White Dog new album Double Dog Dare recorded over a period of eight days at Stuart Sikes Audio (with engineer Andrew McCalla) in Austin “The subject matter of these songs is pretty eclectic, to be honest” notes John. “Let’s see… there’s a song about a bank heist, and another one about the Vietnam war. Then there’s one about draining an old lake! Glenn’s Tune is about Rex’s late father. Hell, we even did a radio jingle. So yeah we are kinda all over the place ha ha ha!”

01 Hi, you have done to censure? Wow, cra Young, whycoume of America. It's time for the Adventures of Pipeman. I'll you four c hy dot com. Wes Poon Beats is number one internet radio station. Here's your host, the pipe Man. This is I'm here on the Adventures pipe Man W four c Y Radio and I'm here with Marlock's guests some killer new music and we're gonna talk about today I doubled dog. Dare you not to listen?
08 So let's welcome to the show, John for my dog. How are you? I'm doing well there for having me? Are you hey? My pleasure man? So yeah, nobody that's listening what that was a reference to? But listen, you got a great new album coming out. I love the name of it. It's just it caught my attention right away. It's a double dog there and it's pretty cool because when I was listening to it, it flashed me back to when I was a kid in the seventies where they actually made good music. Well, goodness, we did our job there you go. Man. Yeah, it's like so there and there is a different sound of things, you know, not like I don't like music today.
57 I do, but I think musicianship and like, I don't know, you know, we live in a society that has this short attention span that we have to like change the way songs are written opposed the old days where you could just escape all reality in a song. And that's why I think what you guys accomplish, well, thank you, that means a lot. Yeah, I know, we, uh, we make it a point to to kind of reckon back in the days when yeah, like you said, things were, things were a little bit more I don't know, dreamy, I guess, yeah, everything moves so fast these days, but yeah, we we enjoy the old stuff, and so we kind of stick to that and keeps us going, keeps us happy. So I'm glad that you like it nice and you know what else I like too. Okay, So I was reading about this and it was true after listening to it that you know, you have all these different like subject matters that you sing about, like you're not in one specific area. It's like you're kind of play Yeah, I think, especially with this record, we we ended up having a pretty eclectic group of songs as far as uh, you know, topics of conversation or stories or whatever. But yeah, we we kind of just you know what, we make arrangements before we before we really get much into the lyrics,
28 we'll have an idea of what we want the song to be about. But you know, once we once we establish kind of the sound of the song, then we then we tend to tend to kind of throw some lyrics at it. But yeah, we it ends up and we love you know, we kind of love the process because it does end up allowing us to build it from the ground up. And yeah, we we ended up with one about a bank robbery of some an old family friend of ours that that ended up coming on the news, which is a true story. We ended up with, Yeah, with a with a pretty eclectic group of songs and topics. Like I said, but yeah, it's fun. That's the point. It's making things fun or funny or cool or interesting or whatever. You know. Yeah, I mean listen. I think that's also a nod to old school too, because like a lot of old school bands, they didn't write about all the same things. They just you know, they were experiences in life or things that were happening in the news, or things that were happening and didn't have to be one specific thing. So it's kind of like, yeah, for me, it was like getting my news from music instead of the news, because the news is BS. Go. Yeah, I try not to watch SUSS. It's depressing as hell. Yeah, no doubt.
46 We all get along really well too, and you know, like we we laugh. We were friends before anything, and so we're always laughing, joking and usually more often than not. That's where the material kind of comes from, as far as lyrics and stuff that matter. And I want to know about the one where this came from the origination about draining an old lake. Okay, so yeah, that's an interesting one. It's it's called Last Dance Song. And it actually we went back into the studio because we finished track in what we thought was going to be the B side of the record, and you know, it had had kind of moved on and sent sent most of it all for mixing and mastering and everything, and we started fiddling around and ended up like in the new the new stuff we were working with so much that we thought, man, we gotta we got to try and add this on the on the record. And and the story comes from, uh, actually I do landscaping and we do a lot of properties on lakes and lake towns and rivers, you know, like more resort towns and vacation towns. So they were getting ready to drain this lake that had been been filled in the nineteen seventies. And long story short, the River Authority here in Texas was having trouble with some of the damns on the same same same area because they were old and they were failing. So down the road, Lake Dunlap failed and mcqueeney was next. They were built in the same year,
16 and so they decided that they were going to drain. You know, my brother and I Carl, who's also in the band, we work out there, and so we were watching all these pretty well to do folks and they're in their vmw's sitting sitting by the lakeside while they were draining it. And we saw some people crying and call thought, man, this is this is kind of a kind of like a I guess it'd be a good subject matter for a song. And you know, so we ended up right and then calling it the Last Damn Song, and so naturally it had to be the last song on the record. But yeah, all kind of thank you. I mean, that's kind of cool. I almost think people don't get that creative any more, like that, you know, like that to me, that's creativity. Thank you. Yeah, well, you know, I think we kind of surprise ourselves this time around from you again the subject matter, because we it kind of you know, when you when you when you're being creative, it's you can kind of throw paint at the wall, and it can and for some people it can be a bit too vast of h a canvas, I guess you could say. But we're fortunate in the fact that we all trust each other, and we all make each other laugh, we all think, you know, pretty similarly, and so yeah, usually when we come up with something, even if it's you know, a rough, rough idea or something that's kind of vague, we're able to build on it together and say, hey man, this would be funny if we we
46 said this, what about that? You know. So it's like we're we're blessed to have each other and also blessed in the fact that our our our creative minds are very in tune with each other. And and that makes it you know, to be honest with you being, and that that makes it uh special for us, you know, it wouldn't you know, anybody can go play music in a group. But we've, like I said, we've been longtime friends and college friends before before this all kicked off. And so yeah, we we count our lucky stars for each other and the music that we're able to create together. I think that's so important. I think that's like the most important thing. I like how you said college friends, because I think there's a huge difference between college friends and high school friends. Like you're in high school, you form a band with your high school friends, and a lot of times that doesn't work out too well. I said that.
