On this episode of the Adventures of Pipeman, Pipeman speaks to Sean Smith of The Blackout and Sappenin' podcast, as well as Uncle Raiders. The conversation starts with some banter about Sean's lesser-known band, Uncle Raiders, and his stylish sunglasses. They discuss The Blackout's reunion and how it came about after the band split up eight years ago. Sean shares that the other band members had children, and the band decided to do more shows while their fan base was still active. They successfully organized a reunion show and even did a warm-up show in their hometown, which sold out in just 53 seconds.
Pipeman and Sean talk about their experiences with other bands in the industry. They mention how some well-known bands, like Metallica and My Chemical Romance, are surprisingly down-to-earth and humble. They also discuss the dynamic of ego in the music industry and how some bands with moderate success can develop inflated egos, while others remain grounded. Sean shares anecdotes about his interactions with bands like Sum 41 and New Found Glory, emphasizing that even famous musicians are just regular people.
The conversation takes an interesting turn when they discuss My Chemical Romance's reunion show and its significance as one of the first major gigs in the UK after the COVID-19 pandemic. Sean highlights the cultural impact of the event and how it brought communities of fans together. They also reflect on the importance of live music and its ability to create memorable experiences for both fans and artists.

The Adventures of Pipeman Radio Show...
0:04 Hey, you love them too? Sure, I'm come from four s Why for you? Wake up America. It's time for the Adventures of Pitman on W four CY dot com West pom Beats number one internet radio station. Here's your host, the White Man. So why oh my god, jacket, why what second? That's his plight Man here on the Adventures by Man W four C by radio. And I'm here with Sean Smith of the Blackout and Sapping In podcast and also of Uncle Raiders. And nobody knows about I know about them? Do you? I do? I bet you don't know.
1:11 I you know. I'm unsure about them and I'm in them, so I don't think many people know about them. But yeah, yeah, so I'll prove that I'm not just agreeing with you. Yeah, okay, you guys were supposed to do a reunion show that didn't happen, and then the reunion ended up, and then the Raiders ended up doing that's true instead. Yeah that's true. That was the funeral for a friend to Yeah that's right. I see what fucking have You've done? Your research? I love it? How bad that I believe? Tell you what you must? You better than I am. I beat an interview because I don't know. I'm fucking terrible at research. I don't do much. I just find like cool tidbits, like I knew that was a cool tid Yeah. And another cold tidbit is your fucking sunglasses? Thank you? Try them on right, I'm telling you.
1:55 And when they say rules tinder, you look into rules tinder glasses. I see why whole the world's a better place. Wow, that is pretty cool. And when do you say you need the world to be a better right now more than ever? So now I got Now, while we're in the interview, I'll have to take a selfie with these because I used to. Two months ago, I had blue hair, so I always wore blue sunglasses to match my blue hair. Nice. So now I might have to go pink and buy some pink sunglasses. Yeah, they're lovely. When you take them off, you'd be disappointed without the world looks. That's the fucking a bunch of assholes. Oh everything's green, Hey, pink, there you go. I love it. So what I want to know, which maybe some people know but maybe a lot of people don't know, is how did this reunion happen? So basically, me and the boys in the Blackout.
2:46 We split up eight years ago because it was just kind of dwindling and becoming too much of a job for too little money. Really. Yeah, So the other boys in the band made the mistake of having children, right, Oh, don't do that. You're going to ruin your lives, your fools, right, Oh, don't do that. And then ultimately they kept them. Oh what a bad idea. So why would they keep them? Yeah, throw them out, marsh pit. If they don't make it out, they don't make it out, you can sell them. No it is anyway. Yeah, So we were just chatting. We've had a WhatsApp group that's been going ever since we split up, and then just one of the other boys suggested one day. They were like, look, we're not getting any younger our crowd and not getting any younger and our dwindling. So if we're gonna do any more shows, knows the time to do them. So we got in touch with Andy Coppin from Download and he said, yes, you're gonna have whatever you want to do it nice. So I said two million pounds and he said no, And I was like, okay, enough, what about one million. That kept going down till we agreed on hardly nothing but the cents right or fifty? Who was it here? Yeah? No, he did offer us the rapper fifty cents, but we were like, oh, we don't want him. I went either. Yeah, So yeah, we just kind of agreed there. We spoke. We spoke Andy and he was like, genuinely, I'd love you because we've done this. The last time we did this with twenty ten Wow, which is my thirteen years ago. So yeah, we've we played here twice, well two years we played you and but we played three times the one year. So we played
4:19 on the second we second from top on the second stage, we filled in for some forty one. The black and some forty one don't sound out anything like each other, so why I'm like, my head it's spinning right now that you said, when would you? But the funny thing is we ended up replacing some forty one on four different occasions on different things. Maybe they have you guys as like their backup play Listen, we got to cancel, but here call them. Yeah we got a cancel. Let's get a much worse band to play instead. So when people watch and they'll go, I really wish some forty one were you perhaps that's what they did clever, something very clever Some forty one. But they've just announced they're going to split up soon, so Past the Black would win this time. So yeah, yeah, Andy mentioned it to us. We jumped to the chance, and then when download got close to selling out, I emailed Andy being really cheeky, and I said, there's any chance we could do a warm up show in our hometown. So we just did that the past Monday nice and that was amazing. And yeah, it's a bit like Waynswilt two. When we booked it, we didn't think anybody would come, and it sold out in fifty three seconds and was one of the most fun shows we've ever done. Wow, fifty three seconds. I love that because Jim Morrison visited me in a dream and told me to book the gig. So yeah, it's going well so far. So you know, I think what happened was is some some forty one they they're splitting up, so you guys could get back together.
