On this episode of the Adventures of Pipeman, Pipeman speaks to Josie Cotton, an American singer, songwriter, and actress who began her career in the late 1970s. Josie talks about her latest album, "Day of the Gun", which will be released on May 2nd. She also mentions an album release party on May 4th at Los Angeles' Daddy Diamonds, where people can come and have fun while enjoying popcorn, an ice cream truck, and possibly balloons. She invites everyone to the party, saying that it will be a super-mindless celebration of life. Pipeman and Josie also discuss starting over and the difficulties that come with it. Josie suggests that it would be better to fix what we have rather than completely clearing the decks. Pipeman agrees and points out that starting over would require a lot of work, and people have already done the legwork to get to this point. Josie tells listeners how they can connect with her on social media and where they can find her album. She is reachable on Instagram and Facebook as Josie Cotton Official and Josie Cotton, respectively. The album will be available on all platforms. She also talks about her record company, Kitten Robot, and their roster of artists, including the Velvet Starlings, Tombstones in Their Eyes, Hayley & the Crushers, and Mark Lanegan. You can check the music out over on the record labels website at kittenrobot.com or on all the major streaming platforms. 0:00 Hey, you love them too, that's sure. I'm for see why for you Wake up America. It's time for the Adventures of Pipeman on W four C Why dot com. West Palm Beach is number one Internet radio station. Here's your host, the White Man. She's taking photos with the food.
52 Next stranger kind to us, the pipe Man. Here on the Adventures Pipe Man W FOURCY Radio and our next guests. This is her three people. She's one of my favorite guests, and she has some killer new music and what an incredible artist. So welcome to his show. Josie Cotton, how are you. I'm so good. Thank you, Pipeman. I'm glad to hear that you're so good and so is Your new music is so good. Thank you. You know. I always kind of wonder with artists like you that have been doing this forever. You know, I'm always in awe that you can come out with new material. It's like, after writing songs and doing this your whole life, it's like you would think at some point you had some nothing else to say, but obvious leader's always something to say, I guess, so it just seems to keep wanting to be said. And I did. I did take a break for a few years, and I think that helped just to kind of recharge the batteries and I didn't have anything to say at all for a few years. And so but it just the world is so fascinating right now, and I just can't seem to stop the flow of creativity that's coming right now. And I'm I can't argue with it.
23 It's it's so lucky right now. Well, we're lucky to have you and this new album that's coming out very soon. May second, Yes, so tell us about the new album. Yeah, it's it's really different than any album I've done, and of course that's usually how it is with my records. They're all very different from one another, and I like it like that keeps it fresh, you know, and it's kind of an in your face, you know, observance of our universe. I don't know, Yeah, I don't know. It's it's it's it's it's really has a huge variety of music styles, I guess, but I mean, I'm a you know, I'm a pop singer, a rock singer, so it's it always has that element. But never I think none of the songs are about me.
17 I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm much more of like storytelling, and on this record of the things i'm I'm observing in characters, I have imagined how they would be. So tell us one of those stories that like hits most for you, hits your heart most. Oh, that hits my heart most. I don't have a heart. God, I lost that, you know, in the music business. But no, they tried, but I still have one. I don't believe you that. I believe you do have one. I don't believe that you don't. Ah, well, I appreciate that, but I was saying the one, the single that's out right now, it's it's Dear to my Heart. It's painting in Blood. I don't know if you've heard that one yet, but you know that's that's fun. That's a fun song for me because it's it's humorous and it's also from the heart. It's it's it's about Morricone and and the Italian horror movies he did soundtracks for and which I've always been a B movie you know, freak as you know, and I did that whole record of the movies theme songs. Bad. I discovered this new type of horror movie from the nineteen seventies. I'd never run across before, and they're called Giallo and I was looking at them and there was like, they're so beautifully filmed and all this great stuff, and and then I and then I look at who was doing the music, because that
49 was fantastic, and it was Nio Morricone, who, of course it did all the spaghetti western theme songs and good and bad and ugly and the dollars. And he's a genius, right, a musical. But he was doing these really crazy Italian horror movies and they're campy, you know, they're you can laugh through these things. They're they're not you know, they're very just minimal kind of horror factor. They're just it's it's more like a campy jaunt, you know, through Italy. You know, I don't know, but but you know, he wrote this most amazing music. And I just asked myself the question, why would he, you know, considered a genius, why would he do these like little horror movie things. And that was the question I thought was so funny to ask him in the song and you know why he was doing that? And and he actually died in the middle of recording it, so I was. I was never able to get that to him. I really was really wanted him to hear this. I was inspired by his music. There's you know, some of his you know, more upbeat music was what was really conducive to this song. And then I kind of have a little Giallo movie. It's like a little Italian horror movie in the verses and it's just it's just fun, you know, and been also heartfelt because I loved him, I worshiped him. So that's one, and I'm doing a little video for it right now. Actually nice, Yeah,
20 and I see I'm glad because I can't wait till that video comes out because I did see the like regular video, so I can well. No, I saw the one for Paint and Blood, but it wasn't like it wasn't like a full on video. So now I can't wait for Yeah, this is a full on video. Did you you didn't see disco Ball? I did a video for that too. That was the first single of this record. Oh that one I miss. I'm gonna have to see that one. So it's crazy, it is. It's whack a doodle. I wouldn't expect that less from you. I wouldn't expect day less from you. That's what's great about And I did love the video for the Ballad of Elvis Presley.
