On this episode of the Adventures of Pipeman, Pipeman speaks to Derek and Gary from The Guess Who. Pipeman tells the story of how he first heard of The Guess Who, through his older brother’s album. He expresses his admiration for musicians that continue to come up with new material that is both good and fresh, and that’s exactly what he sees with their new album. Pipeman asks Derek and Gary to tell us about the new album and what people can expect from it. Derek explains that the new album was a conscious effort, made with the aim of capturing the band’s camaraderie in the recording. He further explains that the band was together for six days in one place, which was a wonderful experience. Gary explains that Derek is responsible for writing and producing the album, and it took him 60 years to get the band together to play this kind of music. He is thrilled to be associated with someone so talented that must be heard by the rest of the world. Derek adds that some of the songs were challenging, and they talked about doing stuff with difficult arrangements, but they just went for it. The band’s passion and love for music and each other come out in their music. Pipeman acknowledges that not all bands are fortunate enough to have such a strong bond after working together for so long. He admires their respect for each other, which comes through in their music. Pipeman concludes by thanking Derek and Gary from The Guess Who for being on his show, saying he is looking forward to hearing more from them in the future. Pipeman in the Pit is a music and interview segment of The Adventures of Pipeman Radio Show...
04 Hey, you love them too, that's sure, I'm come. I see why for you. Wake up America. It's time for the Adventures of Pipeman on W four so why dot Com West pom beats number one internet radio station. Here's your host, the White Man Sandem. This is the pipe Man here on the Adventures NW four cy Radio. And I'm really excited about our next guest because it brings me back to the beginning of me even listening to music, and I hear some new music today by this band, and oh my god, it's it's incredible, like absolutely amazing. It just gets better and better. So, with no further ado, let's welcome to his show.
26 Derek and Gary from the Guess Who How are you good? Are you? Yeah? I'm the Pipe Man And you know, it's funny the way I first heard about your band. I was a little kid because I'm fifty six now, okay, So my older brother who's eleven years older than me, he I used to go and sneak and steal his albums, and so that's how I first heard the guests who was by stealing one of my older brother's albums and listening to it. It's an uncommon story. Right, I'm sure not. And it's amazing to me. Okay, you got this new music out, and I'm always in awe of musicians that can be doing this, and you guys have been now doing this like forever and still come up with new material as not only good, but fresh and relevant of today.
23 And that's exactly what I see with this new album. That's a nice thing to say, thank you, my pleasure. So tell us a little bit about the new album and you know what was the creativity behind it and what people can expect from it, either people that have been longtime fans or new fans that we're going to get. Now, go ahead, me, I want to hear what you say. Well, how about the new album? Well, what I say about is it me sixty years to get this band together to be able to play this kind of music. And of course Derek is a is the driving force behind this, since he is responsible for writing and producing this album. It's incredible that this late in my career that I've you know, Derek and I have been together approaching twenty years now, but to be associated with someone so talented that that must be heard by the rest of the world. And that's my job. Well, that's a nice thing to say. I was going I was going to add to that though, that we we did. We you know, we did make a conscious effort to do this one altogether, number one, because we figured if we were
55 all together then then because we actually do have a good time together, believe it or not, even though we live in we live in different places. So I feel like I can hear the camaraderie on the record compared to some of the other recordings we've done where we've had to do things remotely, not because we didn't want, not because we wanted to, but just because for financial reasons or availability or this or that. But this, this particular record, we were we were together for six days in one place in the middle of nowhere, so there was nowhere to go, so we had to live with each other and it was It was a wonderful experience. So it's kind of like, first of all, it's old school, but it's kind of like either you're getting at the end of that six days, you're even they're gonna make the best music there is, or you're gonna kill each other one or the two I got. At all, we were we were thrilled because we had just come up with all of that stuff and some of the songs were really challenging, and we challenged ourselves and we talked about doing stuff with this this, you know, these kind of difficult arrangements, and we were thinking, you know, how are we going to do this live? And should we do this? We just went for it and then we went to a show right after we finished recording. We flew all across the country the Sacramento to play nice. It is so great to hear bands that have been doing this for so long and people like you guys working together for so long,
29 to still have such passion about it and such love for the art and the music, but also of each other in the respect of each other. That's not always the case, as you know, in this business. Well for sure, yep, but you gotta let it. Just let it be. I mean, it is what it is. And we're all musicians. We all love music, we all love life, and we love each other, and that's that's what should come out in your music. And I hope, I hope that's let people get out of it. I think they will, because I know when I listen to it, that's what I think of that and with way society as a whole is right now, I think there's nothing better than the music you have on this new album to make us feel good, make us feel joy, and make us feel love. And this album is, in my opinion, probably one of your best you guys ever did And I think that's cause it a camaraderie. I'm really happy you said that because you basically got exactly what we were trying to do, and you articulated really well. So I mean, you just explain the whole project in a hole. Yes, the world doesn't need more music, and you know we need we need to come together, we don't need to be divided.
51 Yes, right, and music is the one thing that does bring people together. So that's why not use that as your vehicle? Absolutely, And you're right because to me, music's first of all, one of the best therapies there is. But second of all, when you go to a concert or you go to a music festival or anything like that, the common theme is togetherness and that is what's beautiful about music. Yeah, I'm I'm sitting here stunned because we've been doing a lot of interviews in Today and and you just you just nailed it. So, yeah, that's that's impressible. Well it it means that what we did is translating in a way that that that that you know, somebody is getting it. We hope the audience. I hope the audience has the same it has the same effect on them. Well, I thank you for the great compliment, because you know, that's always good stuff to hear from my point inside. Also, you know, because you know, press is not always the funnest for artists. So when artists are like really passionate about and thinking, did good as like the best compliment ever?
