04 Hey, you have then too, censure Wow, pray young, Why coup America. It's time for the Adventures of pipe Man on W four c Y dot com. West pomp Beats is number one internet radio station. Here's your host, the pipe Man. It's the pipe Man here on the Adventures pipe Man W four c Y Radio. And I'm here with My name is Katie overbe nice and you just played punk rock bowling. I did. I did.
04 I'm very very lucky, you know. I gotta tell you you are very lucky because I do festivals all over the world. This is one of my favorite ones to do because it's so different than the rest of them. It's a really rad festival. I think it's definitely my favorite. I mean it doesn't it helps that I live about two blocks away, but yeah, that does. But it is rad because what other festival out there has a you know, festival stages and all these you know club shows and the bowling and just taking over all of Freemont's. Yes, but I love how accessible it is too, Like especially with the club shows, Like if you can't get a ticket to the main thing, like you're you're still able to go see music. Yeah, it doesn't it doesn't matter. That's great. I love that. Yeah, totally. So one question I ask artists when we're in weather like this, how the hell do you do it? I don't know. I mean, like, it's so hot, we have a hard time standing out. Yeah, much less it's I think it's less bad when you first go on stage, just because it is covered and it's air conditioned in the back before you go on. But I was I was wearing a full suit when I walked up, and I was not wearing a full suit by the time I got off. So yeah, that's the way it happens.
17 Well, a little brutal. I looked up at people sometimes I'm like, yeah, I get you want your luck, but man, that has to suck. Yeah, it's it sucks for a minute. Somebody I've interviewed a couple of times I'm friendly with, Uh, I've said the exact words to her because she wears this long leather trench. It's tailor mumpson, you know. Yeah yeah yeah. So I'm like, how the hell are you wearing that? And I did that off off the mike. I'm like, the hell is wrong with you? Hell? Are you wearing that and not passing out. Yeah, I saw her like a week ago when she opened for The Stones, and yeah, respect and like think about that too.
00 Okay, that I know is a lifelong dream of hers. And here's somebody that already made her way in the world and that was something. So for you, what would be that dream tour? Oh, honestly, I don't know. I mean, this is pretty close to it. I gotta be honest. This is incredible. This is like one of the best experiences I could ever dream of having. My favorite band of all time is probably the britpop band Pulp, which is definitely astray from this, but I think either opening for them or playing with them because I'm a violinist too, and they have a lot of violin guitar vote parts, and I think just playing with them or opening for them would be a dream. I love violin getting so much credit. Yeah, and whether it be rock metal punk because you had never thought that way back when, and it's like you take somebody like Lindsey Sterling and it's like, yeah, she's great, Oh my god, Like there's she's a deafen rocker one hundred percent. So running my violin through a distortion pedal is one of my favorite things to do. It's so fun.
04 Is there a cover song and that originally when you were playing the violin that was like a punk song that you did that you would want to tell us about. I started playing violin when I was eight years old, and I cannot say that I was that cool at eight years old. I wish that I could. When did you become that cool? When did I become that cool? Well? Probably fourteen, fourteen or fifteen, that makes sense, though, I'm gonna be so real. I think the first punk song I ever learned on violin was Time of your Life by Green Day, just because it already had a solo, and uh, I don't know, it felt easy then, so I learned it. And so what what brought you to punk? Combo of things? I started off as much more of a folk artist. I mean, I still do a lot of folk writing, and that's kind of you can kind of tell in my playing that I definitely a folk lyricist and I write a lot of folke melodies. But punk, I've just my parents are both really into it. I mean, my mom raised me on a lot of post punk. So like Susie and the band, she's the chameleons, you know all that. And then my dad is more in the adolescents tso wel agent Organs? Oh so he shirt? Yes, yes, yeah, so just both of them. I mean it just eventually trickled down. And then when I moved here, I started playing more like rock and punk and all that, and then uh, a lot of my friends were really into it, and it just kind of happened. It was just like, all right, you know what, let's play punk. Nice.
35 Yeah, and uh, you're dad. If he sees me tomorrow, he'll like that too, because he'll probably be wearing a Germ shirt tomorrow. Oh he Oh my gosh. He was a Yeah he was their agent for a second. Yeah, really, yes, we're we love the Germs. Well, it has to be the se a second because Darby was around first. It was post Darby. Yes, yeah, my dad's actually in the Germs movie really like two seconds. That's pretty cool. It is pretty cool. I have a very cool dad. I'm very lucky. I have a lot of those experiences too, Like I was in I lived on this. We're trading. We're talking stories about you, dad as we are, so I'm talking about the Germs. I was saying your dad. Oh, also like my shirt I'm wearing tomorrow, which is the Germs, And uh, we're gonna we're trading stories that you have cool stories, I have cool stories, you know, and uh now she's gonna have some really cool stories.
