On this episode of the Adventures of Pipeman, Pipeman is joined by the band Sun Room at the Shaking Knees festival. Sunroom expresses how amazing it was to be at the festival and the band's favorite performance so far. Pipeman asks them about their usual festival experiences, and they mention that they haven't played too many but their most notable one was ACL. They talk about how they have come a long way since their ACL set that was botched, and it was great to redeem themselves. Pipeman shares a funny experience of doing an interview where he thought he sucked, but the interviewer thought it was the greatest interview ever. Pipeman then asks the band members what prompted them to start playing music. Sun Room explains that after they released their first EP, which got more attention than any high school bands he had played in, he realized that music could be his full-time job. It spurred them on to keep grinding and releasing music, and touring. Pipeman shares his experience with the Metallica Black album and how it changed everything for him. He goes on to say that he used to be a gatekeeper asshole, but now he understands that they deserve the recognition they get. Later, Pipeman asks the band members what prompted them to start playing in a band. Sun Room explains that he has never thought about what initially got him into it, but he got his answer now. Pipeman shares his personal experience of getting a guitar as a kid and hearing the Metallica Black album, and that's when he knew music was life. The band members then talk about how they started playing together, and Sunroom explains how they have evolved into a more organic band. They talk about their current project and how they are taking their time with it. You can follow the guys over on all their social media accounts @sunroomband, and find them over on Spotify under Sun Room. Keep an eye out for their new EP coming this summer which is going to be awesome!

The Adventures of Pipeman is broadcast live daily at 8AM...

00 Hey, you love them too, that's sure. I'm come from four see why for you the way up America, It's time for the Adventures of Pipeman on W four CWY dot com West pom Beats number one internet radio station. Here's your host, the white Man. This when he came around. This is it's the pipe Man here on the Adventures pipew four cy Radio. And I'm here with room. Yes, I gotta tell you something, guys.

07 I get stuck in here and I want to go to sets, and then I like get stuck. But then I heard this music that I was like, that's fucking badass. So I walked outside and I stood like right at the media tent area and and it was you guys. You guys were badass. What was it like being here at Shaking Kneeds. I didn't get to see the crowd because I wasn't out there. Yeah, it's been it's been sick with yesterday. We just got to walk around and like see all the sets and stuff and get get kind of amped up for today. And then today the set was super rode. I was just TALKINGNA, Yeah, we I think this is like our favorite set we've played so far at a festival, So you're nice, Yeah, pretty nuts. That's good to hear.

51 What other festivals do you do? Usually? We actually haven't played too many festivals, but the first one and probably the most notable out of the ones we did, was a yell oh okay cool, So that one was sick. We do that one like right kind of when this lineup of the band like started in twenty twenty. So yeah, we've definitely come a long way since then. That I was selling them to you that that set was pretty botched. So it's sick to kind of redeem our our festival, but nobody in the crowd knows it's botched. Only you do. You know. It's like it's like sometimes too, I do an interview and I'm like thinking, man, I'm sucking right now. And then I get off to interview and they're like, man, that was the greatest interview. I'm like scratching my head. I'm like, oh, yeah, I fucking sucked. What are you talking about? Yeah? Oh man, So let's start here. Let's let's talk about what was it. What was that one moment in time where you're like, this is why I need to do that, you know, like when you realize music was life. Yeah, and you all have different ones. You all have different ones, I'm sure, yeah, yeah.

00 I don't think I ever like thought it was possible to do a band like as a full time gig, right, But then like right after we put the first CP out, it got like way more intention than like any of the high school bands I had played in. And I think that was kind of like when I started realizing, like, dang, do you like this could actually this could be it, Like this could be my job and stuff. And so I think that kind of like just spurred us on to keep grinding and releasing music and touring and stuff. So nice, And what prompted you to start playing in a band to begin with? For this, for Sundry, for ending band, like in the beginning, like when you're a kid. That's that's deep, man, I've never thought about what what Initially, He's got an answer for me personally. I got a guitar as a kid, and I heard the Metallica Black album Nice when I knew I was at the first Metallica show ever. What Yep, when Black came out, I was like, fuck those posers, I'm sure is yeah, So me and my friends there were like twenty five of us that used to go to shows and stuff, and like so as soon as they start getting popular and being played on the radio, like back then, it was like if you got on the radio, you suck, you know. And so yeah, but that Black Album changed everything because we probably wouldn't be here right now if it weren't for that Black Album, you know, bomb line, Like I go to festivals that have one hundred thousand people for a metal show. That

32 wouldn't have happened without the Black Album. Okay, there were twenty five of us at a Metallica show, you know, and that was it, you know. And so it is pretty pinkled now that I'm you know a little more mature about it, you know, Like then I was a little bit of a gatekeeper asshole, and then it's like, oh, well, yeah they deserve it. Yeah, I kind of broke the seal on metal mainstream there. Yeah, how you guys. For For me, my my dad was in like one of the cool rock bands and the early eighties in San Diego. Like they never like made it bigg or anything, but like I would meet like my friends parents and they'd be like, your dad was the singer in that band, and I'd be like, yeah, do you want to mention the band? They're called this Kid's Okay. Yeah, they don't have any music out really, there's like a couple of songs on YouTube.