02 Yeah, that's a beautiful thing. I really love that. But but the one for Disco Ball is pretty sick. So I think you'd like it. Dean. Oh, I'm as soon as i get off of here. That's the first thing I'm gonna do. And I think our listeners better do that too. Good. Okay, now you sold me, you said sick, and now I'm sold. Yeah, okay, yeah, I knew that would be I knew that would do the check with you. I don't know why, right, And now I am kind of bummed out because I'm going to do a radio coverage at a festival called Shaky Knees in Atlanta. But I'm bummed out. I'm bummed out because I'm flying to Atlanta on May fourth instead of instead of being at Los Angeles Daddy Diamonds for your album release party, because yeah, I wish I would have been there instead. So great, it's too you could have become in a full clown outfit. Oh really, Yeah, the whole club is all clowns stuff. I don't know. I used to be so afraid of clowns, but apparently I'm over it because it's gonna be I just thought it would distract people if they hate the record and they can just be like blah blah blah with the clown you know, like to distract them, or you have just the clowns like just have to, you know, threaten people make sure they like the records, right, right, because clowns are scary and sometimes evil. I don't know. So either
33 you like the record or you'll never leave. Oh you's okay. I think I'm gonna make a sign with that exact phrase. Yeah they love the record, or this is your last night on earth and you have like the scariest clowns are there holding these signs? Right? Oh wow? Yeah, that wouldn't be hard. This is a town of clowns. And you know magic, I guess magic, you know, I don't know it's a good magic or bad magic. I don't know, because I only do good magic. Well, that's you sure, that's funny. With with comedy though, you can do you can get as bad as you want, because if you're making people laugh, then it's it's okay. Well that's true, except I don't know. I think comics kind of have a hard time nowadays because you're not allowed to offend anybody. See that. To me, that is like such a that's really going backwards in my mind, because you can't you can't get so politically correct that humor has to suffer. Oh my god, like just equal opportunity. Just make fun of everybody, Just make fun of everybody.
52 But I guess everybody is so thin skinned now. I just don't understand. I don't understand that. That's that's that's a mystery to me of how they could be attacking. I mean, they go after them and all of that. I just I mean, I just leave the comics alone, leave the clowns alone. While you're at it, tears of a clown, here's a clown. I mean, I'm surprised there's not a group trying to defend you know, you know, disappropriation or of clown outfits. I don't know. Careful they might ban clowns. Clowns are getting canceled. I think the clowns must be canceled. Probably everything needs to be canceled on Earth, including the Earth, and then then they'll be happy. I think they'll be happy at that point, right, well, my best bro okay, he said recently.
48 He's the one that I you know, we went to all the shows and when we were teenagers on the Sunset Strip all the time. He's like, you know what, we should just break the whole thing and start over. And yeah, he might have a point at this point. It's like like sometimes you just got It's like video games. Like I'm a gamer. Anytime I really don't like where I'm going in the game, I just hit the reset button then start from scratch. It's easier than trying to correct the mistakes. Yeah, except sometimes you can. You can like spend so much money repairing your car and then and then you start from scratching. You don't have any you don't have a ride, you know what I mean. Well, yeah, that's true. But you know what too. I was for like the past four or five months, I was in Europe, Costa Rica and Bali. Oh wow, And I did not drive for like four months for the first time in my life since I'm like fifteen, And it was quite liberating. Actually nice, you know nice. You know, I guess I was making I was trying to make a metaphor there. I know that fell on its face. But you know, I just like you start over.
05 But then if you start really from you know, over, then what are you going to replace it with? Like you got to have something like right there to go in and replace it. Like at least with your games, you had a whole computer system and in a whole bunch of things to do. If you like wiped out all computers because you're upset was your game? Like like, now what you're gonna like hug a tree? And you know, and well, you know what, there's another negative of starting over. It's like what if you do it worse? That's it. And I'm like, I'm I'm kind of of the world of let's fix what we have rather than like just completely clearing the decks, because I kind of I kind of like, I think there's some some valid things in this world, and I don't want to start the world over. I think I think your brother and I would could have an interesting discussion about that. Yeah, there you go, And you do have a good point because like some people already did all the legwork to get to this point. To start over, that would be a lot of work. That's a lot of work. It's like, I'm not happy with language. Let's just start over, like, Okay, I don't know. I don't know how we got off on this track, don't. I don't know. But everybody needs to check out Day of the Gun out May second. Yeah, and they need to go to the album
41 release party on May fourth at Los Angeles Daddy Diamonds fifteen fifty three North Khanga. Yeah. Yeah, Kwena is a really fun part of Hollywood. But people should come and it should come to this, to this event. There's gonna be clown foods, which I guess is you know, popcorn and ice cream truck. I don't know it's gonna be fun about how about funnel cake? Probably not because I don't know how to make that. Someone wants to bring in, I wouldn't. I wouldn't kick them out. Will there be balloons? I'm sure there'll be balloons. Yes. Yeah. You have to have really pretty girls and like trapeze outfits and oh are you trying to sell me on? Like just ditching the festival and just coming to your party.