31 Yeah, what's your coolest story so far being a musician? This? This is my coolest story as a musician in general. I don't know, there's so many. I've gotten very very lucky for it's for an eighteen year old, for a recently eighteen year old. I've gotten to do a lot of living, and I've gotten to do a lot of cool living and I do my Oh yeah, okay, that's probably it. Alice Cooper gave me my first chocolate choke cookie. Now that's probably my coolestory. That's pretty cool. Yeah, that's about a really really cool story. Yeah, I had said, of every artist over three thousand interviews, that's probably the top one. Really. Oh yeah, because all the other ones are like these crazy stories and they're cool. But Alice Cooper first chocolate chip cookie. I mean, come on, I think you can't really top that. Yeah you can't.
20 Yeah, And uh so what's gonna go on after? How are you going to top punk rock bowling. Now, what's going on after this? The future is wide open. I am moving to Denver in August to go to college, so I don't really know what's happening from there. We'll see what happens. I'm very happy here, all right. Yeah, I think we are doing an EP, so we're definitely gonna get that out and then. But besides, in terms of actual performing, I don't I don't know. I'm gonna focus on school for a little bit. We'll see what happens. I'm very happy to hear that, because you know, it's it's interesting so many of the big punk bands went to college. You know. It's like you take Dexter from the Offspring, he paused the Offspring to go to college.
03 Yeah, and then you got Milo Milo. And I mean, like there's so many numerous ones like a name like I'm a metal head and a punk. The punks a lot of times are the better interviews because they're so highly educated and it's like such an interesting, like conversation of intellectual stuff. And what I love about it is people have this image of punks, and that kills that image because that's not really what punk is. What people think, you know, definitely, it's it's definitely, you know, I think people need to understand that. And it's more than just a music. It's an attitude, it's a way of life. It's it's a community, it's a family, and it's like you're a punk rock bowling. Yeah, there are no outcasts exactly. It's wonderful. I think that's my favorite thing about writing punk too, is that I mean, as somebody that comes from a folk background, as somebody that loves to tell stories through music, it definitely it maintains that. It's like you get to have that energy and you get to have you know, the electric behind it, but it's still you still get to you know, you get to be articulate and you have to have your stories. And that's my favorite thing, totally totally. So how do people reach out to you on socials on the web, you know, get your merch all that good stuff. Merch does not exist yet. We gotta get that. Hey, hey, if it's wanted. My Instagram is Katie overb Music k A T I E O V E R B E y Yes
41 music. That's my TikTok too. Uh, that's all I got right now. Once the EP comes out, my Spotify will be Katie overb and the backlash And and how do you feel about TikTok for artists nowadays? I think that at this point in society, it's kind of necessary. But I don't like that it's become necessary. See that that's a pretty like it's almost like a combination of your generation's explanation and mine gen X's explanation, because it's like I'm on TikTok. Do I want to be on TikTok? No? No, But I realize I have to be on TikTok, And you know, it's like so many bands have gotten so many great opportunities on TikTok. Yeah, which is great for those that do. But I mean as somebody who's I'm not very social media savvy for an eighteen year old, and yeah, it's kind of strange, and like I feel like there's a lot of pressure to be good at social media and for me, it's like I don't naturally go to that, and so that's definitely an added level of stress, like having to keep that up and do the whole music thing. I'm glad you brought that up because it is true, like I've managed a couple of artists where you know, I'll bring the artists to so many records because I have a connection ere and they're like not a social Yeah, what's their socials?
05 They don't give a shit about the music they want. What's the socials? I don't. Yeah, I do not that I don't back it at all. I also one of the things I don't like. I love that gives great opportunities to artists on TikTok, but I also don't like, on the other hand, that all they have to do is make tiktoks and get famous. Yep. You know because as you, as a musician probably agree with me, is like the art of being a musician is getting lost in ticket. Yes, one hundred percent. There's a lot of work that goes into it, and I think that through TikTok. I mean, there's a lot of people that do work that get big through TikTok and that's wonderful and it's great and I'm thrilled for them. But at the same time, yes, there is a lot of I think the artistry behind it that's not quite captured.
52 Yeah, and you know what, I think You'll be okay because Vine was the TikTok a few years back, and that's not their anymore. And I wasted my time. Okay. I think I was about seven when that came out, so I wasn't allowed to be honest. Yeah. So see like maybe a few years from now, TikTok will be gone and you'll still be a musician. Yeah yeah, true. Hopefully yeah, well definitely on the music. Uh there it is, hopefully on the TikTok. Is there anything else you want to share with the listeners that we haven't talked about that you got going on or you want them to know, think so, just be on the lookout for the album. I had a wonderful weekend. I'm super grateful. Thank you to punk Rock Bowlling for having me. Thank you for having me for this interview. This is awesome, Oh my pleasure.
37 Thank you for being here at punk Rock Boy, and thanks for being on the Adventures of pipe Man. Great. Thank you so much. Thank you for listening to the Adventures of pipe Man on w for CUI Radio.