37 Yeah, right, yeah, we all went down that route right exactly. I told my kids, you know, when it came to going to college, I'm like, listen, the place you're going to make your lifelong friends is in college, not high school. I mean, yeah, it's so true. You couldn't you couldn't see. I couldn't agree more with you. It's yeah, we we you know, we were all also who grew up in different communities. But you know what brought us together originally was we were in the school and music all of us and and uh yeah, and naturally, like we were the only other kids that was like were wearing bell bottoms and that whole thing. So we were easy to spot each other.
18 And you know, it started off very organically, you know what I mean, like kids college for new damn friends and coming from small towns around and yeah, it's like a friendship sparked into you know, like you know, I guess eight years nine, shit, I guess it's been ten years. Ten years later, here we are traveling around the country together making dumb songs. Yeah. Man, well it is so true though, because you know, I was just thinking about it when we were talking about like, so when you're in high school, you're forced to be with the all these people that baby aren't on the same path and life. And then when you go to colle pretty much most of the people going that you meet are there are on the same path in life. Because usually when you go to college, you're not hanging out with different people from different majors. It's usually people that are within the same areas that you're looking at. And I think that's what creates long terms. Absolutely, I agree with you, you know, beyond that, I think you know, the older you get, you start realizing, you know, it's okay to hang out with everybody, but you kind of start being more selective with who you hang out with, and I guess kind of find your crowd more so more or less, I guess, you know. But yeah, we definitely I thrived and after I got out of high school. You know, I grew up in a small town of four thousand people in Texas, so it's a it was even going to you know, the university town a couple of hours away, was like, you know,
52 I felt like I was in New York City, right, which I wasn't. It's so funny how works like that, because like, uh, one of my one of my favorite bands who's friends of mine since the very begaining Armored Saint Me Me, Me and Joey were talking one time a couple of years ago, and he was like, because I lived out in a Gora Hills and they lived on in Pasadena, and one time I had them come out like to a Goora. It was like it was the first time we were ever even out of our zip code. It was like as if we were going to another country. Yeah, I mean absolutely, yeah, You're You're a small fish in a big bond at that point, exactly, no doubt. So here's the one I loved the most though, because only because I laughed when I read this before I even listened to the music.
46 But since I'm a radio personality, I love that we even did a radio jingle. Man right on, Yeah, I put that together. We have fun doing that. We laughed our asses off. Yeah it was it was it fun. And again started from stupid jokes. We were I think somebody's on Facebook, marketplace or something, and I was and and again I mow grass, but I was showing these the guys, all these like you know, nineteen eighties mowers and still run good, and look how cheap it is. And and somebody, I think my brother Carl, who usually sparks a lot of the ideas, He's like, we should do a radio jingle, and all of us are like, set the hell up, like laughing off a bit. But yeah, then I mean it just ended up happening.
37 And again, like kudos to the guys. They and that's why we all love playing together. And everything is because you know, like even if even if maybe one person has a doubt, there might be two or three other people that are hurt, Like hey, no, I'm dead ass serious, we're doing this you know what I mean. So and then like you know, so whether you whether you take it serious or not, which to me it was a joke. And I came back in there and we're still reluctant to do it, but they talked me into it. But then they start playing it for me and the cheesy organ and shipp and I'm going, I'm all right, like you know what I mean, like, let's do this. So it was. It was a fun one beyond beyond fun. I love it because like I go on tour and I do radio coverage at festivals and you wouldn't believe how many bands I interview that they'll try and impress me by doing the radio voice interview and we just laugh about it. Man.