26 But so I kind of just grew up around instruments and my dad was always singing or whistling and like, for some reason, my dad played guitar and sang, but the instrument I wanted to play was the drums. That's always he wanted to be different. Yeah, So I'd see my dad and his buddies jamming and I'd always get on the drum kit. But pretty much my dad's the reason I do music at all. See that's way cool, yeah, because usually it's the other way around. Yeah, Like it's always the story of like the parents. It's like a fuck you dad, I'm playing music. Was him, Like I grew up playing in like a little family band. Nice, Like it was all we would like play at like churches, and we'd like travel to go play at these like churches and stuff.

10 But yeah, when I realized that I wanted to do music full time, though, I moved from southern California to Michigan to be an electrician after high school because I told myself I wasn't gonna go to college. And then I lived in the Midwest in the winter versus the San Diego winter. Yeah, and I was like, dude, this sucks. I want to move home and make music. And then eventually I got to like asked to play in this band. And it's been a blessing ever since. So it's pretty great. I love it. Those are great stories. I love it. So now, in all this time you guys have been involved in music, whether it's a band or before the band, do you have one story, good or bad, that you're just gonna remember forever that happened. I think one of the funnier stories of our touring career was in um, what city was it in Germany that we slept on the road. Nay, Oh, I'll be there in the summer for that huge festival, the Dane Festival. Yeah, four point five million people or some shit like that. It's free, it's free. We gotta we gotta book it out there, dude, I know, right, But yeah, we were. We were on tour and yeah, we were in Vienna that night and our tour manager, Bernie's like this English dude, He's a legend. He normally like would go out with us after the show, but he was like super beat this night, so

40 he was like, dude, I'm gonna go to bed, like I'll meet you at the Airbnb. I'll text you directions on how to get into the Airbnb, and so we like go out. We were on tour with we were opening up for this Irish rock band called Inhaler Okay, and so we like go out to like an Irish pub with them. They always like to go to the Irish pubs. And then we walk back to where the Airbnb was, and like we were looking at his directions and we like couldn't figure out how to get in, and like that, we tried like texting and calling him, and we didn't even know like really which unit was right, so we couldn't like bang on the windows because like it might just be some random people, right, And so we ended up just like sleeping out on the street, like on the sidewalk, and um, yeah, there was like a fight like kind of happening like super close by, and we were all just like and it was kind of cold that night too, It's like early spring in Vienna, and we just curled up on the sidewalk and like slept on the sidewalks. So yeah, that was pretty grim, but good memory. That's so rock. Yeah, like that's that. You know that that you're not a band if you don't have a story like that. Yeah.

50 So we guys got going on after shaking nice. So we go home tomorrow. We're kind of at the hail end of a tour right now, go home, play one other show this week, and then we're we have the biggest break from shows we've had since we kind of started. We have like three months this summer to just like write music and record and surf basically. You know what, before he said surf, I was gonna say and before he said, are you gonna be surfing for that three months? Yeah, that's probably music and surf is all you will do this summer. It's nice. Yeah, that's that's totally me too. I just got back from Bali surfing. Oh what dude, huh where you're You're Yeah you're an Indo Indonesia Yeah yeah, yeah yeah yeah. And Costa Rica. I go to Costa Rica all the time to surf. I love Costa Rica, play Hermosa and like Coco and all that. Yeah, I've been all of them.

45 My favorite is No, Sara, Where's that sat? All that stuff a lot more than I do. Yeah, it's cool as shit, but yeah, I even so, since you guys are surfers, I'll tell you a story like I even I've had two hardtechs surfing and I still surf. Yes. So the first one was in Hawaii and they fucked me up in the in the hospital and it caused a second one. So I was recuperating for a year, and then I went to Costa Rica to celebrate when my doctor cleared me and I actually surfed like four or five waves, having a heart attack. I didn't know I was having a heart attack. It's like weird feeling coming down, like fucking I'm just tired. And then a massive heart attack on a ten foot wave. I was on the wave. I was like when it happened, I was like, oh fuck, not again, dude. And I paddled back to shore and Costa Rica saved my life.

