The Soul's Radiance Permeates and Acts Even in Unconsciousness

0:00 There is a type of radiation wave known as gamma rays that has the power to penetrate most matter. The extremely short wavelength of gamma rays allows it to penetrate atoms. High or prolonged exposure to gamma rays can cause damage to the internal organs of the body, even though we cannot see, hear, or feel them as they penetrate our material sheath and carry out their actions. Some modern medical tests, such as PET scans, use gamma rays to create imagery of the internal structures of the body. Similarly, X-rays penetrate and are used to create imagery of dense material forms. These examples show us that vibrations on the electromagnetic scale can impact material forms even if we are not aware or conscious of their action. Matter is dense and relatively unconscious compared to the more subtle and overtly energetic levels of the life force, the mind, the knowledge sheath, or the permeating presence of the original and supreme basis of consciousness known as Satchitananda.

More subtle than gamma rays, the divine consciousness completely permeates all material existence. If a being is rooted primarily in the dense physical sheath, the impact will take time to effectuate change. As the external being develops and shifts its predominant energetic levels to the more subtle sheaths, the impact can be more quickly visible and effective. Sri Aurobindo and the Mother describe the long slow process of the evolutionary progression of nature, which can take hundreds of millions or billions of years to implement and solidify a next phase of the evolutionary cycle. They indicate that the conscious and willing adherents and focusing of attention by an individual who takes up the spiritual life can dramatically speed the evolutionary development.
