On this episode of the Adventures of Pipeman, Pipeman speaks to Jeff from the band Tesla. They discuss the band's recently released full live album, "Full Throttle Live," which Jeff describes as a record that captures the energy and excitement of their live shows. They talk about the process of selecting songs for the album, including the addition of their cover of Aerosmith's "SOS Too Bad." Jeff also shares the story behind the song "Miles Away" and how it represents the band's journey of reuniting and making music together. They emphasize the importance of writing songs from the heart and how Tesla's passion for writing drives them to continue creating music, regardless of commercial success.
Pipeman and Jeff discuss the realities of being musicians and how the public perception of rock stars often overlooks the challenges and hardships they face. They share the story of a crew member who tragically lost his life while on tour with the band, highlighting the real-life struggles they experience. Jeff emphasizes that Tesla writes songs that resonate with their own experiences and emotions, and if others can relate to them, it's an added bonus.
The conversation shifts to Tesla's upcoming performances, including their previous Sturgis appearance and their upcoming Las Vegas residency at the House of Blues. Jeff expresses gratitude for the fans who travel from different parts of the country to attend their shows, highlighting the band's enduring fan base. They also discuss the band's practice of changing up their setlist, ensuring a fresh experience for both themselves and their audience. Jeff mentions the excitement of reintroducing rare songs into their performances, some of which haven't been played in decades.
Pipeman commends Tesla's longevity and their ability to continue producing great music. 0:04 Hey, you love them too? Sure, why you wake up America? It's time for the Adventure. So Pipeman on W four C why dot com West pom beats his number one internet radio station. Here's your host, the white Man Himen Last. This is the pipe Man here on the Adventures a Pipe Man, W four C Y Radio. And I'm very excited because we have like one of the best bands in the world here on the show right now, and we're going to talk about some cool stuff. So let's welcome Jeff from Tesla. How are you doing great man? Hello everybody. Yeah, So I just gotta say right off the bat, I am loving, loving, loving that you guys put out a full live album that is full throttle. It's like badass. It's a badass live album. We went to
1:37 the full trottle. You know. That show was just you know, just had you know, the least flaws whenever you want to say it and just say, hey, man, sounded great, and let's put it out as a record, and we'll put this out as a single out at all, which one. I never know that stuff. I'm just a guy to hand in microphone too, but came out great. I'm really excited about it, and yeah, I think that's when we added and we started doing sos too Bad Aerosmith song. Yeah, we started doing that live in the set and decided, hey, let's put that on it. I think that I don't know, I could be wrong, it could be lazy days. I get mixed up which one is the single, But all I know is it's a great live record. We had fun doing it. Oh, I'd think every song on it is great for sure. And miles Away I dig like, to me, it's the coolest song because like it takes you on a journey and I feel like I'm going miles away when I'm listening to that. Well, that's fantastic, you see, because that song came off the Into the Now and that's Montessa got back together in two thousand and we decided, hey, we played one show to Arco Arena, told the place out, eighteen thousand people, whatever, and then then we committed to three more shows like the Warner Theater and Fresno you know cup Spots Bright that in Northern California.
3:01 We did that, went all right, well, let's commit to you know, a full leg and we love touring. We did that. Next, you know, we're back to touring, touring, and and come two thousand and three and we said, well, the next commitment is making a record. So we made that record on our own. Frank lived up Pollock Pines. He had a little bit of studio next to this bowling alley up in Pollock Pines. And we had a guy Marco who it's Dave's guitars head, but he does everything for the band and he knows how to do all this carpentery. Helped beat up build all the studios and he floated the floors and made is boots next. You know, we made it. We wrote, produced, and mixed the record all on our own. We did all on our own. Wow. Yeah. And so it's one of my favorite records to be not just because we did all on our own, because it's got great songs in there. I think. So that's Miles Away. Yeah, Miles Away came out that record, and I guess you know, that's probably the single off the Slide record. But it's a great song. I love it. And man, it's just real real life you know story. You know the words behind it because I wrote the words, and it's just you know about how people think you just got it made being in a rock band, and you know, it's all just all this glory. But hey man, we're people. We're just regular people too, you know. And that's what the song kind of ye you know says, you know, like, if you think I just got it made, well you're miles away because we're
4:33 just regular people too, yeah, you know. And that's also why I love about the song too, because a lot of people don't realize it. You just just because you're a musician doesn't mean you're not living the same life. A lot of people are living and have the same ups and downs, and it looks like it's all, you know, rose colored glasses. But at the end of the day, you guys, to me, musicians are some of the hardest working people there are, yeah, right, And you know, and also a guy that worked Force for years, and his name was Jeff Rader. He had met a girl when he's on tour with us back on the East Coast, and he went back to visit her and went to the station with her to watch Great White and he ended up they got pictures of him. He made it out of the club, couldn't find this girl that he had just met, and you know, he was in love with. He went back in and they found him next to her perished.