31 If I could, I would add other things, but I don't think I'm gonna be able to come on. It's la You can add anything you want. There's a dancing elephant and you know, a whole herd of Zebras. I don't know that you're going to be coming to the party. Nice, you'd love it. You got all the A listers coming in a party, the Zebras, the elephants, and the clowns. To me, those are those are the A listers of LA right there. That's right. So let's tell everybody too about how they can connect with the on social media obviously, but how they can get the album, how they can connect with Kitten Robot Records, who puts out the album, and yeah and all that good stuff.
16 Sure, yeah, well it's Kitten Robot dot com is you know, our record company. And but it's going to be on all the platforms. It'll be everywhere that the music is allowed. Still, they'll they'll have it on the air. And I'm Josie Cotton Official on Instagram and Josie Cotton on Facebook. I don't I don't go on Facebook so much anymore. And they're trying to push me onto Twitter and I guess I'm doing that like very you know, just beginning on that. But I'm very reachable and and and so is kitt and Robot and we have a wonderful roster of people will be playing my record twice, my new record, but they'll We're going to be playing other artists on our label, the Velvet Starlings and Tombstones in Their Eyes and Halien the Crushers and Mark Lanigan who he's on our label too, and even though he's not among us anymore, he did a wonderful album for us.
14 And so yeah, it's it's gonna be wild and wooly with clowns an elephants, well yeah, metaphorical elephants, yes, dancing elephants probably, yeah, And you know, it'll just be It'll just be a super you know, mindless celebration of life. I love it and I wouldn't expect any less from you, thank you. I think it's just gonna be like escape everything and just have fun. That's yeah, Yeah, that's that's kind of how I'm trying to to work this this night, you know, And I'm not performing.
56 I'm just gonna be making announcements and probably be carried around by my clown friends. That's what I was gonna say. You're probably gonna be, you know, playing with clowns. Yeah, well, they're gonna be all around and you know, and so yeah, that should entice some you know, odd people. I think it will entice everybody, to be honest. Okay, all right, well well I'm off. I'm ready entices, but maybe I am odd. I don't know. No, I know that you are, but I do wish you were coming. I do wish that that would happen. But I know I'm pummed. Now, Like, what festival is it you're doing. It's called Shaking Knees. And what kind of music is that? You got the Lumineers playing, you got the Muse playing, you got three eleven playing, you got Cypress Hill. Oh okay, that's a that's a real real thing. Yeah. It's got some jam band, some punk bands, some you know, pop stuff, a little bit mix.
07 For sure. That sounds fun. We'll have a great time. Oh I always do. That's the start of my tour because I go, as you know, I go do all the festival. So that's my first one, and then I'm doing Welcome to Rockville, and then I might be doing one called Milwaukee Metal Festival. We're also promoting Sonic Temple, and then I'm off to Europe and UK for Download Festival, hell Fest and the Danube Festival, the one that's like free and it gets like five million people or some something like that. It's insane. For yeah, yeah, it's yeah, and it's in Austria, in Vienna, Austria. Yeah, my goodness. Well, stay alive, don't get ampled over there. Let's not let's hope not.
02 Well, I'll be back in the press area, so I'll avoid all that craziness, right, I'll probably go wild into it anyway, just for fun. We've been here. That sounds really great. So but I definitely want to be a man. I'm really bummed now. I wish I knew before now I want to be at your record release. But I do love your record and everybody needs to listen to it. Everybody needs to go to the party with the clowns, and everybody needs to support all your artists and Robot too. Yeah we have we have a great roster. And you know, Kia Rossler is on it too, who is the the you know, the first bass player with black Flat and she has a record out on Robot and and she's rad, rad girl woman icon. I wish I should say that's right. Yeah, So yeah, we're just we have about fifteen different acts on the label nice really fun. It's been. It's fun, you know, getting involved in other people's careers and not just my own. Yeah, well, you're just multi talented, that's all. Oh well, I try, I try to keep pumping it out. Well, you keep pumping it out because you're doing a great job and I love it. And thank you for being on the Adventures of Pipe Man. Thank you so much.
