On this episode of the Adventures of Pipeman, Pipeman is joined by the Ries Brothers, a musical duo comprising Kevin and Charlie, at the Shaky Knees festival. Charlie expresses his excitement at being part of the festival's incredible line-up, having followed it for the last ten years. Pipeman commends them for sticking it out in the music industry, stating that it usually takes about twenty years to become an overnight success. When asked about their music, Charlie explains that they grew up playing classic rock and blues covers and then progressed to writing their original music. They describe their music as rock and roll, blues rock, and jam rock, with a mix of high energy and chill songs. They try to create a unique vibe at their shows, and being a two-piece band, they aim to make each song interesting and not let anyone get bored in the crowd. To achieve this, they bring in different instruments such as ukulele and melodica. Kevin describes their music as high-energy with a bit of reggae influence. He grew up listening to a lot of old school reggae, and this sets them apart from other bands. They throw in a little bit of reggae vibe, being from Florida. Overall, they are a heavy rock band, and the crowd at the festival loves their heavy blues rock stuff. Charlie and Kevin are from St. Pete, Florida, and their manager is from Boynton Beach. Pipeman is based in South Florida, near West Palm, and he shares his connection with the Ries Brothers' manager. They are currently working on new music, trying to keep their high-energy vibe and incorporating their reggae influence. They are thrilled to be performing at the festival and grateful for the opportunity to showcase their unique style to a broader audience. The Adventures of...
04 Hey, you love them too? Sure, I'm come, I'm you see why for you? Wake up America. It's time for the Adventures of Pipe Man on W four CWY dot com. West pomp Beach is number one internet radio station. Here's your host, the White Man. We gotta go. We gotta no scene. As you were me, you don't he goes vers go this on me movie. This is is the pipe Man here on the Adventures MANW four CY Radio. And I'm here with brothers. I'm Charlie, I'm Kevin Nice here at shaking these How does it feel to be here?
08 Oh? Incredible? I've I've been checking this lineup out for literally last ten years, since ten years every year comes out, you know, since going back to when I was a kid, and like one day we'll be there because every years the laps incredible and uh finally happened this year, so we're couldn't be a winor to be here and here you are? Yeah, how about that? That's pretty cool that now, see that's a cool story because like that's what it's all about, right, Yeah, how many artists like don't even make it to that point, meaning like they that I was talking about this earlier like you really have to keep going in this business. You know, I've said before and other people say it. In the industry, it takes about twenty years to become an overnight success. Yeah for real.
57 So like, kudos to you for sticking out, keep going, and then yeah, your goals met here you are absolutely yeah, and it's yeah, like you said, it's you gotta kind of take a step back because like it's like every bands always want to get bigger and bigger. But like at a certain point, like you did accomplish some things, you have to look back and say, hey, we are we are here, like this is awesome, and then let's let's celebrate and then let's go back to work. You know, yeah, totally. Yeah. So how would you guys describe your music to our listeners? Not the sense of a genre, because I hate that that just boxes artists in. I'd like to hear the artists describe what their music's about. Two people. So like we came out of we come from Saint Pete, Florida, and I grew up loving classic rock and blues. Kevin's a big reggae fan, so we kind of in our early days, you know, we combine those sounds, and we started when I was like freshman high school. He was like seventh grade. We started playing local bars and playing classic rock covers and reggae covers, a lot of sublime stuff, and you know, learning how to we're play in front of crowds, and then starting to write our own music. So our our original stuff came out of that, uh, that world of playing the bar circuit in Florida and playing covers of our favorite artists. And then we had to kind of you know, retool and as we kept touring and be like, all right, now, what is our sound going to be? You know, we can't just keep playing other people's music. Yeah, and uh and just high energy, but we also have some some some chill music. It's you know, I guess to put you know, if we were going to say
27 genre rock and roll, blues rock, jam rock. But besides that, it's just we wanted to create a completely unique vibe at our shows. And we just brought in a third so we're a trio now, but for a while we were just a duo. So we had to say, how can we fit as much into our stat as possible just being a two piece? So how can we make each song interesting and not let anyone get bored in the crowd. So we're bringing out ukulele. He plays electric ukulele, he plays melodica, you know, and yeah, so what do you think about the Yeah, everything he described is completely accurate. Definitely high. That's like we're going for. We have a bit of a break right now. We're all roads, so we're gonna work on a lot of new music and trying to keep that high energy energy vibe because that's what you know, we noticed today, like the crowd is going crazier in our our our heavy stuff, like our heavy blues rock stuff. So that's what we love to play live.
