The Creative Edge: Unlocking Exceptional Customer Experiences

The Creative Edge: Unlocking Exceptional Customer Experiences

I recently sat down with renowned author, speaker, and customer experience expert @Ken-Hughes on the Simply CX podcast to discuss the future of customer experience. It was a rich conversation that got me thinking about the pivotal role of creativity in crafting exceptional customer experiences.

Creativity is all about transcending traditional ideas and behaviors and finding meaningful new ones. In other words, finding a way to improve on anything is a creative act. At Microsoft we’re always looking for ways to improve customer experience. But creativity doesn't thrive in isolation; it needs a supportive culture, smart use of technology, and conscious intent.

Culture drives creativity

A company's culture can either drive or hinder creativity. At Microsoft, we have a customer-obsessed culture built on a growth mindset. That includes an insatiable curiosity and willingness to learn in every customer interaction. We understand that helping customers achieve their goals requires questioning the status quo, being open to new ideas and methods, and collaborating on creative ways to apply our technologies and services to customer needs.

As Chief Commercial Officer Judson Althoff noted recently in the Official Microsoft Blog, we partnered closely with Swedish manufacturing giant Husqvarna Group to modernize its fragmented global infrastructure. Our teams innovated together, developing Azure-based solutions tailored specifically to Husqvarna’s needs. The result is an AI-powered, future-ready business transformation that has improved supply chain management, lowered costs, and reduced downtime. As Sr. Global Process & Digitization Lead, Daniel Johansson, put it, “The close partnership allowed [Microsoft] to shape the technology around our actual operational challenges.”

AI super-charges creativity

AI is a relative newcomer to the creative process, but it’s already powering creative solutions like never before. From product design to customer support, teams are using large language models (LLMs), generative AI, and agents to innovate across customer experiences faster than ever without compromising quality.

For example, low-code tools like Microsoft Power Platform and Copilot Studio allow designers and developers to collaborate more fluidly. They also empower “citizen developers”—employees without formal coding backgrounds—to prototype ideas, build apps, and automate workflows. This democratization of the creative process enables employees from many disciplines to contribute their domain-specific insights and solutions with less friction.

AI also helps experienced developers find more creative time by generating entire software functions from natural language prompts, fixing bugs, and creating documentation. For instance, by automating code translation and generation with Azure OpenAI Service, NTT DATA Business Solutions has reduced development time and costs by as much as 70% while improving accuracy and document standardization. And at Microsoft, our developers have seen 15% efficiency gains in complex project delivery and 55% faster task completion.

One way we invest in creating great customer experiences at the nexus of technology and culture is through our annual global hackathon. This multi-day innovation fest brings together employees from around the world—more than 70,000 last year—to collaborate on ideas that can improve almost every aspect of how we serve customers. Last year’s winning project in the CX category used cutting-edge AI and machine learning to predict node and component failures in Azure—helping to prevent customer downtime before it even happens.

Intention enables creativity

Even with the right mix of culture, customer knowledge, and technology, creativity doesn’t happen unless we prioritize it. Velocity is important in our fast-paced world, but outcomes matter most when it comes to customer experience. And the ideas that drive the best customer outcomes can emerge more easily when we intentionally make time for creative thought and collaboration.

AI can assist here, too. Thousands of companies around the world are using AI to manage repetitive and time-consuming tasks that can get in the way of creativity. For example, HP sought to enhance software development efficiency to free up more time for creativity and innovation. Using the AI assistive capabilities of GitHub Copilot, developers are writing new code and updating old code faster while achieving higher levels of enterprise development-practices governance and community engagement. As Senior Manager of Enterprise Digital Services, Evan Scheessele, says, “With GitHub Copilot, our developers can focus on creating new solutions and solving bigger challenges.”

Creativity is CX magic

Ken Hughes calls creativity the “magic” of CX, and I think he’s right. The most memorable experiences aren’t built from a spec or formula. They’re first imagined and then created in the space where culture, curiosity, technology, and intention meet. When these elements align, truly exceptional customer experiences are possible. And that’s pure magic.

What are the ways your teams are tapping creativity to shape customer experience? I’d love to hear your story.
