Why Instacart’s Caper Cart Strategy Still Isn’t Working

On this week’s Omni Talk Retail Fast Five, Chris Walton and Carter Jensen debate whether Instacart’s continued investment in Caper Carts, now powered by NVIDIA AI, is actually moving the needle or just adding more hype to a struggling concept.

Chris doesn’t hold back. He argues the strategy of capturing in store data is right, but the execution is flawed. Relying on shoppers to use smart carts creates inconsistent data collection, while simpler or more scalable solutions could achieve the same outcome without changing customer behavior.

Instead, Chris points to robotics as the real long term answer. Unlike carts, robots can consistently scan shelves the same way every time, making them far more reliable for real time inventory and data capture. In his view, Instacart may be better off rethinking its approach entirely.