5:48 That's what it is. Yeah, They're like, oh, you're gonna have our gigs for a bit, And I'd love that because in some forty want to play in some monster gigs, right, right, you mean some forty one fan and then like my terrible, terrible band turns up, you've got to be gutted. We did fill on. We filled in from once. On the karrang tour. It was meant to be New Funglory some forty one While She Sleeps and a band called Let Live and some forty one pulled out, so the Blackout was offered to replace the for some reason, so we covered fat Lip for that tour. So we'd come out and we'd come out as sorry seems to be the artist word by Elton John, and then I would go, We're really sorry, we're not some forty one, and then we'd play one of our songs and as soon as I finished, should go only joking, we are some forty one, and then we'd play all the fat Lip, just because anyone who was there to see somebody one wants to your fat lip. Fact, how'd they react? Loved it? So they went from going like you could see you could see some forty one fans like what the fuck is this shouting nonsense? And then as soon as we started fat Lip, they were like FLA, yeah, they seem all right, I love it, but yeah it was good. Some good videos of that on the YouTube of us covering some forty one. But yeah, it's strange.
7:01 Why is some forty one doesn't make sense to me? I don't know. Maybe, like I'm saying, maybe they're you're like, listen, have these guys play so that nobody misses us. We haven't really thing is we haven't really met ama, so I don't even know. That's why it's very strange that we've replaced them five times. But so you mentioned Newfound Glory there. I live right by them, do you. Yeah? And those boys. Oh, it's so funny because Ian I was hanging out with him one time. I at a bar and he's like asking me how to pick up on some chrome, Like, dude, you're a Newfound Glory, Why are you asking me how to pick Like it's but I say this because it's so true. Everybody liked tends to think that because somebody's in a band or whatever, that it's like different or easy, you know, and you're just people.
7:48 Yeah, definitely. That's one of the main things I found is like, at the end of the day, we're going to realize this all your favorite rock stars. At some point I've hit their head trying to get out of a taxi or call they call ge zipper or something along those lines, Like you know, James Heathfield has definitely called his winkie in his jeans before now it's of course he has and everyone. The thing is, I've met I'd been lucky enough to meet all my heroes and they've all just been normal, nice chops. Oh yeah. Hetfield doesn't even think he's a good singer. Last night he's saying like, I don't know why I'm up here on this stage with all these great singers before me. I'm not a good singer. Why why people? Why hear me sing? It's imagine, yeah, but the bass. The thing, it's like what I fund is a lot of the bigger bands seem to be the most downtours nice guys, and then there's always the bands who are just on the come up with the ship deads.
8:39 You know, it's so funny you should say that because as a press person, yep, and I've interviewed like over two thousand bands, and I have this gauge. There's three levels. There's the new bands who they want the promo so they're nice as hell and cause hell and they have no ego yet. Yeah, okay, they have the icons who have no idea their icons like you're saying, and they're just cooled down her dudes. Like I interviewed Learned Skinner twice and they were just good old boys having a good time. They were laughing the whole interview. It's like, no ego whatsoever, no bullshit, it's those middle ones. Yeah, they get a little bit taste or they had like a hit twenty years ago and they're still on ego from that hit that nobody cares about anymore. Yeah, you know, it's very strange. But then yeah, you're like you meet masks like we were lucky enough in twenty and twelve the Blackout support in my chemical role months.
