the to an interesting project
called Oroville, where people

243
00:21:42,920 --> 00:21:45,760
from all over the world, from
many different cultures,

244
00:21:45,760 --> 00:21:50,840
backgrounds, religions,
philosophies and languages,

245
00:21:51,840 --> 00:21:55,000
education, whatever have come
together.

246
00:21:55,560 --> 00:22:02,680
And they've started working as a
laboratory to tackle a large

247
00:22:02,680 --> 00:22:08,920
number of the crisis leverage
points that humanity is facing.

248
00:22:09,360 --> 00:22:14,440
How to waste less resources, how
to create desalina tion for

249
00:22:14,440 --> 00:22:21,520
freshwater, how to create green
energy and distributed

250
00:22:21,520 --> 00:22:26,400
effectively, How to create
buildings and architecture that

251
00:22:26,400 --> 00:22:33,680
are more environmentally sound
and more energy efficient.

252
00:22:35,400 --> 00:22:40,840
Numerous, numerous things.
But also, they're trying to

253
00:22:40,840 --> 00:22:47,120
figure out how to live together,
how to bring all these

254
00:22:47,120 --> 00:22:51,440
conflicting ideas and
philosophies and mindsets

255
00:22:51,440 --> 00:22:55,600
together and find a way to work
their way through it, starting

256
00:22:55,600 --> 00:23:01,720
from a basic essential goodwill,
but having all of the

257
00:23:01,720 --> 00:23:05,240
limitations and problems that
humanity is facing everywhere

258
00:23:05,240 --> 00:23:10,240
else.
Now, you can say, well, are they

259
00:23:10,240 --> 00:23:12,240
a success at that?
Well, not yet.

260
00:23:13,080 --> 00:23:20,400
The success comes through a lot
of tests, experiments, and

261
00:23:20,400 --> 00:23:23,640
opportunities.
Humanity's been trying to solve

262
00:23:23,640 --> 00:23:26,080
these problems for many
thousands of years.

263
00:23:26,480 --> 00:23:30,600
We've tried capitalism, we've
tried communism, we've tried

264
00:23:30,600 --> 00:23:33,480
democracy, we've tried
dictatorship, we've tried

265
00:23:33,480 --> 00:23:41,120
religious theocracies, we've
tried uniformity, and none of

266
00:23:41,120 --> 00:23:43,200
those things have solved the
problem.

267
00:23:43,360 --> 00:23:47,320
We can't expect Oroville in just
a few years to solve the

268
00:23:47,320 --> 00:23:50,240
problem.
But what we can see is they are

269
00:23:50,240 --> 00:23:56,600
working actively on this problem
and when they find a solution

270
00:23:56,600 --> 00:24:01,960
that doesn't work, they move and
try to find a better way.

271
00:24:03,480 --> 00:24:08,520
Now there's an apocryphal story
about the invention of the light

272
00:24:08,520 --> 00:24:16,280
bulb by Thomas Edison that when
he said at one point that he

273
00:24:16,280 --> 00:24:20,280
tried 1000 different experiments
to create a light bulb and every

274
00:24:20,280 --> 00:24:24,600
one of them failed until one
succeeded.

275
00:24:26,320 --> 00:24:30,600
Sri Aurobindo points out that
failure is the stepping stone to

276
00:24:30,600 --> 00:24:35,560
success.
As long as we don't give up the

277
00:24:35,560 --> 00:24:44,400
basic aspiration, the basic
interest in solving the crisis.

278
00:24:45,760 --> 00:24:50,200
All of the experiments, all of
the trials, all of the failures

279
00:24:50,640 --> 00:24:58,760
are part of our road to success.
Robert Oppenheimer, known as the

280
00:24:58,760 --> 00:25:05,680
father of the atomic bomb, after
he saw the dramatic impacts of

281
00:25:06,040 --> 00:25:13,760
that, he said the people of this
world must unite or they will

282
00:25:13,760 --> 00:25:18,480
perish.
And I leave you with that

283
00:25:18,480 --> 00:25:24,520
thought.
We must unite or we will perish,

284
00:25:25,880 --> 00:25:30,600
the Mother said.
Truth or the abyss.

285
00:25:33,920 --> 00:25:39,400
We are at the tipping point
where these crises can either

286
00:25:39,880 --> 00:25:48,600
destroy humanity entirely, or
where we make that evolutionary

287
00:25:48,600 --> 00:25:55,600
leap into the new consciousness
that is trying to manifest.

288
00:25:57,680 --> 00:25:58,240
Namaste.