45 Their medical system is like incredible really, so yeah, and then I went through another year recovery. I went back to Costa Rica, I surfed again, didn't get a heart attack, didn't. I came home three days later we were locked down for COVID. So yeah, it was it was a trippy a few years, dude, trippy few years. But but but I spent a few months surfing Costa, Rica and Bali and we're here having an interview. Now. You know, those are my two things music, surfing, skateboarding. Those are all my things right there. Yeah, that's all we do. That's all we do, say, and there's and see you could get to be at my stage and still do it because I still go into moshpitz Toole's god, dude, So it's funny. I interviewed a band recently kind of like what you're saying. There was this band in LA when I was a teenager. They were a killer thrash metal band, but they never made it out of LA like they did for a little while. They were on tour with Motorhead, but they never made it big. Most people don't know of them now and they just or came out with a new album today after like thirty forty years, Savage Grace, Savageries, and so I interviewed the I interviewed the singer who I would ordered, the guitarist who I was good friends with back then, I like. I hung out with them all the time. I would help him roady and all that shit. I at one of their shows and it was the lasting time I saw them.

18 I did a stage dive off of a Marshall stack and I was I was full swan mid air and the crowd moved and I got seen from school Rock when he jumps out and it just all spread exactly and I there was nothing I could do. Its been air. I was like, oh fuck, and I hit the ground teeth first, knocked out my teeth. So I brought it up to him in the ear in the interview, of course, he knew me so, and it was like in the interview he's like, yes, that was probably you are the most I forget what he said, the most severe tragedy of metal in the Sunset strip of the eighties. So what's even funnier is than one of my best friends from back then, who's in a few bands plays in Conflict, was in Christian Death as a band called bell Weather Syndicate. He's the one that got my teeth and put him in a in a cup vice and stuff, and he remembers the whole story.

20 And so I was saying, told him about this, ain't. He sent me a message and he basically said, well, you were the most hardcore dude when two weeks after that happened, you went to a Venom show with your face taped up and your nose all bruised, and you were at a Venom show, and so like, there it is. That's who I am. That's amazing. Love that. I love that. That's awesome. So next time I catch you guys play, I could be in your pit. Yeah, get so there. I don't. I don't stage dive anymore, definitely. I don't trust people enough, Like, at least in the pit, I'm in control. I won't CrowdSurf. I won't stage dive because then other people were in control. Fuck them. Back in the day, I was at a punk show and probably like a two urn fifty pound guy went and did a front flip stage dive and I caught his doc Martin right.

20 Oh it hurts so bad, man, Yeah, it almost knocked me out. Dude. Wow, that's brutal. But you know what, it's stories like that. You're like, fuck, yeah, that's it man. So how do people connect to you guys on socials on the web by your merch because ours don't survive without merch nowadays and they need your sport, so tell them how they support you. Our Instagram is at sunroom Band, and I think that goes for all the socials. Okay, cool website, all that good stuff, we've got it all nice. Yeah it should be just sunroom Band though. Cool. That's where you can see like what we're playing coming up and stuff. And the Spotify is not sunroom Band, It's just it's just sunroom Okay. I see. I'm glad you clarified that because I think it was not sunroom Band because that would be funny. So anything else you need to share with the listeners that we haven't covered yet that they need to know about. Oh yeah, yeah, we have a new EP coming out soon this summer. Yeah you shouldn't forget about that. Yeah exactly, so that that should be sick. We're super ampt on these new four songs, so it'll be it'll be right, yeah, nice. So everybody makes sure to get that exactly because it's gonna be killer music. I'm telling you, like hearing how you can hear it. So I heard that, I was like, fuck, that band's really good, and I walked outside.

52 Dude. Yeah, yeah, I have a few of the songs we played in our set today are on that new EP. So nice and the crowd like it. Yeah, it was sick. They were motioned. So there's this homie like crowdsurfing which was sick that we were washing with yesterday. So we washed with him yesterday at the Shame show and then we saw him crowdsurfing in our show. So loving love legend. Dude, that's gonna feel so great your rus up on stage and looking down at people washing to your I love it. Well guys. You guys rock and I hope to see a lot more of you. And thanks for being here at Shaking these and thanks for being on the Adventures of pipe Man. Hi. Yeah, thanks for having us man for sure, what's up? We are son and you are listening to the Pipeman on W four c Y. Thank you for listening to the Adventures of Pipe Man. I'm W four CUI Radio.
