On this episode of the Adventures of Pipeman, Pipeman speaks to Brown and Varner from the band Monuments. Pipeman starts by discussing the challenges of pronouncing band names correctly and the importance of getting it right. Brown and Varner share their excitement about being at the 20th anniversary of Download Festival, with Varner mentioning it's his first time attending. Brown reflects on their previous performance at the festival in 2014 and praises the hard work of the festival organizers. They discuss how Monuments was hand-picked for the lineup, and Pipeman shares a personal anecdote about his connection to Manchester, where he used to live. The conversation then shifts to their shared love for the Netherlands and their experiences there during the winter.
The focus then turns to Monuments' music. Brown describes their music as melodically sound metal, emphasizing their focus on creating memorable melodies and motifs. Varner adds that their sound also incorporates a rhythmic and groovy quality that can even make you want to dance. Pipeman expresses his appreciation for bands that blend genres and prioritize creativity over formulaic approaches. They discuss the experimentation and new elements found on their latest album, including the involvement of Mick Gordon in producing the background elements of their music. The album combines catchy melodies with unique instrumentation, resulting in a distinct sound that can be easily understood and appreciated.

00 Hey, you love them too, that's sure. I'm come from four s why for you Wake up America. It's time for the Adventures of pipe Man on W four C why dot com west pom beats number one internet radio station. Here's your host, the pipe Man. This who's the pipe Man?
59 Here on the Adventures fight Man W four CY Radio. Here at Download Festival, and I'm here with nice. Yeah, we've never done that before. And you know why I do it. I wouldn't have with yours, but I do it a lot of times because I never want to put your band's name and even if even if I get it in my head, I'm like, I butcher it anyway. Sometimes. I mean, it's pretty hard to put your monuments, but I bet somebody could, Yeah, easily. They probably forget the ass and just say monuments. There you go. And I think that's so insulting too, if you like butchered her name, like why I do phone ers? I'm like, is this how you pronounce her name?
42 I just want to be sure, like it could be a word like car. Do you pronounce it car? Because you know how it is? Nowadays, sometimes band names are spelled differently, or they're pronounced differently and it's like, well, no, it's supposed to be c a R hicle. So how does it feel to be at the twentieth anniversary of Download? Oh man, It's it's massive. Like for me especially, I've never been to Download to begin with, like me being a Dutchman and all, I'm not even from the area. So getting to be at this legendary festival, at a stage like this, it's it's massive. Must be even different for Brown just knowing about it for years and having played it. Yeah, I mean last time we played it was twenty fourteen and I've not been since actually, and it's because I'm a hermit. But yeah, this this festival is always great, you know. Big shout out to Cam and Andy for all the hard work they put into this festival and obviously their team. They always do a great job. And it says a lot that they picked you because to me, I think twentieth anniversary, you're gonna hand pick who's gonna be on that lineup. Yeah, And funny enough, we actually got told we were getting picked before we got the offer. Ye, So that was back in May twenty twenty two. So Cam said I want you guys to play this download I'll throw an off of when the time's right. Because he did our Manchester show on the tour. We did it for the release of our last record, so yeah, it was good to hear that far in advance that he wanted us on it, so that was awesome. Nice. See,
13 I won't show up to your Manchester show because my ex wife's from Manchester. Oh I am sorry. Yeah, yeah, and I grew up in Manchester. Everybody I talked too that's from Manchester. Like, oh, sorry about that. She webs batshit crazy too. Yeah, there's a lot of them in England, right, and I think, I think in Manchester from what I hear. It's even more so. I actually spent thirteen years of my life in Manchester growing up there, and yeah, it's pretty crazy. And but your country I love. That's like one of my favorite places in the world. In fact, i'm kind of an idiot because I live in Florida from April to November. I'm the opposite of what normal people do. Man Yeah, and then I traveled to Europe and other countries during the winter and one of the places I always go during the winter is the Netherlands. And this year, like I was there for like a month and a half, two months. I'm like, what the fuck am I thinking coming here during the winter, like I saw in two months three hours of sunlight. Yeah, exactly, that's how it is. I mean, you use back in the day, there used to be some redeeming qualities about it because we would get these cold winters a lot of ice. People would go ice skating on the canals and stuff like this. Now but nowadays it's just getting warmer and warmer each year. It almost seems, yeah, that is happening, and now it's just great overcasting, cold and wet, so all the redeeming qualities are gone and just the coldness is left. So yeah, it's funny you
46 said about the warm By the way, last summer I stayed there too, and my airbnb host she's like, I've lived here my whole life. This is the hottest summer ever because it was like this when I was there. But the one redeeming quality about going to the Netherlands is you get to go and have winkles. Oh you know what's so funny about You've mentioning that. So a couple of friends of mine that are due to us festival circuit. They just landed in Amsterdam today and I sent them over. I'm like, you need to go to Winkles. Yeah is period. Yeah, So this winter I brought my daughters to come visit because I also and I'm from New York. My favorite place in the world for New Year's is Amsterdam. And it's such a badass. Like everybody thinks Times Square is cool, it sucks.