5:41 So so that's why it where it says, well the chief you don't know, my friend got today. So you know, I mean, that's real life stuff that happens us too, you know, So you know, and he was a great guy, Jeff Raider. And so that's you know, like I said, every words, just true real life. We're just regular people and we lose friends and and and loved ones and just like anybody else. Yeah, yeah, And I'll tell you what I mean. I'm always in awe when an artist like you can write music after so many years of doing it, because sometimes I think to myself, wow, how do you just come up with new content to write? But that that's the beauty of a band like you, guys, and a songwriter like you is like you're just telling real life stories. Well you know, pipe man. And that's the thing about with Tessa. We could sit here and go play gigs and just play off our let's say how the term is old catalog and just play shows. But we love to write. Yeah, and even if they went nowhere, we're still the band. We love to write songs and now we're in a position where we got our own record label everything, and so we can just write and put something out when we want. And we're very fortunate to be in that position. And once again, we love to write songs.
7:10 We will always write songs, Tessa will always write songs, whether they go anywhere, whether anybody hears them, we will write them because we have a passion for writing songs. So we can't stop. We can't stop write them. I love it, And you know what, that's the only see to me, a true artist is like you, like you're saying that you write the song for you, not for everybody else. Now, if everybody else can relate to it, then that's just a bonus at the end of the day in my opinion, right because see, we were told, you know, when we first started by Q Prime, our management, they said, listen, guys, write songs from the heart, because you may never tell five ten thousand records. You may be playing in front of five ten people because a lot of bands that start off they never make it, they never go anywhere. But yeah, at least if you are in that position where you're not selling records, you're not just become become coming this hit like kind of band you're in front of very few people. But if you're up there on stage and you wrote the song from the heart, nobody may be there or nobody may like them, but at least you're they're on stage having fun playing songs from the heart. And that's what we've all done, just right from the heart. That is like some phenomenal advice, and that was
8:41 smart of you guys to take it. You know sometimes well, you know what, we listen to everything they said. There you go, and that's why you're here today and as badass, if not more than ever. And listen, it's pretty cool that you get the I mean, I would think it's a big honor. And playing at Sturgis number one. That's huge in my opinion. Now you're gonna be doing a Las Vegas residency, like that's that's pretty We did one, Yeah, we did one already and then they it's sold so good and everything and people loved it. They asked us back, and we're going back. What at the end of September, first October, we're doing another same as five shows in ten days at the House of Blues. So then you know that would be our second little residency, and from what I understand, once again, I'm just a guy. They hand the microphone too. The one we did a couple of months ago was such a huge success that they asked us back to do another one. And from what I understand, it's a big deal to do a residency because not just any band can go I want to do a residency in Las Vegas, they go, hang on, we choose who does one? So we got to be one of the chosen, one of the littler bands that do it.
9:58 You know, Hey, I don't, I don't think so little. And yes it is. I think that's huge to play a Las Vegas residency. I mean it's huge. Yeah, you're you're alongsome really like The first name that comes to mind to me is Elvis Presley, who you're Oh, well, I don't know about that. Well, thank you. I appreciate that time, man. But you know what it does is it establishes that you have enough fans from all across the country that you know, fly to Vegas to see you play. Yeah, I mean there were some people that went to three of them, went to all five of them. We've we've got our what we call our you know, multiple shows people, but there was every night, there was a majority of it was people that, hey, I just flew in from you know, you know, from from Texas or Oklahoma or wherever it may be up in Philadelphia, whatever, and they flew in to see one show and been a couple of days and went back.
10:56 So I guess it showed that we still got fans from all over the place. There it is, there it is, and it's pretty cool. I also read that you guys like switched up the set so like it's not like every night's a saved, which I think is better for you guys too, because you would get bored playing the same thing every night. So it's it's a win for everybody. We love switching it up, you know, because there's always a staple songs you can't go to a test show with at here, modern day cowboy love songs, signs, you know, I mean Heaven's Trail. We've got so many songs like that that we are staple songs. So every night when we do an hour and a half show, there's I don't know what is it, ten twelve staple songs, So we always have four songs that we take out of them. Four songs. We'll go, let's play two of these that we you know, switch into the set you know, frequently or in and out or once in a while. And then we always like to pull what we call a couple of rabbits out of a hat, play a couple of songs that people go, oh wow, feeling like we're no good together or something like that. And we played that, you know, and songs like that that we don't play in sometime, we haven't ever played since back in thirty thirty seven years ago. Wow, I love that. It's way cool. Well that's when I started listening to you of us, That's when I started listening way back then. So I mean, it's just amazing amazes me that we're both here today in two thou twenty
12:28 three and still talking about these great songs. And you know, Wi pipe man, because just like you, we have a lot of fans that have been there since and they're still listening to us, they're still coming out, and they're still passing the steeds. So we're very fortunate, absolutely and deserve it is what I would say, because I gotta tell you here we are two twenty three, Full Throttle Live is a badass album that everybody has to go get and they can go to your You have a link tree for it where they can listen everywhere, and they can also go to your website Tesla the Band, and connect with you guys on socials, check out all the tour dates and catch up with you in Las Vegas and all that great stuff.
13:20 Is there any final words you want to say to the listeners that we haven't covered yet that they need to know about what's going on with Tesla? You know what, I just want to thank all you test the fans for all us being there for us. Come and bring somebody that maybe hasn't heard us, and maybe they'll start liking us too. Well. I think everybody digs you, guys, and I definitely dig you guys. And thanks for playing out such great music over so many years. And thanks for being on the Adventures of pipe Man. All right, well, thanks for still loving us pipe Man, and I know you'll keep on leving us. And thanks for your time and shade it as well. You got it.