16 Now. You definitely want to keep that going on the on the records as well. M We do have a little bit of a reggae influence as well, because I grew up listening to a lot of old school reggae, So we kind of that kind of sets us apart a little bit. You know, we throw a little a little bit of reggae vibe. Being from Florida too. Yeah, totally overall heavy rock because I'm in South Florida, so I knew exactly what you meant near West Palm perfect. Yeah, yeah, boying Beach arm managers from there. Oh really not too far away? Oh oh yeah, I think Oh yeah, we were talking earlier and said del Ray, yeah you used to live yep. So that Yeah, that's kind of cool. Yea. So we're playing out Boca coming up in June. Really yep. What's the day, one seventeenth? Yeah, Crazy Uncle Mics Invoker, Ratil, Florida. I know, Crazy coming out a great time. Nice And I'm looking at your necklace there, did I am?
09 I reading it right at Peace? Yeah, you're the first one. I swear you're the first one who got this. I bet you. A bunch of people were like, whoof that? Yeah, while you were at some boy. Yeah, it's actually this is like almost ten years ago. Someone came to a show and he handmade both of us in a necklace out of metal and it's world at Peace. And I kept wearing it ever since because it means a lot to me. Love it. Never took it off, So yeah, very cool. And that definitely goes with the reggae vibe right there. I love the blending of genres nowadays. I talk about it all the time because I come from a time where that didn't happen and there were gatekeepers and that. Yeah, and what has happened and a lot of genres nowadays that don't blend is that they all sound the same. The only way to get a unique sound, I think is by lending people's interests and the genres and stuff and creating your own sound because most people have very diverse music taste. Most people don't listen to only one John right, So exactly if you can showcase that in your in your style, you know, I think people appreciate it absolutely. So one story good or bad in this whole musical journey, since since you're young, what would it be? So it's kind of a funny story. We're playing Cali Roots Festival in Monterey, California.
31 Yeah, when you know, I've I've, like he said about Shakingese, I've been looking up to that festival for a while. So we we're at the hotel we're supposed to play at we like early set time at eleven am. So we're leaving the hotel and I guess Charlie put one of his his keyboard bags in the backseat and the door wasn't closed all the way. So we pull onto the highway, door opened, all of our gear comes tumbling out onto the road. Oh luckily there was no one coming, like it was an MP you wrote at that time. So we stopped, pulled over, had to pick up all our gear, got to the festival, had to plug everything in nature. It was all fine, and it was fine. But that's lucky. That was a scary moment for us. Yeah, one of our first ever music festivals. And then so I'll be on the way there and see your keyboard on the highway in the rear view mirror.
17 Yeah, no, no, that I would lose my ship if that happen. We were Unfortunately, nothing broke. Yeah, I can't believe that. That's wild. Like I was expecting it to be a disaster when you started saying it falling out, you know, I'm like, oh my god, a show canceller if you didn't ever stuff, But yeah, somebody was watching over you. Yeah, do you think so? Yeah? Yeah? So what else do you have coming up in the future? And you know what do we want to tell people about that they need to look out for. Yeah. So we just put out a single a couple days ago called Strange Times. It's our second single of the year. We're gonna have an EP out later in the summer, but right now, the focus is the big summer tour. It's our second time doing a club headline tour nice and we're starting. It's June fourth through July fourteenth. It's everywhere in the Midwest, southeast, Northeast, and then the Colorado as well. So if you're in any of those areas, we'd love to see you at a show. We've got some great we're using great local openers on all the shows, and we'll just be coming and we're gonna bringing a great time to your town. Everyone's welcome. We just want everyone to have an amazing time, and we know, you know, it means so much to us because we know the hassle of taking time out of your night coming out to a show, finding parking, doing getting a babysit or whatever. So we're just so we're so happy that people come that we, you know, one hundred percent reciprocate that appreciation.
43 So we just have a good time with people when they come. That's the way it should be. Like, you're in the wrong business if you're not have a good time, because this is not a business to not have fun and have a good time because everything else could suck exactly. And if you come hang out the show, like we hang after the set at the merch and we agree. Every single person that comes in and just say thanks for coming, that's way cool too. I love that, and people love that, you know, they love when you're approachable. Like some of my best memories are hanging out with bands when I was a teenager and they were just totally cool exactly, you know, and you know, when they're untouchable. I think there's something that also it's like you kind of like don't like them as much when they're untouchable type of thing because you remember that for you know, for that impression forever, you know. Yeah, totally. So now that you're here at Shaking means now that the goals fulfilled? How if you liked it? How it's the experienced been incredible? I mean, first of all, the lineup is amazing. We got to come in Friday night, and so we hung out all day yesterday. Um, it's just yeah, it's been insane. So we just did some shows at three eleven and we just did their cruise U Yeah, so getting to see them again it was awesome. We got to know some of their crew like their guitar tech.