40 Okay, listen, it's a fucking tourist thing. Number One. You're barricaded in in the freezing cold, and you gotta get there like early in the morning, and you can't even leave to go to the bathroom, and then it becomes like a sardine can. You're there for like sixteen hours, and then when the ball drops, it's like anti climactic because it's really all It's not like what it looks like on TV. But I remember the first time I did it in Amsterdam, I was like, holy shit, this is really cool. I can just go where I want, walk around, Cops aren't bothering people, and everybody's just having a good time and doing their own shit everywhere. It's like so bad ass. So I brought them, and I brought my daughters two Winkles, and one of them's like, well, I don't like apple pie, Like this ain't American apple pie. Okay, this is the real deal, because I don't like American apple pie either, and she was like, oh my god, this is the type I told you. Yeah, And we were waiting online in the freezing cold forever, you know, so she was getting all pissed at me. Why are we waiting online to get to get apple pie? Even want apple pie?
48 Honestly, I don't really like apple pie either, right because because in English apple pie the apples are normally like quite hot and horrible. You know. It's like because they used Bromley apple, you know, Bromley apples, and it's it's like horrible. But this Winkles place, it was like a game changer. Oh yeah, cinnamon apple, gorgeous. I want it. We need to have say. I'm just happy how this conversation has turned into the love letter to the Netherlands. I know That's what I'm here for us, all right, I love it. I'm not gonna say it though, so yeah, I know what you're saying. But what we need to do now that we brought this up is we have to schedule a live monument show at Winkles. Wow, game changer hasn't right for man. Yeah, and everybody that buys a ticket gets a free slice of pie. Absolutely because there there is the classic hardcore show at Denny's. Right, we all know about that, so right, why not the metalcore show at Winkles. I love it.
43 Get it done that. I love it? Oh man, oh my god, it would be amazing Winkles. I hope you're listening to this. I know you're not, but you should. I'm gonna send it to them. Yeah, you need to send it to them exactly. Yeah. Oh man, So let's talk about your music. Ah, we don't need to do that. That's fine. So for our listeners that have never heard you guys before, how would you guys as always describe the music besides the genre stuff, because they're always boxes artists in artists have their own idea what their music is. I want to hear it. That's quite a good question and very difficult to answer. Yeah, it's a very difficult one. I would say, if we don't want to discuss genres or anything, I would say that it's melodically sounds metal and what I mean by that is that we always think of the melody. Yes, Like, regardless of how heavy we are, there's always something you can latch onto, and sometimes it will be different.
45 When you hear it back, you'd be like, Oh, there's that cool melody that's happening there that I've heard earlier. So we're constantly trying to do this motif thing like classical music or film music. You know, if you take like the film Gladiator, for example, you can hear motifs for different characters, which is if they're sad or major if they're happy. We kind of try and do that a lot too much. Yeah, I would. I would definitely second everything that Brown's saying, but definitely like add a bit of an emphasis on the rhythmical element of it. I think there's a lot of every bouncy like groovy quality to her sound. And yeah, I mean you can also dance to it a little bit, so that's going on as well on top of the melody. See. I dig all that because like I think nowadays, there's two types of bands. The ones I like that kind of blend genres and just be creative and do their own thing, and then there's the ones that I always say they use an algebraic equation to make a metal song. Like, and I'm old school metal head. That's not how it works. You don't just plug in a formula. It's creativity and experimentation. I remember when I first started playing guitar, my dad gone, you've ever give that up? Because you suck? And because I was like testing all these sounds and feedback sounds and all this stuff that with a lade the shit out of him. I'm like, that sounds cool. I'm going to do that. Yeah. Actually, we did a bit of experimentation on the last album with this, Like I've never used a HM two on any album until this one and an octave pedal, and I was just I
16 was just listening to it, and I was like, I can literally play one note and I'm happy. Nice, You know what I mean. When you find that sound where you play one note and you can feel it through your entire aura and it just it's awesome, you know, like something like Sun or Carnate or you know one of those bands that blasts everyone's ear drums to pieces. That's the sounds that I was listening to. And I was like, now I know why they love this. This is sick there you go. Yeah, And so how would you say, like the new album is compared to previous work. For obviously it's got the essence of the old material, but we've added new elements to it. Like we've got Mick Gordon to do the background production of our music, so that's like all the synths, I guess, violins, string arrangements and stuff like that and weird noises and we just gave him free rain, so there's a part that sounds like Phantom of the Opera to me. Yeah, exactly, and then we'd go from like our normal sound to mixing this octave HM two thing. So it's like it's kind of like got a mixture of everything, but it's always also catchy in the melodies, and that's the one thing we always wanted to do.
20 We always want it so that someone can sing it back. Yeah, and you can say that it's form you layic, but I mean, like Michael Jackson, like he wrote pop songs, and it doesn't matter if if the riffs and the parts are different, then it can still be its own unique thing. So yeah, we always try and make it so people can understand it. But at the same time, we experiment in those ways where we can have different rhythmic arrangements with different or instrumentation basically, so we're constantly experimenting. I love it. And unique is the keyword because that's my favorite word when it comes to music, because I want to hear the same band over and over again. Nobody does. It's like, blows my mind.
03 But we can all copy my sugar, and it's fine. There you go all day, all day. Love it all right, Tell everybody out to connect with you guys on your socials, on the web, how to get your new album, merch all that great stuff. Absolutely so, Yeah, this is monuments on Instagram, just Monuments on Facebook. As far as I know, this is monuments. Everything is. This is monuments.
