Spiritual Jazz was just one of the many post-1959 innovations in Jazz, massively influenced by Eastern spiritual and African consciousness movements, Minimalism in music, and in some cases, experiments with psychedelic compounds.

The Jazz world ushered in the 1960s with a fury of innovative change. A bold avant-garde stretched the form while others made accessible and engaging records.

1959 was a transformative year in Jazz, with America on the cusp of great social change and political upheaval, and musicians starting to break away from bebop, exploring new, experimental forms that represented an awakening in jazz.

Two nations - Ethiopia and Jamaica - connected by one people, much common lore, and shared yearnings for repatriation and unification. Music is another shared connection, a spiritual and artistic dialogue. Listen.