03 Well, so we're hanging out them backstage and got seasonacious last night. Yeah, that was that was fun, right, fine, Like in middle school we were watching that their movie and like you know, as as aspiring musicians and it's just a great, funny music movie. And and full circle that our careers led us to a place where we get to see them live. It's really really cool, and we just love the vibe out here. It's just great people out here and great music and it's it's rock and roll and it's it's just it's just fun, you know, and so it's a pleasure to be here. Nice. So what band or artist was your first introduction to music? I mean, I guess this is common with a lot of musicians, but the Beatles were the first that my my dad introduced us too. From then I went and fell in love with the Doors and that kind of shaped our sound in a way because what we do on stage is Kevin handles all the string instruments and then I played drums and I played keyboard bass so with my left hand, and then while I sing. That enables us to you know, the sound to have a bottom because When we started, we couldn't find a basis. I couldn't find someone our age who I'd like the drive, and we really wanted to do this for a living.
13 Yeah, so I'm like, I'll cover the baselines until we find somebody, and then it just stuck, you know. But so they were the first, you know, Beeles and Doors, and then eventually you know, Chili Peppers, Nirvana, The Smiths, John Mayer, Black Keys, and then Kevin Spig. Uh. Yeah. So I love that the story of like each artist leads you on to another artist. Yeah. Yeah. Like so Jack Johnson for me was like really early age. It is one of my biggest influences for songwriting. Email Leeds playing another festival and in South Florida this weekend. That's check this out. Yeah, just check check this out. I'm literally like five minutes from that festival and I came here for shaking me.
56 Yeah. Yeah, you did play sun Fast SunFest in twenty eighteen. That's your vibe too. SunFest is kind of your vibe. So, like you know, being I was probably seven or eight when I discovered Jack Johnson and then that led to he did a cover of Badfish by Sublime. Yeah, that led me to Sublime, and then that led me do the whole reggae scene. And but Jack Johnson still always my number one influence for sure getting started with playing guitar and songwritings. He's just amazing at what he does. Nice, Yeah, Buckethead my favorite guitar player of all time. Cool, so very underrated. Well, it's funny that you say lead to another because that this guy happened to me too, like it happens to everybody.
37 For me, it started with Kiss when they first came out. First album I ever owned. I won at the Jersey shore Boardwalk. It was the first Kiss album when it first came out. Then when my friends, I don't know what was it like first or second grade, was doing an oral report in class on the Beatles. So I became this huge Kiss freak and Beatles freak, Like my wall was half Beatles half Kiss. Now it's cool about that that most people don't realize is they were actually very similar in a lot of ways, not necessarily the music, but so like with the Beatles, anything John or Paul wrote, it was always John and Paul Kiss.
26 Anything Gene or Paul wrote, it was always Gene and Paul and then whoever wrote a song sang the song. Like Ringo would sing his songs, Peter Chris would sing his songs, Ace would sing his songs, George Harrison would sing his songs. So there was a lot of similarity there. And when you tell people that, they're like, that's weird because they're just looking at the looks, you know, but if you look at all of things. So that led me. The Beatles, led me to Zeppelin, That led me to Black Sabbath. Yeah, that led me to Metallica and Slayer. Yeah, you know, and I like the idea too, like you're saying about the reggae and the classic rock. To me, I think they go hand in hand. Yeah, okay, Like I mean, who doesn't like Bob Marley as an example exactly, Like if you don't like Bob Marley or something wrong with you, I don't care what genre you're into, you know.
24 Yeah, our grandpa only listened to like country and an oldies and he had a Bob LCD and he'd played that all the time, exactly. I think it just goes hand in hand. And you know, a lot of classic rock has other things in it. Like you take Zeppelin or to Beatles, they were multiple genres. Yeah, Like the Beatles were pretty much experimented in every genre. Yeah. The Grateful Dead did it too, you know. So it's like it's just normal, you know. And so it goes hand in hand with what you're saying. One leads to the other, and like you before, we all have these different music tastes. It's not just one thing, right exactly. You know. So I love that you guys are like that. Yeah, and you guys are badass. How's everybody connect to you guys on socials? On the web? How they get your new album by merch all that good stuff everything our website Reese Brothers dot com, r i Ees Brothers dot com. All our merchandise, all our tour dates are on there.
