When Struggle Becomes Your Normal: A Journey of Healing

Breaking Cycles: Jasmine’s Journey from Normalized Struggle to Healing

Childhood shapes how we see the world. For Jasmine, growing up meant learning that abuse, financial instability, and toxic relationships were simply “normal.” What she didn’t realize was how deeply those experiences would influence her own choices—and how much strength it would take to break free.

When Struggle Becomes Normal

Jasmine recalls a childhood filled with painful memories: her mother in abusive relationships, boyfriends in and out of prison, and a home where chaos overshadowed stability. These patterns became her blueprint for adulthood.

“I grew up just thinking struggling was normal in finances, in love, in relationships… until I hit rock bottom and it was so exhausting.”

The Weight of Generational Trauma

By age 14, Jasmine found herself in abusive relationships of her own. What should have been red flags looked like love—because it was the only version of love she knew. This cycle of repeating trauma reflects a broader truth: generational wounds often echo until someone decides to stop them.

Choosing a Different Future

Motherhood became Jasmine’s turning point. She wanted her children to experience the kind of safety she never had. Instead of fearing the sound of a garage door signaling conflict, her kids worry about typical childhood things like Fortnite skins.

“The fact that their kid brains can just worry about kids stuff is amazing.”

Through conscious parenting, Jasmine is rewriting the narrative for her family.

The Complicated Path of Reconnection

Healing also means confronting family relationships. Jasmine recently began reconnecting with her estranged father. Unlike her mother—who continues to deny past harms—her father has expressed regret and a desire to rebuild. That acknowledgment, however imperfect, brings a sense of peace that her mother’s silence never could.

Redefining Destiny

Despite the weight of her past, Jasmine and her siblings have created stable and successful lives. For her, resilience is both personal determination and faith at work.

“It was God’s plan.”

Her story is a powerful reminder that while we inherit cycles of pain, we also hold the power to break them—and to give the next generation something better