30 I want to say we gave a couple of people, uh I believe Rex and Rex and Rex and Carl both gave it, gave it a shot to do the you know him seeing, but uh it ended up being Oscar working working guy that that really sold us. I got funny story for you on that note, Like, Okay, so I met some woman on an online and then we talked on the phone and she's like, oh, I didn't expect you sound like that, and I'm like, well, what does that mean, because it's a my profile them a radio personality. She goes, well, I expected you to sound more like you're on the radio, kid, And she goes, can you give me your radio voice? I'm like, this is my radio voice. I don't make up a different voice.
22 Yeah. Yeah, I don't have like an alter ego here. That's so funny. I guess some people probably do. But no, you, I think you should stick with you right exactly. No, yeah, And I think that's true music too, Like what you guys are doing. I think the best bands are just true to themselves. They play the music that they want to play, a post of what other people want to play, because then you're authentic and it glows the questions that when it comes to you know, I think I speaking for myself, but I'm I'm sure the only guys.
09 But music is probably the most selfish thing I do. Uh, you know, I do it for me and for my people, you know, I I and I firmly believe that if an artist is doing something to appease someone else who or to to to paint a picture that's not actually authentic then and that's the biggest disservice they could do themselves. And again that you know, maybe I'm what do I know? I just play rock and roll, But yeah, right, I can't imagine not not not doing something that makes me happy. I think it's a discern and disservice to themselves and to the people listening, to be honest, because you can tell, you can tell if people are just going through the motions or making it up, or if they're just being them you know. Yeah, well, I can guarantee you that anything we do is gonna come from the heart, and we're gonna do it because we like it. We're not going to ever be courced in any corner or expected to sound a certain way. I mean, you know, in a lot of ways, it's sometimes we we we we if we anything, we'll question ourselves as far as you know, is it gonna be okay with everyone else? But you know, like we're on a pretty pretty heavy label. There's a lot of a lot of heavy bands and involved with what you know, our our rise above family. But we fly our you know, seventies rock and rolls if he mustache flag, you know, as high as we can fly it. And we're not We're not gonna We're not gonna change our sound or become something because it might be easier, or get us more fans or make someone else happy, you know, so to speak,
42 Yeah, we do it. We do it for us and that's never gonna change. I love it, And I also love that you're in a band with your brother because I have three brothers and not one of them. Would I even want to go to a concert with much less being a band with yeah, well, identical twins. I don't know if they if there, if there's that much information on it, but you can kind of look at the band pictures and photos and put it together. Yeah, I know it's uh, he's He and I have been close from from the jump, so it's pretty naturally. People that know us, they're like, of course you're a damn band to get everything together, But yeah, no, it's it's it has it has way more ups and downs. I'll say that I love I love it, And do you mess with people too? Like, because you're like that question more than anything. I'm sure I alboustand why I ask it, but I had to know you're no, I don't. I don't mind to be honest with you, know, we really, I've been confused.
45 I've been confused as another person for the better part of my life. So I don't want to I don't want to like add to anyone's confusion or or mislead anyone, you know, Like, yeah, no, but I think back in the day we did we did some stuff. We had to make a speech that I learned and Carl didn't learn. So you caught me in the hallway after school and got me to put his shirt on and go do a Julius Caesar speech. But the whole damn school found out and we got in trouble. So I think that was probably enough for me to be like, screw this ship. Yeah right, I'm gonna me, man, there you go. I love it. Now, let's tell everybody how they can connect to you guys from socials on the web, and most importantly, how they can get the new album and all that good stuff and merch whatever.
37 Absolutely. Yeah, So White Dog USA on Instagram, I believe it's the same for our Facebook. There's a Facebook link on our Instagram as well. We have a link tree that you can click and kind of see all the shows that are going on and some pre sale tickets. Yeah, we're going on tour. I believe we're leaving the sixteen. We're gonna be going out west from Texas and hitting a couple of spots on the way. We have a few California shows set up. We'll have some T shirts. As far as buying the record goes, it's gonna be out April fifth right now, free sale is up on Rise Above Records dot com. You can also find that in a link on our Instagram bio and yeah, I believe there they may they may be only still doing pre sale for the Diehard Edition, which is a I guess it's a little bit more extensive package. But yeah, it's it's gonna be out April fifth. We've worked really hard on it and we're proud of it, so helping hoping people enjoy it. You can also we have a new music video out on YouTube for the Holy or for the track Holy Smokes, which is also on the new record. Yeah, I think that's that. That kind of covers it.
