Ulta says Flock Safety technology is about organized retail crime. Online, consumers are calling it surveillance overreach. So where should retailers draw the line?
Shelley Huff, former CEO of Serta Simmons Bedding and former Walmart executive, says retailers have a responsibility to protect both employees and customers, but they also need to be able to clearly explain the technology they deploy. In Ulta’s case, she argues the bigger problem may have been the communication strategy, especially after the retailer declined to comment publicly. The real question, she says, is what data is being captured, how long it is kept, and how clearly retailers explain that to the people shopping in their stores.