09 And yeah, I do get it, And we couldn't We couldn't use this album at a better time than now, for sure. So let's tell everybody right now also how they can get planned more. You know, it's put out by Deco Entertainment. It's going to be released on June thirtieth. Are there ways that they can like pre save it or any pre sales or anything. Let's let's give them all the intel. Well, what I know as of now is they'll be setting up ways to buy it online. It's going to go into some record stores. I don't know if I imagine the digital version will come out first, because vinyl takes a long time to manufacture.
54 But there's going to be a lot of information in the coming weeks about it on the social media, so I would say to check you know, the you know, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, all of all of those things, because we have a wonderful pr company we're working with and they'll have it all together. They are. It's important to know that there are eight cuts on the album and we're putting out eight videos. Yeah, you will see them over the course of the next I don't know how long these videos. There's there's two out now and there will be six more.
35 Yep. Oh that's killer. And definitely everybody should check out your website to guess Who dot com, Decco Entertainment dot com. There's even a section on Deco Entertainment the Guess Who that they can check out. Plus I got I have to talk about the artwork in the album because that's something that I'm very into it. As you know, you know, we're all pretty much old school, and you know, I kind of miss all of the whole experience of an album. You know, it's it's not just a song, it's everything goes again, and man, the artistry on that album cover, which is the thing I looked at first, was amazing. Like back in the day when we were young, how did you buy an album? You usually didn't hear it. You saw the album cover and you're like, man, that's cool, I want that. Well that's the feeling I got from your new album. Well we didn't. That kind of came after when we started working with Deco. Charlie at the label had was friends with Janis Vesilopolis who had done he had worked with the Almond Brothers and six and then yeah, the list goes on and on. He's he's an artist and a painter, and I was just when as soon as I saw his work, I was familiar with some of the records, you know. We sent it around, We sent it around to everybody, and we said, this guy wants to work with us. He had heard the songs and he and he had he was really passionate about it, so it was a no brainer for us.
03 I think everybody was like, yeah, let's ow it. Oh god, yes, I love it. It's it's amazing. I mean, I can't believe our luck. Sure, well, you know, sometimes it takes a little bit of luck, takes skill and luck you need. I think you need both components, and you definitely have both here and you're on tour. That's another thing too, Like I kind of say it about a lot of bands I think that have been around for a long time. I don't think that any musician wants to stop touring. That's a true musician, because there's no better feeling for the audience or the musician, in my opinion, and than live music. Am I right? Absolutely, That's why I'm still doing it at I'll be i'bably turning seventy eight in next month and it's more difficult for me now. But it's a drug to be able to go on stage and make people feel happy. I mean, I don't know any other way to put it. It's something that you you It makes you feel like you're a healer in a way. Yeah, you know what you absolutely are.
13 Yeah, oh, no doubt about it. You know. That's why you know, you have these people in the audience like they just you're It's like you're when you write a good song, you're just speaking to them and literally that wasn't what you set out to do, but that's what a good song is. And then they feel it inside, And I don't know, I get chills when I'm at concerts or festivals where the whole crowd is singing the whole song along with the artist. I mean, it's and I imagine being the artists that that has to give you chills when you're sitting up on stage and you see the sea of people singing your lyrics. Yeah, that happens a lot. And even with the new songs, like we've been playing Planned to Moore for over a month now and every night they sing along with it everything they and half of them don't even know the song because it just came out. That's amazing. You gotta love that. You gotta love that, you know, Yeah, and it's a testament to your musicianship and artistry because that's not always the case. Like a lot of times people they just want to hear the old stuff that they know, that they're familiar with. So it's to me it's the biggest compliment to the artist when they're sitting there singing your new stuff. For when you've been doing as long as you guys have that that that says something about the new music for sure. But you have to remember one thing, you know, because we never stop touring. And Gary was saying earlier, it's just like think we talk about a tour,
45 we just yeah, we don't have a spring tour and a winter tour and the reunion tour. We're on tour period. I mean yeah, somebody calls and said, you're going. That's it. We're going. Yeah. So as a result of that, our band is is And this isn't egotistical to say this, but it's a well oiled machine just because we play some so often together, so our presentation, no matter what is going to be, is always getting better and better and better. We refine things as we go, so so a big element of doing old music and new music together is the presentation of it as well, not just the playing. So we have a whole show behind it. I love it. Everybody needs to go your website, check out all the tour dates, because you're on tour now and and perpetually on tour, but you definitely got the tour going on now.
46 It's that's you've named a great thing. We're going to call ourselves the perpetual tour. Yeah, there you go. I love it. I love it. You know that's exactly just keep going. You don't even need to unpack, right, No, I don't, we don't. We don't. In a second. I have a bedroom and my suitcase stays open and all I do is take stuff out and put stuff back in. It stays like that all the time. Oh, I love it. I do everything. I know that feeling too, because I go on tour and I do like radio coverage at music festivals all over to the US, UK and Europe, and same for me. It's like and then my daughter when my daughter, she's like, Dad, I don't know how you do this every single weekend, And I'm like, I don't know how. I wouldn't. Like I get home, I'm kind of depressed because I like, there's nothing going on.
48 I love it exactly. It's what music's all about. That's what the guess Who is all about. And man, this new album, everybody's gotta go get it. Check it out. Go to the Guessoo dot com.
