The video reports that November extended its $10 billion online grocery sales streak to five months. Sales reached $12.3 billion, which is an increase of more than $2.5 billion, or more than 28%, compared to November 2024. All three receiving methods—delivery, click and collect, and ship to home—saw sales increases last month.
Chris Walton expresses that he is "absolutely gobsmacked by this statistic". He notes that consumers are budget constrained, and logically, e-grocery sales should not be going up because it is the more expensive way to get groceries.
Chris posits that the increase is driven by a combination of factors:
Time Savings: The time saved that is given back to the consumer.
Price Transparency: The increasing level of price transparency when reordering the same items or getting in the habit of ordering them repeatedly from trusted places like Walmart, where loyalty programs are well understood.
Generational Acclimation: The general acclamation of the younger generations to online grocery.
Chris Walton believes that if this behavior is occurring now, online grocery is "going to explode" once Generative AI is integrated. He states that Generative AI will have exponential impacts, where "1 plus 1 equals 3."
