Is Agentic AI the End of the Online Checkout Page?

Stripe is betting on a future where machines purchase from machines. But is agentic checkout something retailers should be building toward now, or is it still years away from becoming a real sales channel?

Michael Prendergast of the A&M Consumer and Retail Group argues that the traditional checkout process is already on its way out. From Amazon’s Buy Now button to the ongoing push to reduce clicks and eliminate friction, the goal has always been to make purchasing easier. The bigger question is how much of that process consumers will actually hand over to AI agents and whether they’ll still want to be part of the shopping experience.