9:35 Literally the nicest, most normal guys in the world, like keeping contact to Mikey with Mikey from the bond to this day. Mes me. Yes, we mentioned each other yesterday actually, And they're the sweetest, nicest guys and they don't the strange you don't seem to realize. They're like in the world's biggest bond at the rights. So I got a story about them too when they did their re union show at Riot feste they were the band right before the original Misfits. Wow, I'm here to tell you I can get through any fucking crowd. Last night, I got out of here, ran over from Metallica when they were first starting. So I'm in the back and I worked my way all the way up to a pit my Kem. I couldn't Yeah Misfits, I did, Yeah, which blew my mind. How did I not get up for Mike Kem? But I and it was like I could not get through the crowd. It was so insane. They stopped the show four times. It was so insane, nuts like, and at one point their manager came out on stage and grabbed a mic and like, unless you guys chew out, we're taking them off completely. You know. Yeah, yeah, they just fucking the sweet thoughts. So when they came back and they did the Milton King show, they did three Milton Kings shows, they did Walring Done, and they did call If I was like enough to ask to be DJ to DJ the mains the stage before that, like all the bands, and I said to Mikey, I don't think you guys realized
11:09 They're like how important this was, especially after COVID happened. Yes. This was like the first massive gig for the UK and he was genuinely a cultural event, I think for the old scene. And I was like, Mikey, I don't think you realize like this means so much to so many people, and yeah, he was like, no, it's just a game. I was like, it's not just a gig. People are you communities like online communities are your all your fans people we've met through your fans, Your fans will now like my band. I'm hanging out with them, like you've brought all these people together. And he was like, I've never really looked at it like that. And I was like, Bro, You're in the biggest band and I'm going cold with thinking about it. In the biggest band in the world. Bro, this is nuts. And yeah, what an event. And I have forever grateful for my chemical romance top chaps nice.
11:58 So now forget my chemical roilemance. Let's talk about something more important. Podcast. Oh god, that's much worse. But yeah, yeah, So I started a podcast when my band failed miserably and because I can't tattoo or cut hair like every other front man, I had the one option that was left. I can talk shit, I'll start a podcast. There you go, because other front men at tattoists and barbers. That's it. That's the only three jobs you can have, right, So I started a podcast. I started texting all my friends in bands to come on the podcast, and I thought by the time I got to about episode ten, we'd be done. And we've done two hundred and fifty weeks in a row. At the moment every Friday ones come out. We've had comedians, we've had wrestlers, we've had people in bands, we've had film stars. Yeah, we've just had We've had a whole range of people whereking people will subscribe and listen to it whenever you find podcasts if you have a look for sappening like it's like, what's happening but SA double p E N I and stopping in because that's like a Welsh coloquial to him stopping all, I thought, how's it going?
13:07 That's so we're speaking whales? Really? Yeah, So yeah, check it out something podcasts with Seoan Smith. I guarantee you there will be at least one episode with somebody you like on it. And it's always fun and funny, and we guess some really really fun weird stories out of people as well. Do you ever do an episode where like you interview your band, but not like you're in the band, like you're like some press person interviewing. I haven't yet asked. Very good idea, I'm gonna take. Thank you very much. You could even do a like play a different role, like do a different voice and I'm here, I'm here with the man the black Out. Yeah, but then answer the questions myself. So I'll be like, right now, Sean, I'll did a bang about well actually and yeah, just playing two people, but actually we're doing a live podcast tomorrow on a side spit of stage nice and I will be into doing some of my band, so I might do the funny voice now. So thank you for the idea. Don't tell them, Yeah, don't tell them because they'll be like, what the fuck is Shane's gone fully mad, boys, Shane's gone mad with power. You had a good gig yesterday. I know he thinks he's two people. Oh I love yeah. Yeah, So check it out if you want to. If you don't, I don't, yeah, whatever, thank you. If you don't, then there's three million other shitty podcast there's twelve billion podcasts started every day, I check one of them out.
14:30 But yeah, so tell everybody how they can reach out to a Blackout and they can buy your merch because otherwise you're breaking up again. That's true. They don't buy your merch they can't listen to my show anymore, and you guys are breaking up very much. So yeah, if you go to the blackoutband dot com, we have merchandise there. If you check out at at the Blackout on Twitter, at the Blackout Music on Instagram, we have got a TikTok, but we're all nearly forty plus so we don't really know what to use it any well, so yeah, just google the Blackout and click one of those links. I guess nice. Any final words you want to leave the listeners with if you're thinking about going to any festivals this year, take sunscreen, please, hydrate, condoms and lube. That's all. That's everything I need to have a good festival. Well, that's it, that's all you need. Yeah, if I need somebody to use the condoms and lub on though no, really, you can use yourself. I suppose it's posh. Yeah, yes see. And then if you use the condom, now it feels like it's somebody you go exactly. There is a podcast episode, the Sex Edition says I love it. Thank you well, thank you very much for being at the twentieth adversary of download first Oh my gossolutely crazy, but no, thank you very much for having me. Yeah, I've seen it like I've I've been coming every year with my podcast for four years now and I see you about all the time, and yeah, I'm glad that we got to do this and got a chat fun. Yeah. Yeah,
